Let's Do Some Questions - Chapter 91
After standing rooted to the spot, her mind blank for a while, Song Man suddenly snapped back to reality, feeling a bit silly. Love was truly terrifying; it made her feel like she had become delicate.
If someone had told Song Man back then that one day she would feel an emptiness in her heart because her girlfriend wasn’t home, Song Man would have beaten them to death.
But now… well, some things are just unpredictable.
Song Man lay back down on the bed and sent Chu Fengqiu a WeChat message saying she had finished showering.
【Lao Chu】: Did you blow-dry your hair?
Song Man knew she would ask that, so she quickly replied that she had. Even though she only blew it for two minutes and her hair was still wet, it still counted as blowing it, right?
【Chu Fengqiu】: Then I need to check.
Just as Song Man saw that message, the screen showed a video call request.
Song Man answered the call, facing the camera with not much confidence.
Chu Fengqiu was in her own room on the other side. The white shirt she was wearing looked familiar. Song Man usually had a bad memory, but the moment she saw it, she suddenly remembered she seemed to have worn it before.
“Didn’t you bring pajamas back? Why are you wearing this?” Song Man asked, pretending not to know, getting in the first word.
“My girlfriend isn’t by my side, so I can only sleep in a girlfriend shirt.”
“Nonsense, this is clearly your own shirt.” What kind of girlfriend shirt was this?
“My girlfriend wore it, so it counts as my girlfriend’s shirt now,” Chu Fengqiu said with a smile.
The shirt had been washed and no longer carried Song Man’s scent, but because Song Man had worn it, she cherished this old shirt especially.
Song Man originally wanted to say that she should have let Chu Fengqiu take one of her pajamas home, but then she thought that sounded a bit perverted and involuntarily shivered. It was too mushy.
Chu Fengqiu saw Song Man shiver and thought she was cold, telling Song Man to cover herself well with the blanket.
After turning on the air conditioning and pulling up the blanket, Song Man lay on her stomach, watching Chu Fengqiu on the screen, gazing quietly without speaking.
Chu Fengqiu also didn’t break the silence, looking back at Song Man across the screen, silently comforting her lover’s low mood.
“I really wish tomorrow would come slower.”
Tomorrow was Lunar New Year’s Eve, and she would inevitably see Song Qinglan. There wasn’t even time to avoid her and cool down.
Song Man just felt annoyed. By speaking her mind today, she had essentially broken the thin layer of paper between her and Song Qinglan. The surface calm was shattered, revealing the scarred interior.
She didn’t know how Song Qinglan would react when she saw her tomorrow. At this point, Song Man realized she still held a glimmer of hope for Song Qinglan.
She hoped Song Qinglan would avoid her; that would be better than her being self-righteous. If that happened, she would be truly disappointed.
Song Man didn’t want to make things too ugly, leading to an irreversible situation.
Although Song Qinglan’s methods were despicable, she had, after all, genuinely been with her for so many years.
“You don’t want to see your sister?”
Chu Fengqiu always felt that the relationship between Song Man and Song Qinglan wasn’t as simple as it appeared on the surface, and the conflict wasn’t just this one time. However, she couldn’t see the full picture. She knew this was something hidden deep in Song Man’s heart, waiting for the day Song Man could confide in her.
“Don’t mention her.” Song Man frowned, still remembering that slap. Annoying, the three words “Song Qinglan” were the switch for Song Man’s irritable mood.
She didn’t want to completely fall out with Song Qinglan and become strangers, but she also couldn’t continue being close as if nothing had happened.
She just hoped that in the future, they could be sisters calmly, not relying on each other, not scheming against each other. That would be enough.
“Auntie Song and Uncle Xu probably don’t know about this, right?” Chu Fengqiu didn’t follow along and change the subject. She didn’t mention Song Qinglan but brought up the matter itself.
This was something Song Man might have to face. Chu Fengqiu didn’t just want to make Song Man happy; she also wanted to help Song Man actually solve some problems.
“My dad doesn’t know yet. My mom… hard to say.” Song Man thought about this, and her irritable mood turned into guilt.
Even if her parents doted on her, if they knew she went racing and even signed a waiver of liability, she would definitely be punished severely.
Song Man mused that if Song Qinglan knew, her mom probably wouldn’t be unaware. But it was hard to say, because Song Man didn’t go in a high-profile way, and the bike she rode wasn’t the one she usually used for races. Guan Lang and Qin Xiangyi definitely wouldn’t talk too much.
“Then…”
Chu Fengqiu’s voice suddenly became inaudible, and the screen froze for a moment.
Song Man thought someone must be calling her, and then she saw ‘Mom’ flashing on the caller ID.
Oh no, speak of the devil.
“Hello, Mom, why are you calling me suddenly?”
“If you’re not coming home, can’t Mom call you?”
“Of course you can, it’s just that Dad already called earlier, and I thought you knew I wouldn’t be coming tonight and would meet up with you tomorrow.”
“Your dad probably didn’t know you went out to play today.” Song Zici’s voice didn’t carry any blame, but it made Song Man’s heart sink.
Her mother usually doted on her, but not unconditionally. When Song Qinglan first didn’t let her race, Song Man had put up quite a fight, making a fuss in front of Song Zici for a while, but Song Zici didn’t agree and didn’t buy her a bike afterward.
“Cough, cough, cough, Mom, aren’t I fine? I just went out to play for a bit, and I was very careful about my safety. I wouldn’t mess around at all.”
