Long Time No See (GL) - Chapter 10
After this commotion, things began to escalate. Someone at the airport filmed a short video, and the media simultaneously published the news. Yun Shu immediately arranged for Gu Weiran to be taken to a hotel and went straight to the company herself.
The Mind Virtue Group headquarters is in A City’s famous business district. The hotel faces the Mind Virtue building across the road. Gu Weiran’s room was a suite, and she could see the Mind Virtue offices from the balcony.
She wasn’t in the mood to rest. She wanted to dive back into work but couldn’t concentrate. Yun Shu was in danger now. Who knew if today’s incident was the beginning or the end?
She didn’t dare recall the scene just now; whenever she did, her heart would pound with fear.
The cramps in her fingers hadn’t subsided, and Gu Weiran felt terrible. Her calf also started to feel uncomfortable. She began to pace back and forth, flexing her fingers, trying to alleviate the stinging pain running through her tendons.
If she couldn’t recover, the next phase would definitely be a high fever. This strange condition still couldn’t be diagnosed. In the past, there were folk beliefs that being startled caused one to lose a part of their soul, which required a “soul-calling” ritual to recover.
But for Gu Weiran, no method ever worked.
She had always been carefully looked after. Truth be told, she rarely experienced major frights during her upbringing. After meeting Yun Shu, it had only flared up twice.
After Yun Shu left, she barely had this experience again.
She couldn’t afford to collapse right now. What if Yun Shu needed her? Moreover, she had so much work waiting in Xuan An.
The more she worried, the more likely it was to happen. Gu Weiran’s symptoms showed no signs of improvement. Instead, she began to feel chills, sometimes cold, sometimes hot—like a mix of ice and fire.
Rest, a good sleep will fix it!
Perhaps the bumpy journey was what caused the shock.
Gu Weiran shivered and burrowed under the covers, then felt the world spin. Soon, she lost consciousness.
But she seemed to be dreaming of Yun Shu again.
Otherwise, why would she hear her calling out?
“Weiran~”
Gu Weiran heard the voice but couldn’t respond. She felt like she was trapped in a volcano, surrounded by raging fire. Her body seemed to be burning, the heat painful.
She was delirious with fever, murmuring something unintelligible.
“Weiran~” Yun Shu’s voice drifted to her ears. Gu Weiran felt a cool hand touch her forehead, easing the burning torment.
“You’re so hot, and you said you weren’t startled.”
Yun Shu pressed her own forehead against Gu Weiran’s. Gu Weiran’s scalding skin burned her heart. She quickly brought a basin of water, wrung out a towel, and placed it on her head.
This time, Gu Weiran opened her eyes. Though her vision was blurry, she saw Yun Shu’s worried expression. She couldn’t tell if it was a dream or a hallucination, only asking weakly, “Aren’t you in a meeting? Why did you… come back?”
Perhaps only in a dream would she speak to Yun Shu so gently.
“I was worried about you.” Yun Shu’s eyes were filled with distress. She held Gu Weiran’s hand, rubbing it to warm her.
“I actually… haven’t been like this… for a long time.”
“Mmm~” Yun Shu kept her head lowered. She used the pad of her thumb to smooth out Gu Weiran’s cramped fingers, repeating the motion over and over.
Perhaps when she was weak, her heart was easily filled with fragility and sentimentality. Gu Weiran’s eyes stung with the urge to cry. She gazed at Yun Shu, trying to curl her fingers to hold her.
But the moment her fingers bent, Yun Shu smoothed them out again.
“Don’t move around.” Yun Shu murmured softly. Gu Weiran obediently gave up the struggle.
It was a dream anyway. In a dream, she could still regard Yun Shu as a reliance and even a source of deep affection. Only at this moment did she realise that Yun Shu’s departure had left her with endless loneliness.
She had thought she was very open-minded, indifferent, and didn’t care.
“Don’t do this again, don’t do this for anyone, you are the most important person.” Yun Shu said calmly, her hands never stopping their work.
“My body is faster than my brain. What can I do?”
Yun Shu stopped rubbing her hand, looked up at Gu Weiran, and moved her lips but didn’t speak. A profound silence fell between them until the hotel staff delivered the medicine.
