[Lucky Overpowered] — I Became a Background Character Meant to Die in the Game’s Opening, But Now I’m Overpowered and Fighting to Save My All-Time Favorite Alchemist Heroine - Episode 10
And so, after finishing breakfast, Lise and I headed straight for the dungeon.

“This is… the inside of a dungeon…!”
Lise murmured, placing her hand on the white wall of the dungeon corridor, her voice as delicate and clear as the sound of a bell.
She was wearing her usual patchwork dress, carrying an oversized backpack, and holding a staff that looked more like a tree branch. Yeah—definitely starter gear. Barely any defense at all. Honestly, it’s a little concerning.

“Lise, don’t you think you should’ve bought something sturdier to wear?”
“Geez, Gee. We have to be careful with money. If we’re not cautious, it’ll be gone before we know it.”
“I get that. But to me, you’re more important than money.”
“Well then, I’ll say it too—you matter more to me than money. You’re the one who should get proper armor. You got seriously hurt just yesterday…”

I looked down at her words, only to see my own patchwork clothes, more fitting for a beggar than an adventurer. I guess I don’t really have room to talk about appearances either…
Still, we’re only on the first floor now, but dungeons get more dangerous the deeper you go. Sooner or later, we’ll have to buy gear. Better sooner than later.
But every time I try to buy Lise something, she always insists, “Get gear for yourself first.”

“Alright then, how about this—we wrap things up early today and go shopping for gear together.”
“So, you’ve finally decided to buy armor, huh, Gee? I’ve been wanting you to dress more safely for a while now.”
“I’m not just talking about my gear.”
“Huh?”
“Of course we’re upgrading your equipment too.”
“W-We don’t have that kind of money!”
“Yes, we do. We still have all the winnings from the gambling hall, remember?”
“But that’s supposed to be for emergencies…”
“This is an emergency. If we get proper gear, we can avoid injuries and save on potions. Investing now will save us in the long run.”
“Well, that might be true, but still…”
“It’s decided. Once you get hurt, it’s too late.”
“You’re so pushy, Gee!”

If Lise ever got hurt… I don’t think I could handle it. So even if I have to be a little forceful, I’ll make the call.

“Alright then, let’s go.”
“Ah, wait up!”

And just like that, Lise and I began our dungeon crawl.

“Gee, look… over there.”
Lise whispered, pointing cautiously down the corridor. A Horned Rabbit.

“I see it.”

I quickly reached over my shoulder, pulled an arrow from my quiver, and nocked it to my bow. The Horned Rabbit was already charging toward us—probably drawn by Lise’s voice.
Still, it was more than ten meters away. Plenty of time to take it down—

Wait, what!?
Lise suddenly jumped in front of me, staff raised, blocking my line of fire. What is she doing!?
Now I can’t shoot, and the Horned Rabbit is getting closer. And when it attacks, it’ll go after her first.

“Like hell I’ll let that happen!”
“Ah!”

I grabbed Lise’s shoulder and yanked her backward with all my strength, using the motion to pivot forward and switch places with her.
Then I tossed aside my bow and arrow and drew the dagger from my waist.
The Horned Rabbit was less than three meters away now—but I made it in time.

“Hah!”

As it lunged at me, I struck upward with my right-hand dagger, smashing it into the creature’s belly.
The Horned Rabbit flew back in a wide arc and vanished in a puff of white smoke.
A rabbit pelt—its drop item—fluttered to the ground.

“Whew…”

I let out a sigh of relief and slid both daggers back into their sheaths before turning around.

“Lise, sorry I shoved you. But it’s dangerous—you can’t just jump into my line of fire like that.”
________________________________________
I offered her my hand. She was sitting on the ground, still shaken.
With her head bowed, she muttered softly.

“…Sorry for getting in the way. It’s just… I thought I had to protect you. That’s all I could think about.”
“…Huh?”
________________________________________
Lise… trying to protect me? Isn’t that backwards?
________________________________________
“It’s just… You saved me, Gee. So this time, I thought I should be the one to protect you…”
“…I see.”

She must be talking about how “Gee” protected her from the Soul Eater.
That was the real Gee’s final act—a selfless, heroic sacrifice. Claiming it as my own feels… wrong.
After all, I’m just borrowing Gee’s body. I’m not really him. But to Lise, I am Gee.
Should I tell her the truth? That I’m not the real Gee?
But… this whole situation is a miracle that didn’t even happen in the game.

In the original game’s story, Chapter One ends with Lise defeating the Soul Eater. She realizes she has feelings for Gee—who never returns from the battle—and mourns his loss in tears.
That shows just how important Gee is to her.

One day, I’ll have to tell her.
But… making the one you love cry is never easy.
