Episode 76: In Other Words, Mother is the Strongest
I couldn’t help but notice the wooden sword leaning behind His Majesty, who was diligently working at his desk. It was probably prepared for practice swings, but I just couldn’t picture His Majesty wielding a wooden sword.
“Mother, is there any particular reason for the wooden sword behind His Majesty?”
“Oh, that’s to prevent him from getting out of shape from sitting at his desk all the time.”
“I-I see.”
“I suppose it’s about time for a break. Alzas, practice swings now.”
Without a word, His Majesty nodded. He then began swinging the wooden sword with intense focus.
Scary! This is seriously a terrifying sight! And this was the first time I heard Mother call His Majesty by his name in public. That just shows how far gone His Majesty had been.
“I’m sorry, Mother. This is all because of me…”
“Oh, it’s not Rufus’ fault. You didn’t know, did you?”
“Well, that’s true, but…”
His Majesty’s sword swings were surprisingly well-executed. It seemed he had some talent in swordsmanship. Strangely, though, that talent was only passed down to Brother Leonard.
As this was happening, Brother Gilliam and Brother Leonard entered the dining room. They took one step back upon seeing His Majesty practicing sword swings.
“Um, Rufus, what exactly is going on here?”
“I think it’s better if Brother Gilliam doesn’t know. Ignorance is bliss, after all.”
If I were to explain about the magic tools now, there’s no doubt Brother Gilliam would turn into a second version of His Majesty. To prevent any more trouble, I couldn’t let that happen.
Brother Gilliam seemed to grasp the situation somewhat from my answer. He looked conflicted. It was if he wanted to hear more but also preferred not to know.
“So, Rufus, it’s okay if I hear about it?”
“I think Brother Leonard will be fine.”
I whispered in Brother Leonard’s ear. I made sure Brother Gilliam couldn’t hear. His eyes widened momentarily. But they then returned to normal as he glanced sympathetically at His Majesty.
“I see. I hadn’t heard about that either. I guess that shows just how cautious Mother was.”
“Exactly. And because I didn’t know, my careless actions led to all of this.”
“It’s not your fault, Rufus. If I were in your position, I probably would have done the same thing.”
Brother Gilliam was listening closely to our conversation. He seemed to have figured it all out.
He looked at us with a face full of disbelief, but I simply responded with a bright smile.
As long as the words “there are magic tools” didn’t come out of my mouth, the fact wouldn’t be acknowledged.
Naturally, Brother Gilliam realized my intentions. He hesitated, contemplating whether to ask me about it. However, upon noticing Mother’s watchful smile, he chose to remain silent.
As expected of Mother. She’s seriously incredible.
That evening’s dinner was exceptionally quiet.

A few days later. While working with everyone at the Summoning Guild to create a textbook on “The Proper Use of Summoning Skills”, Brother Leonard arrived.
Selvus and Lala had become quite accustomed to meeting royalty. They greeted him politely, albeit a bit stiffly.
“Rufus, do you remember the plan to visit the Duchy of Flute?”
“Of course. Has there been any progress?”
As Brother Leonard sat down, tea was promptly served. I stopped working and turned to face him.
That was faster than I expected. Since two members of the royal family would be going, I thought it would take longer to finalize the schedule.
“We’ll be heading to the Duchy of Flute in two days. Here’s the itinerary. The inspection will last for a total of seven days, including travel time.”
As he spoke, Brother Leonard handed me a bundle of papers. I thanked him briefly before looking through them. It seemed that the Duchy of Flute was about a two-day carriage ride away.
Come to think of it, this would be my first time leaving the royal capital. Sitting in a carriage for two days would probably make my backside sore. Plus, there was a chance I might get carriage-sick. I needed to figure out a way to deal with that.
“Um, what kind of carriage will we be using for the trip?”
“Don’t worry. The road to the Duchy of Flute is reasonably well-maintained. Also, we’ll be using the most comfortable carriage available, the one with the least amount of shaking. We’ve already gotten permission to use it.”
“Thank you very much.”
Even though I said that, it was bound to attract a lot of attention. The best carriage, huh? It’s probably that ridiculously flashy one, white with gold decorations all over it, right?
Well… if it means my backside won’t hurt and I won’t get carriage-sick, I’ll just have to accept it.
I continued to look through the papers I was given. It seemed like this set of papers listed the names of the key figures in the Duchy of Flute.
……….No way, don’t tell me I have to memorize all of these names now? It’s going to be tough to remember them just from the text alone.
Brother Leonard must have noticed the change in my expression. He looked at me with a slightly apologetic smile.
“The names on that paper are listed in order of importance from the top down. At the very least, I’d like you to remember the names near the top. If you’re curious, I can also tell you what kind of people they are. Of course, I might not know about everyone, though.”
Brother Leonard’s eyebrows drooped even lower. It seemed he wasn’t great at remembering faces and names either. Looks like I’ll have to put in extra effort to remember the names, for his sake as well.