“Does your head hurt?”
Gu Weiran nodded.
Yun Shu picked Ibuprofen from the pile of medicine, helped Gu Weiran lean on her shoulder, and fed her the pill. She set the water glass down and tried to lay Gu Weiran back down, but was held tightly.
“Lie down, I’ll massage your legs.”
Gu Weiran rested her head on Yun Shu’s shoulder, shaking her head.
“If I lie down, I’ll wake up. When the dream ends, I’ll have to return to reality, and I’ll continue to dislike you, and remember all the unhappy things from the past.”
So, she thought she was dreaming.
Yun Shu laughed softly, merely patting her shoulder, letting Gu Weiran lean against her like that.
Gu Weiran’s whole body ached, and her head was throbbing, but she just didn’t want to close her eyes.
If she lost consciousness, this scene would be forever trapped in the dream, never to be seen again. Perhaps when she woke up, she wouldn’t even remember any of it.
It turned out that in her sleep, she was so attached to Yun Shu.
“I’m sorry, Weiran. I shouldn’t have forced you to come, and I shouldn’t have let you be scared.” Yun Shu was filled with guilt. She hadn’t expected something like this to happen. She had underestimated people’s malice and the consequences.
If it hadn’t been for Sister Hong being there, one of them and Gu Weiran would surely have ended up in the hospital today.
“It’s not because of myself, but because you were almost hurt that I got scared. Every time I think about it, I’m afraid, and the fear makes me cramp. I’m useless. I’m this old, and I still get this sickness, and I need you to take care of me…” Gu Weiran’s eyelids grew heavier. She tried to alleviate her drowsiness by talking, but the more she spoke, the sleepier she got. “Don’t let anything happen to you. Although I hate what you did, although I’ve always thought you were ungrateful, although…”
Before falling into a deep sleep, Gu Weiran said several “although’s” but failed to say the “but.”
“Silly girl~ I understand.”
Yun Shu smiled faintly, stroked her face, gently laid her flat on the bed, and began to massage her cramped calf. She gazed at the sleeping Gu Weiran, recalling the past, and couldn’t help the slight upturn of her lips.
Yun Shu grew up without a father, taking her mother’s surname. When she was 16, her mother, Yun Xiwei, suddenly disappeared. At the time, Yun Shu was in her first year of high school at Xuan An Middle School. She was admitted to the top class with a score in the city’s top ten, which is how she met Gu Weiran’s mother, Lin Yun.
Lin Yun was a high school English teacher and Yun Shu’s homeroom teacher at the time. After Yun Xiwei disappeared, Yun Shu lost her source of income, and it was Lin Yun who stepped in to help her.
Yun Shu’s academic performance was outstanding, and she ranked first in the entire school during the final exam. Unfortunately, Yun Xiwei was not found by the time summer vacation arrived. Yun Shu’s tuition and living expenses became a huge problem.
She had never met any other relatives since childhood. After her mother’s disappearance, she became a child no one cared about.
The Yun Shu of that time was very stubborn and strong-willed. She planned to drop out and work, earning money to support herself while looking for her mother.
How could Lin Yun bear to see such an excellent student give up on her life? She immediately decided to foster Yun Shu and brought her home to care for her.
Lin Yun’s husband was Yun Shu’s Physics teacher. The two reached an agreement on fostering Yun Shu, and the school also provided a partial scholarship, entrusting Lin Yun with her care.
And so, Yun Shu moved into the Gu family home, meticulously cared for by Lin Yun, and met the nine-year-old Gu Weiran.
She remembered when she was little, Gu Weiran always liked to follow her, calling “Sister Yun.” They often did homework together, were lazy together, and secretly snacked together.
Lin Yun knew about their little tricks but never exposed them.
Yun Shu also remembered the first time she saw Gu Weiran fall ill, during a summer vacation. Because Teacher Lin and Teacher Gu were away teaching in a remote area, only the two of them were home.
At the time, there was thunder and lightning outside the window. Yun Shu was reading in her room. Gu Weiran, in the living room, was startled by a loud clap of thunder, and then her hands and feet began to cramp, and she quickly developed a high fever.
