Episode 61: In Other Words, Everyone Wants to Eat Sweet Treats
After explaining the situation to Mother, I introduced Tetsujin. Now that Tetsujin was back to its normal state, it didn’t look menacing at all. If anything, it resembled a friendly uncle. As expected of Tetsujin the Chef.
“Somehow, it feels different from the golem I saw earlier. But if you say so, Rufus, then it must be.”
Ugh, she’s observant. I thought Mother fainted right away. But she had clearly been watching closely. She tapped Tetsujin a few times, testing the texture.
Inside Tetsujin must be hollow because it echoed nicely. Could it be… a papier-mâché shell?
“I summoned it because I wanted to eat a dessert called pudding. I thought it would be a waste for us alone to eat it, so I taught the recipe to the head chef.”
“Mother, pudding is a wonderful treat! Please try it while it’s still warm.”
Brother Gilliam seemed a bit confused.
Well, pudding is meant to be eaten cold… In fact, warm pudding would feel off. Do warm puddings even exist?
As I was pondering this, Mother took a bite of the pudding.
Perhaps influenced by her, His Majesty and Brother Leonard also took a bite.
Their eyes widened in shock. Though light didn’t actually shine from their eyes or mouths, their expressions said it all.
“What is this? It’s so good!”
That reaction was quite unlike the Second Prince. But that’s Brother Leonard’s charm and the reason he can’t be king. If he became king, any royal dignity would instantly disappear.
……….Maybe he acts this way on purpose because he doesn’t want the throne.
“Hm, indeed, this is delicious. The soft, melting texture is remarkable.”
“Yes, it’s delightful. It has a texture and flavor that makes you feel happy.”
Everyone was basking in the warm, comforting feeling. Looks like I’m off the hook! Mother did faint, but that was because of His Majesty’s suspicious look. If he hadn’t been so skeptical, I wouldn’t have needed to summon Tetsujin.
“Rufus, can this Tetsujin make other ancient desserts?”
“What kind of desserts do you mean?”
It would be easy to list foods I knew from my time on Earth. But depending on the name, even Brother Gilliam might not recognize it.
If I mention something unfamiliar, Brother Gilliam might insist on trying it. It would lead His Majesty to question how I knew about it. No doubt about it.
“Let’s see… If we’re talking about sweets, maybe cream puffs or mitarashi dango?”
“Mitarashi dango? Even something like that existed?”
“Oh? Rufus, you seem to know about it.”
Ah, crap. I reacted instinctively to the mention of a Japanese sweet. I never expected him to bring up dango. If dango is on the menu, then anko (red bean paste) might be, too.
“Well, it just sounded familiar… Anyway, I think Tetsujin can make both. Right?”
“Ma.”
“He says he can.”
Brother Gilliam and the others looked skeptical. It was as if they were wondering, “Really?” They seemed puzzled by how I was communicating with Tetsujin.
But we understand each other perfectly. Even with a one-syllable response, our thoughts are in sync.
Plus, since Tetsujin is a magical creature I summoned, I’m confident it can recreate any dish from my memories. Even with my vague recollections, it managed to make pudding perfectly.
“Well, I’d love to try them. What about you, Your Majesty, Mother, Leonard?”
“I am curious to taste them.”
“Yes, I’d like to try them. If Gilliam is recommending them, they must’ve been popular sweets in that era, right?”
“Sweet treats are great for recharging when you’re tired. And if they’re new, even better!”
All three agreed with Brother Gilliam. Looks like it’s safe to make them.
If I teach the head chef how to make cream puffs and mitarashi dango, the recipes will spread to many people.
If they spread the word that these desserts were recreated by a magical creature I summoned, it would be great publicity for my Summoning Skill. I’d get all the credit without lifting a finger. No more running around to promote my summoning abilities!
“Understood. Then, I’ll try to recreate them with the Head Chef tomorrow.”
“Is that alright, Your Highness, the Third Prince?”
“Of course! I have absolute trust in your skills as the head chef. Once you’ve mastered it, be sure to teach everyone else how to make it too. What’s mine is everyone’s.”
I flashed a bright smile. A little flattery goes a long way. Some might call this completely delegating responsibility, but I’m the Third Prince of this kingdom. A bit of selfishness can be justified by sheer authority. Wahaha!
“Your Highness………… Thank you. I will do my utmost to meet your expectations!”
I heard a choked sob. Oh no, I made the head chef cry again. And all I did was use a little trick that nobles often use.
I looked at my family, as if to say, “You all do this too, right?” But for some reason, they all had teary eyes. They were moved by emotion.
I feel like their reactions are different from what I expected. I didn’t think I said anything that impressive……. Are they misunderstanding something?
Even though I thought that, I was too scared to ask. So I left it at that. Ignorance is bliss—or rather, not asking is bliss.
