Episode 84: In Other Words, Making Brother Leonard Angry Is Scary
“Rufus-sama, are you unharmed?”
“If anything had happened to you, Rufus-sama, I would have…”
“Sorry, sorry! As you can see, I’m perfectly fine! So, please stop crying!”
I did my best to comfort the dejected Balt and Ray. I should have taken them with me. I’ll be more careful next time. I made that resolution in my heart.
“Are you safe, Your Highness the Third Prince? It’s dangerous to rush off so suddenly.”
“Yeah, I know. But I just couldn’t sit still.”
“Waiting patiently for the outcome is also a duty of those in leadership.”
Even the knight assigned to protect me reprimanded me.
I see… That makes sense. Just as I was reflecting on that, Brother Leonard approached with the same smile as before.
“It seems like you’re trying to wrap things up nicely on your own, but no, that’s not happening. Rufus, you said you’d follow my orders, right?”
“No, no, Brother, you see, there’s a deep reason behind all of this…”
“Oh? Then let’s hear it.”
And so, I explained myself to Brother Leonard. I also included the scenario where he mercilessly subdued the bandits. After hearing me out, Brother Leonard twisted his mouth into a wry smile.
“It seems you don’t really know my true strength, Rufus. I suppose that makes sense since you’ve only seen me training at the practice grounds.”
Brother Leonard nodded repeatedly. He looked as if he’d come to some realization. But his smile had turned somewhat ferocious. The knights nearby had all taken a step back.
“Rufus, with bandits of this level, I can neutralize them without killing them. Yes, just by giving them a glare.”
“I-I see… Wow, I didn’t know that!”
What’s with this waterfall of cold sweat down my back? I feel a chill down to my core, but I can’t stop sweating. This… this is fear.
And Lagios… it’s completely unfazed. It looked as calm as ever. I guess this level of bloodlust isn’t even worth noticing to it. Maybe the truly terrifying one isn’t Brother Leonard but Lagios.
“I’m glad you understand. Make sure you don’t act on your own next time. Because there won’t be a next time, got it?”
“Y-yes!”
So scary! And why aren’t Lagios and Moguran defending me? They go into battle mode right away with His Majesty the King. Could it be that they dislike His Majesty? No, that can’t be… right?
After capturing the bandits, we decided to return to post town we had left that morning. It was deemed faster to go back from this location.
Although no one had died, several people were injured. It was only natural to take them back safely.
While it seemed unlikely that more bandits would appear, we still proceeded with caution. Our progress was slow. And we couldn’t return before lunchtime.
As we entered a small clearing, Brother Leonard turned around and halted the group.
“Let’s have lunch here. We can’t keep going without taking a break.”
“Understood! We’ll begin preparations right away!”
The knights moved swiftly. Apparently, the carriage was stocked with camping gear for situations like this. They set up a simple stove, and tables and chairs were arranged around it.
However, there weren’t enough for everyone. Naturally, we could sit there. But the others would have to sit on the bare ground, including the injured. It would be better if they had somewhere to sit.
Unfortunately, there were no conveniently fallen logs nearby. If that’s the case, why not just make some?
Since cutting down trees didn’t seem like a good idea, I decided to rely on Moguran.
“Moguran, can you raise the ground and make some simple benches?”
“Leave it to me.”
With a snort through its nose, Moguran made stone benches form a circle around the fire.
How is that even possible? I wondered, but I kept my thoughts to myself. I had no right to criticize since I couldn’t use magic at all.
In other words, I’m at the bottom of the magic-user caste.
“You’re quite handy, Rufus.”
“It’s not me who’s exceptional—it’s Moguran. We should have a table too, right?”
“Yeah, that would be good. Could you arrange that?”
“Of course! Moguran, could you make a nice table too?”
“Leave it to me.”
With a snort through its nose (again), Moguran created a perfectly crafted stone table near the benches. It seems it can make anything related to earth. It’s incredibly skilled.
But where did it pick up that way of speaking? Was it from me? Am I the reason?
“It talks in a peculiar way, but Moguran’s quite talented. I’d love to have it in the knight’s order.”
“Not a chance.”
“I figured as much. Then how about bringing you along, Rufus…?”
“Not happening.”
This inspection of the Flute Duchy is meant to raise awareness of my Summoning Skill. There’s no way I’d join a battle or a monster subjugation with no benefit to me whatsoever.
Brother Leonard pouted at my immediate refusal. But no matter how much he makes that face, no means no. Why does he look just like Mother when he does that? Is it genetic?
But that expression only works when a woman does it. When a man does it… well, it’s just… no, it’s really annoying.
Lunch preparations continued smoothly. And a warm stew was almost ready. For outdoor cooking, curry is the usual choice. But stew works just fine.
Come to think of it, I’ve never had curry before. Now that I’ve remembered it, I suddenly really want to try it. I’ll ask Tetsujin to make it next time. I bet it’ll make the most delicious curry ever. I’m already looking forward to it.
