Episode 95: In Other Words, There’s No “Maybe”
Balt had a very troubled look on his face. Meanwhile, Flare-chan and Ray’s eyes were sparkling with excitement. Come on, Ray, at least give a wry smile. If you keep acting like that, your partner Balt might get fed up with you.
“Rufus-sama, pretending we didn’t see this is a bit too much to ask, don’t you think?”
“Yeah, you’re right……..”
I looked again at where the mountain used to be. Yep, no matter how you look at it, it’s now just a low, gently sloping hill. The rocky surface is exposed, and the forest that should have been there is completely gone.
Heh, I really did it this time. But that disgusting visual was just too much for me to handle.
But it’s still just two outs. Even Buddha is said to forgive three times, so I should be safe one more time. Besides, this was for protecting Flare-chan. It wasn’t like I destroyed the mountain out of selfishness……… probably.
After asking Lagios to shrink down, we returned to the carriage. I thought Flare-chan might be scared of Lagios, but that didn’t seem to be the case.
“Amazing, Lagios-sama. To defeat that many monsters at once!”
She said this while fluffing up Lagios’ fur. Lagios looked quite pleased being petted. Hey, that’s supposed to be my fluffy companion.
“It is not that I am strong. It is my master who is strong. Without a strong master, summoning me would be impossible.”
“I knew it.”
How did it end up like this? Lagios puffed out its chest proudly. It looked satisfied after gaining Flare-chan’s approval.
Apparently, Lagios also felt unappreciated, just like Tia and Aqua. Even though it never said it out loud, it must have been feeling the same way.
Judging from this, it seems like the others might feel the same, too.
While I was escaping reality by thinking about how loved I was by everyone, Brother Leonard and the others returned. The knights guarding the carriage were moving about in a hurry.
Did they already finish exterminating the Goblins attacking Liberia? It feels a bit too quick for that.
“Ruuufuuus…”
“Ah, welcome back, Brother Leonard. Is everything settled over there?”
That was the lowest voice I’d ever heard. Actually, no—I have heard that tone before. It was from His Majesty the King, but the intonation was exactly the same. Just as expected from father and son.
I must not lose my composure here. I need to smile and act as if nothing happened!
Seeing my expression, Brother Leonard sighed deeply.
“If this was going to happen, I shouldn’t have left Rufus behind. I should have taken him with me. I deeply regret this.”
Looking dejected and disheartened……. What’s wrong, Brother Leonard? Did something happen over there? Not fully understanding the situation, I looked at Duke Flute, who had returned with him. His face was pale.
Well, that makes sense. If the mountain that should be there is suddenly gone, anyone would look like that. And they’d probably think it was the work of a mythical creature. Could this possibly work to my advantage?
“No, it won’t. There’s no way you can blame this on anyone else, you know?”
“What a shame. But how did you know I was thinking that?”
“Because it was obvious!”
Brother Leonard was breathing heavily, shoulders heaving. Come on now, let’s calm down.
As we continued moving in the carriage, I asked about what had happened on his side.
According to the story, although the town of Liberia was indeed attacked by Goblins, there weren’t that many of them. A knight who panicked upon seeing the scene rushed back. He thought it was an emergency.
Well, that makes sense. If the town that two royals were about to visit was under attack by monsters, they couldn’t exactly bring us there.
By the time Brother Leonard and the others arrived, most of the Goblins were already dealt with.
And right after that, a dazzling beam shot through the sky. When they looked in that direction, the mountain that should’ve been there was gone. Of course, it caused an uproar.
Oh dear, so they could see it all the way from Liberia. Hohoho.
“I see. So Rufus commanded Lagios to attack, huh?”
“Yes. To protect Miss Flare, and by extension, the people of Duke Flute’s territory, it was a necessary action.”
“Well… I guess… it couldn’t be helped?”
I gave a reasonable explanation while Brother Leonard folded his arms. He grumbled and nodded.
Come on, just admit it already. Saying, “Well done,” is your duty as my older brother, Brother Leonard.
I watched nervously. I was wondering if I might actually be forgiven for this.
“Rufus, I want to ask you something. When you saw that horde of Goblins, did you notice anything unusual?”
“No, nothing in particular. Just that they were really gross. How about you, Lagios?”
“I sensed some kind of evil presence halfway up the mountain. Well, I took care of that along with everything else.”
“That’s it!”
Brother Leonard shouted almost like a scream. Startled, Flare-chan clung to me. Seeing this, Duke Flute gave a meaningful smile and nodded slightly.
It seems that Flare-chan successfully presented herself as my potential fiancée. I guess every cloud has a silver lining, huh?
But what exactly did Lagios find? It never reported anything to me about that.
Communication is important, you know. Even though I tend to forget that myself.
