- Episode 21 - The Tower of Babel Sixth Floor
The Next Morning
Lise and I were waiting in the central plaza of the city, where the dungeon known as the Tower of Babel stood. Today was the day we would join the “Fangs of the Wolf” for a trial party. If things went well, we’d
officially become members.
If this were a game, Lise would probably be the party leader, recruiting members. But in reality, no one would entrust their life to a girl who had just come of age. It was only natural that we’d be the ones trying to join the party.
The members of the Fangs of the Wolf seemed decent. Honestly, if possible, I’d like to stay with them.
“Ah! They’re here!” Lise exclaimed.
Looking in the direction she pointed, I saw three figures approaching—a red-haired boy with a great sword on his back, a boy carrying a large shield, and a girl holding an ornate staff. They were Gilles, Gustave, and Isabelle.
“Yo, did we keep you waiting?”
“Nah, we just got here too.”
“Alright, shall we get going?”
“Yeah.”
After a quick exchange of greetings, we joined the line of adventurers heading into the Tower of Babel. I was surprised by how many adventurers were here in the city of Barro—there were more than I’d expected.
Lining both sides of the queue were food stalls, clearly aimed at tempting adventurers like us. Adventurers kept stepping out of line to buy snacks, unable to resist. Gustave looked at them longingly until Isabelle jabbed him in the ribs.
The line steadily moved forward, and soon we were inside the tower. In front of a large hourglass-like monument, we all joined hands. Apparently, this allowed us to warp to the same floor together.
“We’re going to the sixth floor, right?”
“Yeah.”
I nodded to Gilles. A moment of floating sensation passed, and the scenery instantly changed—we had arrived on the sixth floor.
Back in the game, I never questioned how it worked, but now that I think about it… how does this kind of teleportation even function?
“Let’s move. As planned, Gee, you’re on scout duty. Good?”
“Got it.”
This time, I was assigned the role of the scout.
The scout is the party’s eyes, moving ahead alone to detect monsters or traps. While I’m not confident in disarming traps yet, I’ve played the game in my previous life to death. I remember every twist and trap in this dungeon like the back of my hand. I should be able to handle it.
“I’m going in.”
“Be careful, okay?”
“Yeah.”
It was a bit sad to leave Lise behind, but this was for her sake too.
I moved quietly, staying on my toes as I advanced through the faintly lit dungeon corridor.
Peeking cautiously around a corner, I spotted three large figures with pink pig heads—Orcs. Their bodies looked soft and saggy, but they definitely seemed strong. Each one held a club, scanning their surroundings vigilantly.
Using the hand signals we’d agreed on yesterday, I quickly relayed the enemy count to the team.
Gilles nodded and unsheathed his great sword.
That was my cue to act. I pulled two arrows from my quiver and nocked one onto my longbow.
Fuu…
Taking a deep breath, I leaned out just enough from the corner and drew my bow.
The Orcs still hadn’t noticed me.
I aimed at the one closest to me and gently released the string.
With a soft thrum, the arrow cut through the air and flew smoothly.
It struck the back of the Orc’s head, and in an instant, the creature vanished into a puff of white smoke.
Two left.
The longbow really was powerful. Maybe the hit was just in the right spot, or maybe my [Luck] stat triggered a critical hit. Either way, I hadn’t expected to drop one with a single shot.
“PIGYA!”
The remaining Orcs, unfazed by their comrade’s death, charged straight at me.
They were five meters away. I wanted to fire another shot, but pushing my luck wasn’t wise. I turned and sprinted back.
“Two Orcs incoming!”
I called out the enemy type and count to my teammates.
“Got it!”
“Roger!”
Gilles and Gustave immediately raised their weapons in response.
I dashed between the two and stopped near Lise and Isabelle. Dropping my bow, I drew the dagger from my waist—time for close combat.
“Haaahhhhhhh!”
As I turned around, Gilles was already charging at one of the Orcs with his great sword.
At the same time, Gustave slammed into the other with a powerful tackle.
I wanted to stand back and observe their skills, but I still had a job to do. Once I confirmed that the Orcs’ attention was fully on Gilles and Gustave, I began to move—stealthily, quietly.
I kept telling myself to stay calm as I hugged the edge of the corridor and crept around to the monsters’ backs.
Getting behind the Orc Gustave was fighting, I took aim at its weak spot and drove my dagger down with precision.
