Little Blind Girl - Chapter 5
After lunch, Su Ruan took a half-hour nap at home, then got up and went to school. She changed into a new school uniform, and her petite and delicate appearance was enhanced by the loose clothing. A piece of green cloth tied in a bow at the back of her head covered her eyes.
As soon as she came out, Ke Congying put down his phone and followed her. He’d rushed over after returning home to eat. He ate an ice cream cone at the small supermarket’s entrance, talked with the shopkeeper for half an hour, and played with his phone when he was bored before she arrived. He kept a close distance from her since he wanted to know how she normally went to school.
Su Ruan went forwards, one step at a time, holding the guide rod. When she approached the first traffic light, she listened carefully to the traffic. An old man beside her saw that she couldn’t see, and reminded her loudly, “Girl, the light is green. ”
“Thank you, mister.” Su Ruan politely expressed her gratitude and resumed walking.
There was no one around the second traffic light, so Su Ruan waited with the cane. She began walking forwards after listening carefully and not hearing any cars. A motorcycle raced by like a gust of wind as it turned from the crossroads, bringing the deafening boom of the engine with it. Su Ruan couldn’t see anything; she only heard it and came to a halt.
“Do you know how to fucking ride a bike?!” yelled someone in the distance.
Ke Congying frowned and pulled Su Ruan to him, shouting at the man in the helmet. After being chastised, the man knew he was wrong, but he didn’t alight. He flipped open his helmet, spat on the ground, and rode away.
“Fuck!” Ke Congying wanted to run after the guy, “You fucking stop right there!”
Su Ruan grabbed him in desperation, her body staggering after him and almost falling.
Ke Congying turned around to support her and then inquired, “Are you alright?”
She was just fine. When the motorcycle was three metres away from Su Ruan, it began to veer to the side, but because Ke Congying was behind her, he didn’t notice and only saw that stupid motorcycle almost hit her.
“…I’m alright.” Su Ruan had already recognized his voice and thought of his “hard as hell” statement for no reason. She stood there stiffly, unsure of what he wanted to do.
“Okay,” Ke Congying said as he withdrew his hands. He then put his hands in his pockets and stood half a meter away.
Hearing his footsteps, Su Ruan was not sure whether he was leaving or following her, so she walked forward carefully holding the guide rod.
Ke Congying followed Su Ruan all the way, watching her walk into the school, greet the guard at the door, and proceed step by step towards the school building and then up the stairs. The cane made a steady rhythm on the stairs, gradually drifting away with her footsteps.
Class One was on the fifth floor. It was the best class at No.2 High School, with many top students.
Ke Zongying’s class was on the first floor. The worst class in the whole high school, Class Thirteen. Even the name gave off an unlucky vibe.
He watched Su Ruan walk towards Class One without stopping, saw her enter the class that had only a few students at the time, saw her find her seat and sit down, then pull out a Braille1Braille is a system of reading and writing by touch used by the blind. Although the hand he touched today was soft, the pads of the index and middle fingers had thin layers of calluses. He leant on the railing and discreetly watched her through the back door.
Su Ruan sat quietly, her eyes covered with a green cloth strip. Her bright red mouth opened and closed, like she was silently reading the words on her fingertips. From a distance, Ke Congying could imagine her soft voice. He suddenly wondered how lovely it would sound if his name fell from that mouth. Especially when… she was pressed beneath him.
Beryline: Yo! Bro, slow down a little 😅
