Episode 58: In Other Words, This Is the True Essence of the Summoning Skill
After finishing the pudding and feeling satisfied, we resumed our work at the Summoning Guild. It seemed the sugar had reached everyone’s brains. As they were all working efficiently with cheerful expressions.
Sweet treats are truly amazing. Since Tetsujin can bring my ideas to life, I’ll have to keep asking it to make delicious things from now on.
—
Evening came, and the day’s work was done.
After dismissing Selvus and Lala, I went to thank the head chef.
Of course, only Balt, Ray, and I went. If I brought the fluffballs along again, the head chef’s opinion of me would plummet.
If that happened, he might stop sharing ingredients with us. Which would be a disaster. I absolutely had to avoid that.
We arrived at the kitchen. It was bustling with preparations for dinner. I felt a little bad interrupting. But I still wanted to express my gratitude.
“Head Chef, thanks for the ingredients earlier.”
“Oh, Prince Rufus! It was my pleasure. But if I may ask, what exactly were those ingredients used for?”
As expected of the head chef—his curiosity about food had been piqued. Well, that makes sense. The combination of ingredients wasn’t typical for making cookies or cakes.
To leave a good impression, I decided to tell him.
“I used them to make a dessert called pudding.”
“Pudding? What kind of dessert is that?”
“Well, it’s a steamed dessert with a yellow color. And at the bottom of the container, there’s a layer of brown caramel.”
The head chef crossed his arms and tilted his head in confusion. It seemed he couldn’t quite picture it. Even with Ray helping to explain, his reaction remained lukewarm.
If only I were better at presenting ideas… What a shame.
“I see…….. It sounds like an intriguing dessert.”
Even so, the head chef seemed interested. He was likely curious about what a steamed dessert was like. It was probably a type of dessert he had never encountered before.
Hmm, what to do… If I showed him how it’s made, I’m sure he’d understand right away.
“If it won’t be too much trouble, I could show you how to make it. Not me personally, but Tetsujin could.”
“Tetsujin?”
“Yeah, it’s the magical creature I summon with my Summoning Skill.”
The head chef looked puzzled. But he quickly glanced around the room. It seemed he didn’t know what a Summoning Skill was. He also thought Lagios and Cayenne were just ordinary animals earlier.
Judging from his reaction, he probably didn’t even know that I inherited the Summoning Skill.
Hey, I’m the Third Prince of this kingdom, you know? A little more curiosity would be nice. Sure, my skill might not be as flashy as Brother Leonard’s Sword Saint Skill, but still…………………
“You can use that space over there. It should be fine.”
The head chef pointed to a corner of the kitchen. It seemed his curiosity about this unknown dessert won out.
That’s the spirit! Otherwise, he wouldn’t have made it as the Royal Head Chef.
The spot he pointed to was a workbench with some slightly outdated tools. Still, it looked like it had all the necessary cooking utensils. So it should be manageable.
There wasn’t an oven, but I could make do with a pot.
“Alright then, I’ll borrow this spot. In the name of Rufus Eladoria, I command you—manifest, Tetsujin Chef!”
“Ma!”
“Wha—?!”
The head chef fell back in shock at the sudden appearance of the tin robot. I quickly apologized and introduced Tetsujin.
I wasn’t sure if he fully understood, but at least he realized Tetsujin wasn’t hostile.
“So this is the Summoning Skill… I’ve never seen it before. To think you could summon a golem that can cook—how astonishing.”
“Heh, this is the true essence of the Summoning Skill.”
I looked at the head chef with a smug expression. But there was no time for that. If we didn’t start soon, it would be dinner time.
“Tetsujin, make one pudding, please.”
“Ma!”
“And take your time making it, okay?”
“Ma?”
And so, Tetsujin began to make the pudding carefully. It was as if it was teaching a disciple how to cook. The head chef watched with intense focus. It seemed that by summoning Tetsujin, I had drawn quite a bit of attention. From a distance, other cooks were watching us while scribbling notes on paper.
Tetsujin continued cooking. After completing the preparations, Tetsujin poured the pudding mixture into ceramic cups. It was observing the head chef’s reaction. It then placed the cups into a lidded pot filled with hot water to steam them.
“The method seems simpler than I expected. But this is quite an unusual cooking technique.”
The head chef was deeply impressed, as if the idea had never occurred to him. They did have steamed dishes. But they were usually limited to chicken or potato dishes.
Perhaps this pudding could inspire a broader variety of steamed dishes.
I’d be thrilled if it led to the creation of steamed buns filled with meat or sweet red bean paste. Or even other types of traditional Japanese sweets. But before that, I’d have to teach the head chef how to make anko (sweet red bean paste).
Tetsujin answered the head chef and the other cooks’ questions by writing its replies on paper. I regretted not giving it the ability to speak. It was too late now. But I swore to myself that Tetsujin Chef Mark II would definitely have a talking feature.
