Let's Do Some Questions - Chapter 7
Song Man sat in her seat, lost in thought.
Over the past few years, she had grown used to the shift in people’s gazes, from effusive praise to utter disdain. At first, her emotions would fluctuate, but she forced herself to endure it. After that, it seemed there was nothing she couldn’t tolerate; it all depended on her mood.
Today should have been the same, but for some reason, she felt like it should be this way.
She didn’t care about the surrounding gazes, whether they were of astonishment or admiration.
But the smile of the person in front of her seemed to lift her mood quite a bit.
Song Man figured it was probably because the other person was good-looking; who doesn’t like something pleasant to the eye?
For the rest of the class, Song Man continued to work on practice problems on her phone.
After class, Song Man slumped onto her desk and started catching up on sleep.
When Chu Fengqiu walked over, she saw Song Man with her head resting on her arm, her face slightly distorted from the pressure.
The part of her cheek that was squeezed looked white and soft, as if it would feel very nice to touch.
Chu Fengqiu tilted her head and saw someone secretly watching Song Man’s sleeping face, feeling a slight strangeness in her heart.
“Could I borrow your physics homework to look at?”
Chu Fengqiu asked politely. The boy quickly withdrew his gaze and fumbled on his desk to find his physics workbook for Chu Fengqiu.
Chu Fengqiu just stood there and started looking, making the boy so nervous he thought there was something wrong with his physics homework, and he kept waiting for Chu Fengqiu to say something.
But until the class bell rang, Chu Fengqiu put his homework down without saying anything was wrong.
“What was that about?”
The boy looked at his deskmate, confused.
“How would I know? Maybe she was using your homework to think about a problem. She definitely wasn’t looking at you.”
His deskmate shrugged, indicating that it was hard to guess what top students were thinking.
“Well, I definitely know.”
The boy scoffed softly, wanting to look at Song Man again, but found she was already awake.
Song Man was woken by the class bell and looked up to see the teacher walking in.
Song Man continued to play the role of a poor student, lowering her head and starting to sleep.
She spent the morning half-asleep, occasionally playing on her phone. As soon as lunch break started, Song Man walked out, carrying the small bag Deng Wei had brought that morning.
Deng Wei was waiting for Song Man downstairs. As soon as he saw her come out, he immediately went up to her.
“Man Jie, what are we eating for lunch today?”
“Let’s go find Ailan.”
“Okay.”
Riding motorcycles to school wasn’t allowed, and Song Man wouldn’t ride her precious bike there anyway; it was too flashy. She and Deng Wei took a taxi to Ailan’s place.
Ailan should be working now.
The hair salon she worked at was outside a residential complex, and business was quite good.
When Song Man arrived, Ailan had just finished with a customer and was smoking at the entrance.
Her hair was Arctic green, and holding a cigarette, she inexplicably exuded a sense of weariness.
Ailan was a year older than Song Man. She had studied hairdressing since junior high, working her way up from an apprentice. When she wasn’t with Song Man, she always seemed a bit lifeless.
Ailan saw Song Man and quickly threw her cigarette on the ground, stepping on it to put it out, looking like she had been caught doing something wrong.
“What are you smoking?”
Song Man handed the bag over.
“Liqun.”
Liqun, fourteen yuan a pack. Song Man nodded and said, “Making progress,” which embarrassed Ailan so much she wished she could bury her head in the nearby sewer.
Before, Ailan used to smoke cheap cigarettes that cost a few yuan. Song Man had encountered it once and said it was too smoky, so Ailan never smoked in front of her again.
It wasn’t that she minded others smoking, but she felt that even if you smoked, you shouldn’t smoke low-quality ones, as they were harder on the body. So last time, she swiped a pack of high-end cigarettes from her dad and gave them to Ailan, telling her to take better care of herself.
If a person doesn’t take care of themselves, expecting others to cherish them is just a dream.
“How did it taste?”
Ailan’s eyes were full of anticipation.
She had tried it several times and only sent it to Song Man via Deng Wei when she felt it was just right.
“It was quite tasty, but there’s no need to go to such trouble next time. It costs money and effort. You’d be better off treating yourself to a good meal.”
Song Man knew it was Ailan’s thoughtful gesture, but there was no need for Ailan to spend this time and energy looking after her.
“As long as it tasted good.”
Ailan smiled, put the bag inside the hair salon, but came out a moment later with a crestfallen face.
“Busy?”
Ailan nodded, a little unwilling.
Song Man had finally come to see her, but the salon was busy with customers, and she couldn’t leave.
“Then you go ahead and be busy. Eating can happen anytime.”
“Then let’s do it this afternoon. I’ll definitely be free then. I’ll message you. I’ll treat you… you guys to a meal this afternoon.”
Ailan said quickly.
“With me here, do my followers need to treat?”
Song Man waved her hand, acting like the boss.
Deng Wei couldn’t get a word in edgewise, watching Song Man and Ailan talk back and forth, and followed along in a daze.
Speaking of which, when Song Man ate with people, she usually paid, unless it was someone setting up a situation or apologizing.
Like that barbecue yesterday that Deng Wei, that little punk, treated her to, he definitely should have paid.
During the meal, Deng Wei’s mouth didn’t stop chattering.
“Man Jie, how does it feel to be in the top student class? Do you feel like you’ve been influenced?”
