Episode 59: In Other Words, That Means I’m Forgiven
While all of this was happening, the pudding was finished. I asked Ray to chill it. I then offered it to the head chef for a taste test.
There shouldn’t be any issues with the flavor. The only question was whether the head chef would like it.
“Well then, excuse me as I try this……….. W-What is this!?”
“How is it?”
“It’s absolutely delicious. The smooth texture, the melt-in-your-mouth sweetness, and the fragrant caramelized sugar… everything is just perfect.”
It seemed he liked it. The other cooks around us were eyeing the pudding hungrily. But the head chef didn’t share any with them. Not very generous of him.
Savoring every bite, the head chef finished the pudding with a satisfied smile.
“I never imagined that His Highness, the Third Prince, would know how to make such a dessert.”
“Well, I didn’t make it—Tetsujin did.”
“Summoning Skills truly hold incredible power.”
The head chef spoke in awe.
Alright, I managed to advertise the Summoning Skill nicely. The other cooks present also seemed to understand just how amazing Tetsujin and the Summoning Skill were.
“Your Highness, was it really okay to share the recipe for such a magnificent dessert with everyone?”
“I don’t mind. Delicious things taste even better when shared. Once you’re done with work, feel free to try it yourselves. I think you’ll really like it.”
“Oh! How generous of you, Your Highness. I’m truly moved by your kindness!”
The head chef started sobbing. Whoa, what’s with this situation? This is unsettling. Seeing a grown man cry so openly feels… awkward. It looks like I’m the one who made him cry, too.
This is getting increasingly uncomfortable.
“Head Chef, here, use this to wipe your tears. Besides, everyone’s… well, they’re not exactly staring. But don’t you have to get back to preparing dinner?”
After handing him a handkerchief, I looked around at the other cooks. Many of them were either crying or looked like they were about to.
Did I really say something that cool? Oh, Ray’s quietly shedding tears too… I guess I did say something moving.
I needed to leave. My danger sensors were going off like crazy.
“Anyway, I’ll be waiting over there. I’m looking forward to dinner. Feel free to use the pudding recipe however you like. You can even make it for your families.”
Leaving those words behind, I quickly left the kitchen. Rufus Eladoria is making a swift exit!
Naturally, on the way out, I dismissed Tetsujin. It stands out too much. People still see it as some sort of monster golem. Did I mess up its design?
“Oh? Why are you in such a hurry?”
“Brother Gilliam.”
I arrived at the dining room a bit earlier, where my brother Gilliam was already waiting. He wasn’t practicing his sword swings. Which meant he hadn’t gotten into more trouble. Impressive.
He looked so calm, it was hard to believe he was the same person who caused that scene at lunch. Maybe that was just a bad dream. I should’ve pinched my cheek to check.
“How’s the research going?”
“We’re examining the ancient dishes. They have designs you don’t see nowadays—it really feels like you can sense history in them.”
“What kind of designs?”
“Uh, like… mugs, maybe?”
The first thing that popped into my head was the mugs we used when making the pudding. I should’ve taken the time to check out each one when I pulled them out of Tora-chan.
“Mugs! I’d love to see them.”
“Balt and Ray should have them.”
I gave the mugs away as pudding containers. And since they haven’t left my side since then, they probably still have them.
Brother Gilliam looked at me in shock. Before he turned his gaze to Balt and Ray with great urgency.
Wait, was it bad to give away the mugs?
“Balt, Ray, could I see them?”
“Yes, here they are.”
Balt and Ray placed the mugs on the table. Balt’s mug had a blue line on it, while Ray’s was decorated with a cat pattern.
Maybe I should have chosen a mug with a line pattern for Ray too? But if I remember correctly, Ray picked that design himself. In that case, he must like the pattern.
“This is definitely a mug. And it’s in perfect condition without a single chip. This is an extremely valuable item.”
“Really? By the way, how much would it be worth?”
“Let’s see………. If it were up to me, I’d pay at least a hundred gold coins for it.”
“A hundred!?”
Balt screamed. He clearly hadn’t realized it was worth that much. Funny enough, neither did I.
That means the mugs I gave to Selvus and Lala are worth about the same.
I’d better keep quiet about this. If Lala found out, she’d probably freak out. I gave them as gifts with good intentions, but they might even try to return them.
I still have plenty left in the Small Ice Room… What should I do?
“By the way, Rufus. Did you by any chance give these mugs to the two of them as presents?”
Ugh, Brother Gilliam’s smile is terrifying! His eyes… his eyes aren’t smiling at all! But I can’t exactly lie and say I didn’t.
Think. Think of a way out of this.
“Yes. I gave them as gifts to thank them for everything they do. Would you like one too, Brother Gilliam?”
“Really!?”
“Of course! In fact, you can take two or three if you want. I still have plenty left.”
“As expected of Rufus! You’re my pride and joy of a little brother!”
I’m forgiven! But this was seriously nerve-wracking.