That night, Yun Shu was so scared she didn’t sleep, filled with self-reproach. Lin Yun remotely directed her on what to do, remaining calm and composed. Not only did she not blame Yun Shu for the oversight, but she kept consoling her, saying Weiran was premature, had a weak body, and was easily startled due to her fragility.
Teacher Lin was always like this, forever understanding, broad-minded, and tolerant, which made Yun Shu feel ashamed.
The memory, like a world away, made Yun Shu a little nostalgic for the past. Looking at Gu Weiran now, she had grown into a graceful young woman, even capable of leading a business.
Teacher Lin must be very proud. Weiran grew up to be sensible and excellent.
Yun Shu was also proud, and felt a warmth inside.
She hadn’t expected to feel this way again after Teacher Lin was gone.
Yun Shu repeatedly massaged Gu Weiran’s legs, her hands aching without her noticing. Her phone rang countless times during this, but she didn’t answer.
The Mind Virtue Group was in chaos, and Yun Shu had to be the one to deal with the representative of the Ling Rui Group.
Yun Shu had left the internal meeting today halfway through, simply because her right eyelid kept twitching, and she couldn’t stop worrying about Gu Weiran.
It was a good thing she came, otherwise, with a fever close to forty degrees, the consequences would have been unimaginable.
Gu Weiran’s fever didn’t break, and Yun Shu dared not leave.
Bodyguards and assistants came in turns to call her, but none could make her move.
Ibuprofen takes effect in thirty minutes to an hour. Yun Shu calculated the time, measuring Gu Weiran’s temperature every ten minutes. Forty minutes later, the temperature finally came down.
She sighed a breath of relief, exhausted, and slumped into the chair.
“Knock, knock, knock.” A gentle knock sounded again. “General Manager Yun, the Chairman is back and wants you to return to the company now.”
This time, the messenger changed from the assistant to the bodyguard. Yun Shu gently rubbed her forehead, sighing helplessly.
“Wait a moment.”
She cleaned up the things, went to the restroom to tidy her appearance, turned on the night light, and then quietly left.
Gu Weiran sweated heavily after taking the medicine and woke up when it was dark.
Her condition came and went quickly. Once the fever subsided, the cramping would also go away.
The room was silent, as if no one had ever been there. Gu Weiran looked at the light. She remembered falling asleep during the day. Did the light turn on automatically at night?
She didn’t know how Yun Shu was doing. Bringing her here and then leaving her stranded, really.
Gu Weiran vaguely remembered dreaming of her again, but couldn’t recall the content.
“What a persistent presence!”
She couldn’t help but mutter a complaint and went to the restroom for a hot shower. Just as she came out, room service delivered dinner: various options, both Chinese and Western, including hamburgers, pastries, noodles, and white porridge.
Gu Weiran took a hamburger, nibbling on it as she walked to the balcony, breathing in the fresh night air. She felt completely comfortable.
The Mind Virtue building opposite was brightly lit. Her gaze swept over it, ready to change her perspective to look at the scenery.
Anything to avoid thinking of Yun Shu all the time.
She didn’t care about herself, and Gu Weiran was happy for the peace and quiet; she could even work overtime in tranquility.
Just as she was thinking this, Yun Shu’s call came.
It was truly bizarre. Every time Gu Weiran thought of her, the phone would inexplicably ring.
“Hello~” Gu Weiran’s mouth was full, making her voice muffled.
Yun Shu chuckled, “I ordered so many things for you, and you’re eating a hamburger?”
Gu Weiran was startled, looking around—up, down, left, and right. Could this hotel have surveillance? Otherwise, how would Yun Shu know she was eating a hamburger?
“Stop looking. There’s no surveillance.”
“You, you, you…” Gu Weiran felt a chill run down her spine, a terror of being watched.
Yun Shu’s lighthearted laugh came from the other end of the phone. She said softly, “Weiran, look across the road~”
Gu Weiran looked up. On the floor directly facing her balcony, a person was holding up their phone flashlight and waving at her. Across the road, she clearly saw Yun Shu’s gentle and amiable face.
Mama Yun is killing me!!! Arrogant Gu, you’ve betrayed yourself!
