Episode 86: In Other Words, This Time We Arrived Safely
After finishing lunch, we returned to the post town. I was taken back to the inn where we left this morning. And Brother Leonard headed to the residence of the magistrate who manages this post town. He told me not to leave the inn—three times.
“I get it after the first time.”
“That just shows how worried he is about you, Master.”
“More importantly, I smell something delicious.”
Moguran’s eyes were fixed on a box of sweets we received from the merchant we helped earlier. They seemed quite expensive and smelled really good.
Alright, let’s eat them. Brother Leonard didn’t say we couldn’t.
“Let’s all eat together.”
“But…”
“It’s fine, it’s fine.”
With that, I made the knights my accomplices. This way, I won’t be the only one getting in trouble.
More importantly, were those bandits just regular bandits? I’m curious, but Brother Leonard took all of them away. If they were still here, I could’ve interrogated them.
“Hey, did those bandits say anything?”
“No, nothing in particular.”
“I see. That makes it even more suspicious. If they were ordinary bandits, they would have pleaded for their lives or made a fuss.”
“Indeed, as you say, Third Prince-dono.”
The knights seemed impressed. I thought it was just common sense.
They must’ve stayed quiet because they had something they couldn’t talk about. Brother Leonard probably knows that too. And he might even be interrogating them at the magistrate’s residence right now.
Maybe that’s why he didn’t take me with him.
“Did he mention our plans from here on?”
“We are scheduled to leave tomorrow morning.”
“Then that means he’s leaving the rest to the magistrate? Or is he confident he can extract information in just one day?”
“I believe he intends to extract information.”
The knight answered firmly, his eyes showing no doubt.
Wait, does that mean………….. But I was too scared to ask any more.
In other words, Brother Leonard is good at interrogations.
Surely it’s not torture, right? I trust you, Brother Leonard.
I waited quietly, trembling a little. Brother Leonard returned to the inn around sunset.
His expression…… was the same as always. Doesn’t look like anything out of the ordinary happened. Is it safe to ask?
“Welcome back. Um, how did it go?”
“There’s nothing to worry about. I did my job properly. Just leave it to me, and you go about your day as usual.”
“Understood.”
Ah, this is one of those situations where you shouldn’t ask too much. Rufus knows. If I try to dig too deep now, it’ll only cause trouble later.
Trusting my instincts, I decided to act as if this incident never happened. I just hope the bandits receive some mercy.
—
The next day. We left the post town as if nothing had happened. So far, the knights hadn’t scolded me. Which was a relief.
Probably because, by keeping quiet about the rumors of bandits, we ended up saving the lives of citizens. I don’t know what’ll happen once we return to the castle, though.
We were a day behind schedule. But this time, we reached the territory of Duke Flute without encountering any bandits. Since it’s a region with mines, several mountains were visible ahead. Although they were still far away, they would probably be towering high above us once we got closer.
I’m kind of excited. Since being reborn in this world, I haven’t seen mountains up close. Same with the ocean. I’ve always wanted to visit one day.
We traveled through valleys nestled between the mountains and arrived at the capital of the territory. Along the way, I noticed a few fields. They gave me the impression that the food self-sufficiency rate might be low.
That must be why the mining industry, which brings in foreign income, is the lifeline of Duke Flute’s territory.
Although dairy farming also seems to be flourishing, it probably isn’t enough on its own. Since dairy farming is done in other regions too, it doesn’t offer a competitive advantage.
“So that’s the capital of Duke Flute’s territory. It looks like there’s a castle in the center of the capital.”
“That’s right. A long time ago, a king used to live there.”
“I’ve heard about that. It was back when the Kingdom of Eladoria wasn’t unified yet, right?”
The Kingdom of Eladoria was founded when the four great dukes joined forces. Because of that, each of the duke’s territories has its own castle. And in those castles, kings once resided. It’s impressive how they managed to unite as one nation.
I suppose that era was worn out by wars with neighboring countries. Maybe they needed great power to overwhelm other nations.
Surrounding the capital were tall stone walls encircling the city. I wonder if the stones used here were excavated during the development of the mines. Or perhaps it was the ability to extract stones like these that led to the mining industry flourishing. There’s a certain romanticism in imagining that part of history.
Huh? There’s a crowd of people in front of the gate. It’s probably to welcome us. Come to think of it, a horse ran ahead of us a little while ago. It must have delivered the news.
“Welcome to the capital of Flute. We’ve been expecting you.”
“It’s been a while, Captain Gazelle. We got caught up in some unexpected trouble, so we’re running behind schedule.”
“I’ve heard about that. It seems you were quite active?”
“Heh, mostly Rufus’ doing.”
Brother Leonard said this while glancing at the carriage I was in. Captain Gazelle looked over at me as well.
He was a dandy man with short gray hair and a mustache that suited him well. He was the long-serving captain of the knights of Duke Flute’s household. And he was supposedly just shy of sixty years old.
It looks like the information I got from Brother Gilliam will come in handy right away.
