Episode 80: In Other Words, Asking for the Best Carriage
Our group left the royal capital through the eastern gate. The Flute Duchy is located east of the capital. And together with the eastern frontier marquisate beyond it, they protect the eastern part of the Kingdom of Eladoria.
It’s my first time outside the royal capital. I’d seen the distant landscape from the castle windows before, but I wonder what the actual view is like.
By the way, until we exited the capital, our flashy carriage attracted a lot of attention. The scene outside the small gap in the curtain was filled with people staring at us.
I guess we’ll be stared at like this throughout the journey. If possible, I would have preferred a more relaxed trip.
“What seems to be the matter?”
“I was just thinking that being royalty sure is tough.”
As I said that, I began to fluff Lagios, my source of comfort. The inside of the carriage was spacious enough that, as long as I didn’t open the curtains, it wouldn’t be a problem to summon everyone. If people who didn’t know about my Summoning Skill saw them, they might think I was being attacked by some strange creatures. That’s definitely not the case, though.
“Wow, so those are fields. The same scenery just keeps going and going.”
“Hmm, and I sense much fewer people around here.”
Aqua and Cayenne were peeking through the curtain’s gap. They were observing the outside. It seems we made it through today’s biggest challenge: the “gazes of the capital’s residents”. Though I can’t let my guard down just yet, it should be fine to look outside a bit now.
I’d heard about it, but seeing the vast farmland spreading out just outside the capital was something else. No wonder the food supply in the capital is so abundant. Then again, this likely makes it difficult to expand the city any further.
To do that, they’d have to tear down these fields. Doing such a thing would surely ruin the royal family’s reputation among the farmers. His Majesty the King would never do something so foolish—nor would Brother Gilliam, of course.
Eventually, the seemingly endless farmland gave way to a vast grassland. It looks like livestock are being raised around here.
“Look, sheep! With so many of them, no one would notice if just one went missing, right?”
“No, Tia. They’re definitely keeping count. They’d immediately notice if one went missing. So don’t even think about bringing one back.”
“Aww… But imagine how comfy it’d be to lie down on that fluffy wool.”
“…………You’ve got a point there.”
“Master, please restrain yourself.”
As I started to seriously consider it, Lagios quickly interrupted. The others stared at me with damp, reproachful eyes. It was just a joke, though.
Then again, summoning a sheep-type magical creature could be interesting. But I already have Lagios… That might be more than enough.
By this point, the number of people on the road had significantly decreased. It should be safe to open the curtains now.
Bright sunlight streamed through the window. I hadn’t realized it was this bright outside.
“Director, there’s a forest up ahead. Lots of trees everywhere.”
“Hehe, this is the kind of scenery Moguran would love. I like it too, of course.”
“Are there monsters in there?”
Tora-chan tilted its box in curiosity. Hmm, I don’t actually know. They didn’t teach us that in class. Maybe it’s because monsters living near the capital would be a serious issue. I should ask one of the knights.
I opened the window and called out to a knight riding next to the carriage.
“Are there any monsters in that forest?”
“Yes! But they’re all small monsters.”
The knight answered with a salute. Oops, I might be bothering him while he’s on duty. I should have visited the training grounds more often and gotten to know everyone better.
No choice—I’ll just stay quiet for now. Until we reach the Flute Duchy, I’ll use this time to take a nap.
—
While I lazily passed the time, the first day of our journey came to an end. Our lodging for the night was in a post town after passing through several villages and towns. It seems that at a normal pace, travelers from the capital to the Flute Duchy would naturally end up staying here for the night.
We arrived in town before sunset and headed straight to the inn where we had reservations. We do stand out, after all. I suppose they wanted to avoid unnecessary attention. In that case, they could have done something about the flashy carriage.
“Rufus, how was traveling by carriage? Did you feel any discomfort?”
“Not at all. Thanks to it, I was able to relax the whole time.”
“That’s good to hear. I’m glad I chose the best carriage. Normally, people feel unwell until they get used to it.”
Brother Leonard laughed. It sounds like he’s speaking from personal experience. I’m really glad I got to ride in the best carriage. Being a little flashy isn’t a big deal.
I flipped my hand over, completely changing my perspective on the matter.
From the carriage window, I could see the post town lined with various shops. Since we had come all this way, I wanted to take a quick look around.
“Brother Leonard, can’t we explore the town?”
“I figured you’d say that, Rufus. If we go incognito, I think we can manage it…..?”
Wait, hold on. Why did he say that like a question? And why does he have that mischievous grin on his face? Brother Leonard, are you planning something? Am I getting dragged into this? But since I was the one who asked, it’s really hard to say no now.
Unaware of my internal conflict, Brother Leonard pulled out some commoner’s clothes from who knows where. After changing, the two of us snuck out to explore the post town.
As expected of Brother Leonard, he seemed to know exactly how the security was set up. It allowed us to slip out of the inn with ease.
We’re definitely going to get scolded for this later. I should practice my distant, innocent gaze while I still can.