“Did you argue with your sister at home?” Song Zici didn’t dwell on the matter of her playing around but directly brought up the conflict between Song Man and Song Qinglan.
Song Man’s cheerful attitude immediately disappeared, and she responded with a heavy heart.
Song Man wasn’t surprised that her mom knew about her argument with Song Qinglan tonight; that maid saw it, and there were surveillance cameras at home. What she was wondering was whether her mom knew the content of her argument with Song Qinglan.
Actually, Song Man wasn’t very afraid of her mother knowing the truth behind the matter; she was just worried about her dad knowing.
Her mom gave her a strong feeling; she was a successful businesswoman who had the final say in decisions. In terms of being domineering, Song Qinglan and Song Man were actually both like her.
“Your sister… she was just worried about you.”
“I know, Mom, did you call tonight just to tell me this?” Song Man interrupted, cutting off the conversation. She knew Song Qinglan was worried about her, but this kind of worry was truly hard to accept.
“You… forget it. I know you understand in your heart. If you feel wronged, remember to tell Mom. Mom just hopes you can live happily and do what you like, but please don’t do anything too dangerous, or we’ll all worry, okay?”
“Okay, okay, I know, Mom. Goodnight.”
Song Man hung up the phone and breathed a sigh of relief. She thought her mom was going to lecture her, but thankfully she didn’t.
After the call ended, the video connection resumed. Song Man happily told Chu Fengqiu that she didn’t have to worry about being scolded tomorrow.
While Song Man’s side was warm and cozy, the Song family residence was filled with a heavy atmosphere.
Song Qinglan stood straight in her mother’s study, her lips pressed together, her expression cold.
“The New Year is approaching, so I won’t scold you. Be more careful next time.” Song Zici tapped the desk, giving Song Qinglan a warning.
Song Qinglan’s thoughts were in turmoil because of Song Man’s words, and her face was blank, devoid of expression.
“Alright, you can go out now. When you see Manman tomorrow, remember to coax her.”
Song Qinglan pulled at the corners of her mouth, trying to force a smile, but found it difficult.
It was already beyond coaxing. She didn’t know when she had been exposed, or when Song Man had found out about that matter. If it was because of that, then Song Man’s change in attitude made sense.
But how long ago was that? It must have been a very, very long time ago.
Song Qinglan left the study absentmindedly, her mind a chaotic mess of voices.
Perhaps due to the emotional rollercoaster of the day, Song Man quickly felt tired. She yawned, feeling overwhelmingly sleepy.
“Feel your hair, is it dry?”
“It’s pretty much dry.” Song Man ran a hand through her hair, responding lazily.
“Then go to sleep quickly. When you open your eyes, something happy will happen.”
“Okay.” Song Man half-closed her eyes, drowsily thinking that tomorrow was Lunar New Year’s Eve, which counted as a happy thing, right?
Song Man put her phone aside, pulled up the blanket, and closed her eyes.
Chu Fengqiu looked at the phone screen where the video call had ended, thought for a moment, put on her shoes, and went out.
“Ah Qiu, where are you going?”
“Grandpa, why aren’t you asleep yet?” Chu Fengqiu paused her action of putting a note on the table and put it back in her pocket.
“Can’t sleep, just sitting up for a bit.”
“Has Grandma gone to sleep?”
“She took her medicine and is asleep.”
“That’s good. I’m going out for a bit and will be back tomorrow.”
“What are you going to do?”
“Something I really want to do.”
Grandpa was silent for a moment, then nodded.
“Go.”
Song Man fell asleep quickly, but her sleep was restless.
She had a nightmare again.
When she was woken up by her phone ringing, her forehead was still covered in cold sweat.
She picked up her phone as if saved, saw Chu Fengqiu’s caller background, and felt much more at ease.
“Why are you calling?” Her voice was a little hoarse, tinged with sleepiness.
Song Man checked the time. She thought she had only slept for a little while, but when she saw the phone showing it was 3:50 AM, she was stunned.
Why was Chu Fengqiu calling at this hour? Was she still awake?
“I originally wanted to just come in, but I was afraid the sound of opening the door would scare you, so I woke you up instead.” Chu Fengqiu could have just entered, but she was afraid Song Man might think it was a bad person if she heard the noise, so she called instead.
“Mm-hmm… Huh?!” Song Man’s mind was groggy, and she belatedly realized what Chu Fengqiu’s words meant.
“How did you come?!”
Song Man didn’t even bother putting on shoes, grabbed her phone, and ran out barefoot, opening the front door.
As soon as she opened the door, she saw Chu Fengqiu standing at the entrance, holding her phone.
Song Man threw herself into her arms, hugging her waist tightly.
“How did you come?” Song Man murmured, drawing warmth from Chu Fengqiu.
“I wanted to see you, so I came.” Chu Fengqiu stroked Song Man’s hair, gently rubbing her lover’s back in her arms, soothing her emotions.
“I had a nightmare. It’s a good thing you woke me up,” Song Man said muffledly, buried in Chu Fengqiu’s embrace.
“I told you something happy would happen when you woke up.” Chu Fengqiu held Song Man and walked inside, closing the door.
Using the light from her phone, she saw Song Man’s bare feet and wrapped her arm around Song Man’s waist.
“Hey, hey, hey, Chu Fengqiu, I’m heavy!”
“Ah, ah, ah, ah, be careful, don’t drop me!”
“Chu Fengqiu!!!”
“Hmm?”
“How can I like you so much?”
