Episode 91: In Other Words, She Loves Brother Leonard
While continuing to observe the training grounds, I heard a loud voice coming from outside. Could it be that Brother Leonard is inspecting the knights? If I remember correctly, that was the plan.
“Next, I shall guide you outside the mansion.”
“I’ll be in your care.”
It seemed they had coordinated the timing of my tour with the knights’ inspection. Guided by Flare-chan, I stepped out of the indoor training area to find a large number of knights already gathered. Naturally, Brother Leonard was there too.
Looking closely, there was something that looked like a ring in the distance. Were they going to duel?
Curious, I listened to Brother Leonard’s conversation. I learned that they were about to hold a mock battle there, with Brother Leonard as the opponent. I wondered if he’d be okay.
I watched anxiously. But, my worries were unfounded.
Brother Leonard was strong. So strong that I thought he should go easier on them. Flare-chan was also completely mesmerized by Brother Leonard’s overwhelming strength.
Ugh, I guess it’s better for a guy to be strong. My Summoning Skill may be powerful, but I’m just an ordinary kid myself. How disappointing. Maybe in the next life.
“Brother Leonard is really strong.”
“Indeed… he is.”
Flare-chan looked at Brother Leonard with eyes full of admiration. Well, for me, it was more like, “Yeah, obviously.”
It’s fine. I have my adorable Lagios and Moguran, after all.
Just then, Brother Leonard seemed to notice me sulking.
“How about you join, Rufus?”
“I’ll pass.”
I answered immediately. It left Brother Leonard looking confused. He probably planned to go easy on me to make me look good. But I knew my own abilities too well. It would be painfully obvious if he held back. If I took him up on his offer, it would only damage the royal family’s dignity. No thank you to a pity match.
But Flare-chan seemed eager to fight. It’s not every day you get a chance to train with the Sword Saint. Especially when he’s someone you admire.
“Miss Flare, don’t you want to spar with Brother Leonard?”
“Well, um…”
“No need to be shy. Brother Leonard, Miss Flare would like some guidance!”
“Is that so… Very well, come up here.”
“Y-yes!”
Flare-chan responded with pure joy. Her eyes were sparkling like the sun. Meanwhile, Duke Flute was holding his head in his hands.
Whether she noticed the Duke’s distress or not, Flare-chan stepped into the ring and received a wooden sword. The mock battle began right away.
Wow, she’s much stronger than I am! Good thing I didn’t go up there—I’d have made a complete fool of myself. Nice one, me. Well done, me.
As I grinned with relief, I heard dissatisfied voices from both sides. It was Lagios and Moguran. What’s up with them?
“Master, are you satisfied with this?”
“We want to see your cool side too, Director!”
“It’s fine like this. I don’t need to show off. I promised myself that on this journey, I wouldn’t cause any trouble.”
“I feel like it’s already too late for that…..…”
Ouch, Lagios, that was harsh! Its eyes were piercingly cold. It was probably referring to the incident with the bandits. But that doesn’t matter.
“It’s fine. I’ve only got one out so far.”
“One out…”
“Director…”
While we were having that conversation, the match concluded. Of course, Brother Leonard was victorious. But man, he’s really good at holding back, huh? Just look at Flare-chan’s satisfied expression.
I could already see it: she’d probably start focusing more on swordsmanship rather than mastering her Fire Magic Skill. Even Duke Flute looked stunned.
In other words, Duke Flute now had two reasons for holding his head.
After a few more people took turns challenging Brother Leonard—and getting thoroughly defeated—it was finally time to wrap things up.
Brother Leonard stood victorious. He was wearing an angelic smile as he dominated the arena. Meanwhile, Flare-chan had been watching him with reverence. She suddenly snapped back to reality.
“U-um, Rufus-sama….”
“You seemed to enjoy yourself. It’s not every day you get to see Brother Leonard fighting. Did you learn something valuable?”
“Yes, very much so.”
She flashed a bright smile in my direction. Could it be that she has a crush on Brother Leonard? Well, he is really cool, so I can’t blame her.
But I don’t want to end up getting kicked to death by a horse. So I decided to keep my mouth shut. She can feel however she wants.
After returning to the mansion, we rested in the guest room we were shown to until dinner was ready. Of course, I had a separate room from Brother Leonard.
“Man, traveling by carriage is more tiring than I expected.”
“Why didn’t you summon someone skilled in swordsmanship, Darling? Then you wouldn’t have had to feel so miserable.”
“I appreciate the thought, Tia. But I didn’t feel miserable, okay? I mean, I did think, ‘Yep, that’s about right,’ but that’s all.”
Tia and Aqua both pouted in dissatisfaction. It seemed they wanted their master to look cool.
But if I did that, it would only cause problems.
If I summoned a magical creature capable of defeating Brother Leonard, who has the Sword Saint Skill, it would devalue his abilities. It would also likely shake Brother Leonard’s confidence.
And even if my magical creature did defeat Brother Leonard, it wouldn’t benefit me at all. At best, people would just say, “Wow, that’s amazing.” Or more likely: “Oh great, he’s caused another mess.”
