Episode 71: In Other Words, It Means They’re Leveling Up
Once that was decided, things moved quickly. First, we needed to sort through the piles of paper scattered on the floor. I gathered everyone nearby.
“Could you help me organize these documents?”
“Of course. How should we do it?”
Leading the group, Lagios readily agreed. Everyone had different body sizes and varying hand movements. So, I divided them into balanced teams before having them start.
They were doing their best, using magic, splitting roles between readers and sorters. Of course, I was working hard, too. It would be great if working together like this helped them learn to coordinate better.
Once we had sorted things into broad categories, I began the verification process with Tora-chan. Meanwhile, the others continued sorting.
Watching them, Selvus and Lala sighed.
“So this is what it means for magical creatures to move on their own.”
“They think for themselves and act, even without specific instructions.”
They kept observing. They were probably trying to learn something from it. It would be nice if they found some useful hints.
Since I could do this from the start, I didn’t think I could teach them how to do it very well.
And then, from working together, I realized something. Although their movements were clumsy at first, they gradually became more efficient. In other words, they were learning.
This means that the more magical creatures are used, the better they become. It’s possible they reset each time they are summoned. But I don’t think that’s the case.
After all, they remember not just me but also the events that happened before.
“Aah, using my brain made me crave something sweet… like pudding… or pudding…”
“That yellow, jiggly pudding was delightful, wasn’t it?”
It seems Tia and Aqua really liked the pudding. See? They even remember eating pudding yesterday. No doubt about it. Magical creatures absorb knowledge and grow!
…………..But if that’s true, Tia might use her newfound knowledge for more mischief. That could be a problem. I need to think of something.
“Alright, once we’re done here, let’s take a break. There are plenty of puddings in the Small Ice Room.”
My strategy was to keep Tia in a good mood.
It’s not a passive approach. I decided to see it as a necessary ritual for maintaining smooth relationships with everyone.
“Master, pudding is good. But cream puffs would be nice too.”
“Oh, you’re a cream puff fan, Lagios? Then let’s go to the kitchen to get some. The cooks should have made them.”
I listened to everyone’s preferences. Beartolt, Moguran, and Tora-chan each wanted pudding, cream puffs, and mitarashi dango. They were very honest about their desires. Tetsujin said it couldn’t eat.
Interesting. I wonder if Tetsujin would eat oil instead? But we don’t have any… What to do about that?
The smaller members—Cayenne, Pii-chan, and Ochun—liked pudding, while Marimo preferred mitarashi dango. I was surprised mitarashi dango wasn’t more popular. But I like them. By the way, Selvus also likes mitarashi dango.
At three o’clock, we took a snack break. We had nearly finished organizing the inventory list. All that was left was to check over everything.
I asked Ray to fetch the cream puffs and mitarashi dango. Meanwhile, the rest of us prepared tea.
“Hey, Darling, what kind of place is the Duchy of Flute’s territory?”
“It’s just a bit east of here. There’s a big mountain nearby where they mine ore. But it seems the vein is running dry, and they’re getting less and less from it now.”
The Flute Duchy’s territory had prospered thanks to the abundant ores from the mine. But it seems they were too reliant on it. Perhaps that’s why the Duke’s influence has been declining.
But wait. Is that really the reason? They should have known the mine would run out someday. Would they really do nothing to prepare for that? If a valuable mine was drying up, they could simply look for another one to replace it.
“Ma.”
“Hm? Could it be that Tetsujin is interested in ores?”
“Ma.”
As it said that, it made a gesture as if bringing something to its mouth. I see, Tetsujin wants to eat ores. Well, to each their own, as the saying goes. If that’s the case, when we visit the Duke of Flute’s territory, I’ll need to get some high-quality ores for Tetsujin.
If the ores that the Third Prince’s summoned magical creature loves become known, they might end up being traded at high prices.
But even then, that wouldn’t be a fundamental solution. The only options might be to shift away from mining to another industry or to discover a new ore vein.
Since Brother Gilliam is likely supporting this, starting a new business venture seems like the most promising option. And it makes sense that we’re going there to help promote it. That sounds quite plausible.
