Episode 65: In Other Words, Telepathy Is a Lie
The head chef stared intently at the metal box. Which was actually a heating cooking device. It seemed like he instinctively sensed that it was some kind of cooking tool. His gaze was as curious as that of a young boy. Even though his appearance was well past middle age, verging on elderly.
“That is, um…”
I looked to Balt and Ray for help. If I got their input, I wouldn’t be the only one to get scolded. A perfect plan—it’s not about dragging them down with me; it’s just a strategic move.
But neither Balt nor Ray met my gaze. Ugh. In that case… Selvus and Lala… No, that would be too harsh. I had no choice but to figure it out myself.
Alright, I’ll just tell him and make him promise to keep it a secret. That should work.
“This is a magical tool called a Heating Cooker. I think you already guessed, but keep it a secret from everyone, okay?”
“A magical tool…! O-Of course!”
It seemed the head chef was aware that magical tools existed in ancient times. Maybe his search for new cooking equipment led him to learn about magical cooking tools.
Seeing my innocent smile, the head chef looked a bit pale. Looks like it’ll be fine.
“We’re going to use this Heating Cooker to have Tetsujin make some sweets. Let’s start with cream puffs. I’m counting on you, Tetsujin!”
“Ma!”
Tetsujin sprang into action. Since it was teaching the head chef as it went, its movements were slower than usual. If it went all out, we’d probably get to eat sooner. But patience was key for now.
As he placed the dough for the cream puffs into the Heating Cooker, Tetsujin began making the cream for the filling.
“Ma?”
“If possible, I’d like two layers: whipped cream and custard cream.”
“Ma.”
Tetsujin gave a thumbs-up as if to say, “Leave it to me.” The gesture reminded me of a scene of falling into a blast furnace. It gave me mixed feelings.
Hm? Lala was staring at me.
“What’s up, Lala?”
“Um, I was just amazed at how well you understood what Chef Tetsujin was saying.”
“Of course! Tetsujin and I are connected telepathically.”
“Ma.”
Tetsujin gave another thumbs-up with its free hand. Did it like the gesture that much? If so, I won’t stop it.
Of course, there was no such thing as telepathy. I just guessed what it meant based on the timing. I was probably the only one here who knew there were different types of cream for cream puffs.
Even so, Lala seemed convinced and nodded earnestly. Maybe she wanted to communicate telepathically too, as she held Marmot’s face with both hands and stared deeply into its eyes. It looked like she was trying to train it.
While all this was happening, a delicious aroma began wafting from the Heating Cooker. Unable to resist, I started pacing near it. And Lala followed suit. The magical creatures also gathered, drawn by the smell.
“Is this what they call a good smell?”
“Yes, Lagios. It’s a fragrant aroma.”
“I see.”
“I’m excited to see what comes out of there.”
Tia’s eyes were sparkling with anticipation. Even the head chef seemed restless, clearly curious. Now, everyone at the Summoning Guild was eagerly awaiting the cream puffs.
A high-pitched *ding!* rang out as the Heating Cooker stopped. Tetsujin carefully took out the finished product.
Cream puffs! Although the filling wasn’t inside yet, the nostalgic shape made me smile.
I didn’t expect to feel this nostalgic.
Everyone’s eyes were sparkling with excitement. As they admired the freshly baked puff shells, Tetsujin was already preparing the next steps.
“Your Highness, what exactly is that tool?”
“That is a tool used to fill the cream inside the shell of the cream puff. You insert that tip into the middle of the shell and then fill it with whipped cream and custard cream. Tetsujin just explained that to me.”
“I see… I never knew such a tool existed.”
The head chef was genuinely impressed. Sometimes, a little white lie is necessary. The truth is, I guessed Tetsujin would need it. So I secretly took it out from inside Tora-chan.
The reason I did it secretly is that if anyone knew I was already familiar with the tool, they might get suspicious. If Brother Gilliam ever found out that I had knowledge from my previous life…………. I shudder to think about it.
While I was silently trembling with worry, the work continued smoothly. With four arms moving efficiently, Tetsujin filled the shells with cream. And finally, the long-awaited cream puffs were complete.
As expected of Tetsujin. They looked just like cream puffs from a high-end pastry shop.
“Ma.”
“Well done, Tetsujin. They’re perfect!”
“Ma!”
Tetsujin’s eyes sparkled with joy at my praise. Even though it looked like a tin robot, it clearly had emotions.
Everyone present gazed at the brilliantly shining cream puffs with sparkling eyes. I was definitely making the same face, too.
“Alright, let’s do a taste test! There are plenty, so everyone, please have some.”
I called over the hesitant servants, inviting everyone to join in. Delicious food is even better when shared.
Everyone holding a cream puff turned their eyes to me. They were waiting for me to take the first bite. Well then, no need to hold back.
“Tetsujin, I’ll have a cream puff now.”
“Ma!”
I opened my mouth wide, ready to reach the cream inside.