“Tsk, that word is really the peak of your vocabulary usage.”
“Well, yeah, I’m a cultured person, okay? But if you improve in the top student class, Man Jie, you won’t be able to suffer together with me anymore.”
You see, Song Man was always last, while Deng Wei hovered within the bottom ten.
“How can you compare yourself to me? I get last place by handing in a blank test, you get bottom ten by filling it out. What are you bragging about?”
Song Man rolled her eyes. She was too lazy to make new levels of mistakes, so she simply only answered multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank questions, skipping anything that required a lot of writing.
Essays were always blank; otherwise, she wouldn’t consistently get last place.
“What? Man Jie, are you going to start writing on the test papers?”
Deng Wei was shocked.
Song Man rolled her eyes at him again, too lazy to speak.
She was still considering it.
“Oh right, do you know this person, Chu Fengqiu?”
Song Man suddenly remembered this and asked Deng Wei about her.
Deng Wei was practically the school’s gossip expert, from teachers and the principal down to senior and junior students; he had all the information.
After all, as Song Man’s chief follower, he had to have some skills.
“Wow, Man Jie, you don’t know Chu Fengqiu?! Chu Fengqiu!”
Deng Wei got a little excited mentioning her, then slapped his head, remembering that Chu Fengqiu was also in Class One.
Holy crap, those guys in Class One must be living the dream! Two big beauties in their class, just thinking about it makes you happy.
Although these two beauties were probably women they could never get.
Deng Wei even stopped eating his meal and started talking non-stop to Song Man about Chu Fengqiu.
She was the school beauty from the moment she enrolled, the most popular person on forums and message boards. Countless boys wanted to confess to her. Not only was she good-looking, but her grades were also excellent. She entered Qingcheng No. 1 High as the top scorer in the entrance exam and never slipped up after that, always ranking first in the school. In the provincial joint exams, she also dominated, never dropping out of the top three, truly a legendary figure.
And she wasn’t just a bookworm; she could play the piano and violin, and had studied ballet and folk dance, winning quite a few medals and certificates from competitions.
She started participating in Olympiad Math competitions in elementary school, winning first prize in the Hope Cup National Youth Mathematics Competition. In junior high, she participated in the National Mathematics Invitational Competition and won second prize.
In short, she was awesome in every way, a school legend, and the teachers’ favorite.
“And her personality is especially good. She’s not the type who looks down on people. She doesn’t play ambiguous games with anyone; she either ignores them or rejects them cleanly and directly. Last time my nose bled, she even lent me a tissue.”
“How can there be such a perfect goddess?”
Deng Wei exclaimed.
Song Man pulled out a tissue and wiped the drool from the table in front of her.
“You like her that much?”
“Like… no, no, no, how could I? The number one in my heart is definitely Man Jie! That’s irreplaceable!”
Deng Wei instantly sobered up and grinned at Song Man.
Song Man stood up and went to pay.
Deng Wei quickly paid for his own meal, not letting Song Man treat him.
Song Man wasn’t dissatisfied; she just thought that girl was quite impressive.
Chu Fengqiu.
She softly repeated the name.
A warm breeze blew by, scattering Song Man’s jumbled thoughts.
Changing seats every Friday afternoon was a rule in Class One. It happened between the end of the afternoon classes and the start of evening self-study. The seating chart was projected onto the screen, and everyone could find their seat and switch.
Song Man sat next to Chu Fengqiu, and it was in the first row.
Not having been this close to the podium in years, Song Man could feel her parents’ painstaking efforts.
“Do you want me to help you pack up?”
Chu Fengqiu looked at Song Man’s messy desk and offered to help.
Chu Fengqiu’s desk was clean and tidy, just like the impression she gave people.
“No need, I can do it myself.”
Song Man took everything out of her drawer and put it on the desk. Besides books and workbooks, she didn’t have many things.
Chu Fengqiu nodded and watched Song Man pack up.
Song Man put all her books into the drawer. Before, she would stack them on the desk to at least hide her phone from the teacher’s sight and keep them from being bothered. But now that she was in the first row, the fixed iron podium was the best barrier, allowing her desk to be a bit cleaner.
Sitting next to Chu Fengqiu, Song Man suddenly felt the air was a bit fresher.
This was definitely not a compliment; it was a statement of fact.
A bunch of guys in the science class always smelled stuffy, but a girl’s seat emitted a clean, pleasant scent.
The bell for evening self-study rang. The homeroom teacher looked at the newly changed seats and mentioned something.
“The monthly exam starts on Wednesday. I hope everyone can seize the time to review the content they’ve already learned, preview the upcoming material, and get good results on the test.”
Unlike Class Eleven, where students would wail and howl at the mention of an exam, Class One was incredibly quiet.
Everyone started lowering their heads to do homework. The homeroom teacher’s gaze lingered on Song Man for a moment, but he still didn’t say anything and walked out.
With no one supervising the evening self-study, Song Man took out her phone.
But before she could even put it on the desk, her wrist was gently held.
Song Man cursed, “Screw it.” Chu Fengqiu, with her sharp ears, heard it and raised an eyebrow.
“Screw… who?”
The voice was low, with a hint of moist softness, ringing in Song Man’s ear.
Song Man was startled.
Do all your goddesses talk like this?
