- Chapter 1 - Section 15
As the workday neared its end, I nervously called Xixi. She was still in bed, and the weight in my chest instantly lifted. Wait for me, I said. I’ll cook dinner when I get home.
Okay, I’ll get up now. You cook dinner and wait for me. I want to eat blah blah blah blah.
I quickly packed up and rushed home, hoping to intercept her—to keep her home with either my body or delicious food. But no one was there.
What to do? Face the music, I guess. I washed my face and started cooking scrambled eggs with tomatoes, braised pork ribs. Just as the fragrant aroma of the ribs began to waft from the pot, the doorbell rang. I practically pounced on the door. Xixi… Damn it, it’s Lao Mi. Before I could close the door, she pushed past me and barged in.
How did you find my place? Get out now! Xixi will be back soon!
I’m close with the property management girl. I just asked her. She’s still out, but she’ll be back soon, Lao Mi said, sidestepping me to sit on the sofa. Don’t worry, I made sure she didn’t see me. But I’ll wait for her here.
What do you want?! Xixi’s family is in trouble right now. If you provoke her now, I can’t guarantee she’ll stay rational enough to talk to you. If you have a grudge against me, take it out on me! Even if you don’t like her, you can’t do this now. If you want me to keep you company, just call me anytime. But you absolutely cannot provoke her right now. I stared at Lao Mi, feeling like I should be offering her tea in apology.
Heh, your cooking smells good… Don’t you want to know why I’m making trouble for you two? Just waiting for the show to start? Hearing her words, I wanted to take a blunt knife and grind it against her face to see just how thick her skin really was.
Get out! I’m not interested in your gossip! I nearly screamed. The sound of the door opening behind me made me lose focus for a split second. Lao Mi sprang up from the sofa, grabbed me in a tight embrace, and pressed her lips against mine.
This is so melodramatic, I can’t even write this anymore. I must have watched too many TVB dramas to come up with such a ridiculous scene. Please forgive the absurdity.
Lao Mi held me tightly, his arm clamped around my head. In a panic, I jabbed him in the chest with a One-Finger Zen Strike. He yelped and released me. I turned to see Xixi standing motionless in the doorway, having witnessed the entire explicit scene. I rushed over to pull her into the bedroom, but she shook off my hand, a large tear rolling down her cheek. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out.
My heart pounded so hard it felt like it would burst. Xixi lowered her head and took a deep breath. I knew that if we were alone, she would have burst into tears. I also knew that if Xixi’s mental state suddenly collapsed, I would be the final straw that broke her.
The room fell into a deathly silence. Lao Mi, acting as if nothing had happened, settled back onto the sofa. Xixi tilted her head back, sniffled, and walked over to Lao Mi. I quickly scanned the room for potential weapons—fruit knives, teacups, anything she could use. Given Xixi’s temper, she would undoubtedly want to eliminate both Lao Mi and me; the only question was who would be first.
I held my breath, bracing myself for Xixi’s outburst. Instead, she whispered, Mi Xiaonan… how could it be you?
