Episode 63: In Other Words, Everyone’s SpecialÂ
The next morning at breakfast. I immediately brought up the topic we discussed last night. From now on, only Tia would accompany Mother to the bath.Â
“What? You took a bath with Milia yesterday?”Â
“Oh, I don’t see the problem. I wouldn’t mind if Rufus joined us too.”Â
His Majesty the King, who adores Mother, glared at me immaturely. I’m his son, and still just a kid! Getting jealous over that? What a petty man.Â
Look, even Brother Gilliam and Brother Leonard were raising their eyebrows and smiling wryly.Â
“Mother, that may be fine for now. But I’m human too, you know? I can’t stay a child forever.”Â
“You’ll always be my child, no matter how old you get.”Â
That’s a reasonable viewpoint. But it’s coming from a parent’s feelings. In society, however, that reasoning wouldn’t fly. Just because I’m her child doesn’t mean I can go into the women’s bath as an adult male.Â
“That may be true, but please consider how others might see it.”Â
“Everyone seemed happy about it.”Â
“If that’s what you want, please ask Tia. I won’t be joining you in the bath anymore.”Â
Even if she pouted adorably, I wasn’t backing down. Even my willpower had its limits. It’s been holding up under constant attacks, but just barely.Â
I glanced at His Majesty for some backup, but he shot me a blatantly hostile look.Â
Ah, no help from him.Â
“Alright, I give up. But how about occasionally taking a bath together? Gilliam and Leonard always run away, you know?”Â
She hasn’t given up at all! When she said “I give up,” she meant, “I give up on bathing together every day.” No, that’s not the point!Â
This was also the first time I learned that Mother had also invited Brother Gilliam and Brother Leonard to bathe together. We’ve never had a conversation about this before, have we?Â
Apparently, my brothers were just as surprised. They exchanged silent glances, eyes wide as if saying, “You too?”Â
Then, there was an exaggerated clearing of the throat. It was His Majesty.Â
“Milia, the children are quite grown up now. It’s time to let them go.”Â
“Oh, come on. They’re so precious to me, I wouldn’t mind putting them in my eyes.”Â
Mother really loves us, huh? But she loves us so much that she’s kind of overboard.Â
If I were a girl, maybe I could’ve been more accommodating of her requests.Â
But if I were a girl, then His Majesty definitely wouldn’t have been able to let go. I might not have even been able to get married. In that case, maybe it’s better that I’m a boy.Â
His Majesty’s words must have cooled her head. After that, she didn’t push the issue anymore.Â
Somehow, I managed to avoid taking a bath with Mother again. Feeling accomplished, I headed to the Summoning Guild.Â
I had to tell Selvus and Lala about the idea from yesterday.Â
“Good morning, Selvus, Lala.”Â
“Good morning, Prince Rufus.”Â
“Good morning, Guild Master.”Â
“Let’s get right to it—I wanted to ask you two something.”Â
“What is it?”Â
I asked them if they ever summoned magical creatures outside the Summoning Guild.Â
Apparently, Selvus had summoned a newly learned magical creature in front of his family once. But only for a short time. Lala, on the other hand, had only summoned them within the Guild’s training room.Â
It seems my hypothesis might be correct. If that’s the case, maybe the magical creatures Selvus and Lala summon could develop feelings too.Â
I explained my thoughts to them. And of course, they were surprised.Â
“I never considered that. Treating magical creatures like family… Now that you mention it, Prince Rufus always does that in front of us.”Â
“I thought the Guild Master’s magical creatures were just special. But I see that wasn’t the case.”Â
They were both genuinely impressed. Judging by Lala’s tone, it seemed her idea of something being “special” had shifted from the magical creatures to me.Â
In other words, I ended up becoming someone special.Â
No, that’s not it, Lala. Sure, I might be special. But so are Selvus and Lala, and even Balt and Ray. Everyone who’s alive is someone special.Â
But if I said that now, they probably wouldn’t understand. After all, I’m the Third Prince of this country, which makes me special by default. In a feudal society, the idea that “everyone has equal value” just doesn’t fly. I hope someday they’ll come to understand.Â
“That’s why, from now on, when you two use your Summoning Skills, keep this in mind. It might change something.”Â
“Understood.”Â
“Got it.”Â
I really wish this world had the concept of keeping pets. If it did, it’d be much easier for people to see the summoned magical creatures as part of the family.Â
Spreading the greatness of Summoning Skills is going to be harder than I thought. This is going to be quite a challenge.Â
