Episode 60: In Other Words, It Means I Don’t Understand Value
“Strike while the iron is hot.” I quickly summoned Tora-chan. I intended to finish everything before His Majesty, Mother, and Brother Leonard arrived. I pulled out some random mugs. I couldn’t be bothered anymore. So I decided to give them all away.
“Here you go, Brother Gilliam.”
“Are you sure about this? So many! These are all well-made. Look at this—each one has the exact same shape.”
“Yes, that’s right.”
Since they’re mass-produced, it’s only natural they all look the same. However, in this era, items that are identical are considered extremely rare and valuable.
This is because only skilled craftsmen can achieve such uniformity. If made by an amateur, the shapes would be distorted and inconsistent.
“So, Rufus, you’ve come to understand the rarity value of these mugs, huh?”
Brother Gilliam said sentimentally.
No, not at all! If anything, I think they’re “worthless”.
Brother Gilliam seemed to be under a huge misconception. But I chose not to correct him. However, I did need to say one thing:
“Brother Gilliam, you should hide them quickly. If His Majesty sees them, who knows what he might say.”
“You’re right. As expected of you, Rufus. You there, take these to my room. Be very careful.”
“Y-Yes, sir!”
The servant trembled. Honestly, there were plenty more. So I wouldn’t mind if he broke them all. I felt a little bad for not saying that. But self-preservation comes first. I have no intention of jumping into unnecessary trouble.
After the servant left with the mugs, His Majesty and the others arrived. Fortunately, they didn’t seem to find it odd that Brother Gilliam and I were already there.
Phew. Managed to get through that safely. If they found out I gave those mugs to Brother Gilliam, I’d definitely get a lecture.
Brother Gilliam must’ve realized this too. He didn’t bring it up once during dinner. As expected of him.
If it were Brother Leonard, he’d definitely blurt it out with a proud look on his face.
“Hm? Is there something on my face?”
“No, not at all. Today’s dinner was delicious, wasn’t it?”
“Yes, you’re right, Rufus. That black rabbit steak was perfectly fatty and delicious. The fat was sweet too.”
As Brother Leonard was savoring the memory, dessert was brought out to conclude the dinner.
Oh, I recognize this yellow dessert.
“Oh my, I’ve never seen this dessert before. Is it from the neighboring continent, Chef?”
“No, Your Majesty,”
The head chef answered with a smile, glancing at me.
Stop it, Head Chef. Don’t do it! I forgot to tell him to keep it a secret!
“This is a dessert called ‘pudding’ that I learned from the Third Prince.”
“What!?”
His Majesty shot me a glare that clearly said, “You again?”
Oh no, I don’t have the Fluff Squad’s protection right now. His Majesty must have realized this too. I should’ve summoned them beforehand.
This might turn into a big commotion. But maybe I could use this opportunity to naturally introduce Tetsujin.
“No, no, Your Majesty, it wasn’t me who taught him. It was the magical creature I summoned. Come out, Tetsujin!”
“Ma!”
Tetsujin appeared. Its joints were slightly opened, emitting a red light. Its eyes were also glowing red, fixed on His Majesty. Wait, is this… Destroy Mode?

“Hold on, Rufus. Calm down first, okay?”
“Mother!”
His Majesty put his hands up in a placating gesture. While Brother Leonard swiftly caught the Queen as she fainted at the sight of Tetsujin. As expected of the Sword Saint—quick reflexes. The dining room descended into chaos in an instant.
Amidst all the commotion, only Brother Gilliam remained focused. He was staring intently at the pudding.
As expected of someone with the Scholar Skill. He must be curious about the food in front of him. The fact that he showed no interest in Tetsujin, whom I summoned, might be because he’s already used to me summoning strange magical creatures. Or maybe he’s just lost interest because he’s thoroughly researched golems already?
Completely unfazed, Brother Gilliam put a spoonful of pudding in his mouth at his own pace. His face instantly lit up with delight, and he looked over at me.
“This is delicious. So, this is pudding. I never thought I’d actually get to taste something that ancient people once ate.”
“You knew about pudding?”
“Of course. Only by name and description, though. It’s a yellow, wobbly food. If I remember correctly, there’s something brown at the bottom of the container… There it is! This is definitely pudding!”
I see. The reason Brother Gilliam was fixated on the pudding was because he already knew what it was. If someone were presented with the food their favorite historical figure once ate, they’d probably react the same way.
“Mother, are you okay?”
“Oh, Leonard, I feel like I just saw a terrifyingly shaped golem…”
“Ah, Mother, that’s the golem I summoned. Technically, it’s not a golem, though.”
I discreetly deactivated Tetsujin’s Destroy Mode from a spot where Mother couldn’t see. Of course, I didn’t dismiss it. Right now, Tetsujin is the only guardian I have.
