[Lucky Overpowered] — I Became a Background Character Meant to Die in the Game’s Opening, But Now I’m Overpowered and Fighting to Save My All-Time Favorite Alchemist Heroine - Episode 24
The Next Afternoon
We had come to Clemence’s bookstore.
Not because we had saved enough money for the next recipe book—no, we were here to check on Clemence.
“Do you think she’s okay…?”
“…”
To be honest, I was hoping for an event to trigger soon. Not that I didn’t care about Clémence, of course—I did, in my own way.
“Clémence, are you here?”
“Huh?”
I pushed open the door and peeked into the dimly lit store, but Clémence wasn’t at her usual spot behind the counter. The shop was open… so where did she go?
“Where could she be?”
“No idea… Hm?”
Just then, I noticed something on the floor.
“What’s this… huh?”
It looked like a purple pouch, and it was surprisingly heavy, jingling like it was full of coins. Wait a second—I remembered this.
“Isn’t this the wallet Clémence always carries?”
“Huh? Why would just her wallet be—ah!”
As if something had startled her, Lise suddenly stood on tiptoe and leaned over the counter.
“She’s here! She collapsed!”
“She collapsed?! It’s Clémence?!”
I rushed around the counter and found Clémence lying on the floor, clutching at her chest. Her eyes were tightly shut, and she looked completely unconscious. It was obvious at a glance that this wasn’t something amateurs like us could deal with.
Still, I didn’t panic. If anything, I felt like—finally, the event had begun.
Lise, who I had filled in on the situation yesterday, didn’t lose her cool either.
“We need to help her—fast!”
“Lise, the medicine! The one we prepared this morning!”
“Right!”
While Lise got the medicine ready, I gently lifted Clémence into a sitting position.
“Clémence, can you hear me? Are you conscious?”
I called out loudly. Her eyelids twitched, and then slowly cracked open. But that was all—maybe she was just reacting to the sound, or maybe she was still semi-conscious.
“It’s ready!”
“Okay. Clémence! You hear me? We’re going to give you some medicine now! Lise, what should I do?”
“Just hold her upright. I’ll administer it.”
“Got it.”
Lise inserted a funnel-like tool into Clémence’s mouth and poured in a glowing green liquid. The potion oozed slowly, thick as honey. Maybe Lise had anticipated this and adjusted the formula to make it easier to swallow.
A few minutes passed as she gave Clémence the medicine, and the pained expression on Clémence’s face gradually softened into one of calm.
“Is she okay now?”
“She’s stable for now. But we’ll need to give her more doses over time. For now, let’s take her to the church and have her examined.”
“Right. I’ll carry her.”
Together, Lise and I brought Clémence to the church and knocked on the gate.
The cleric examined her unconscious body and began chanting holy magic. It was a healing spell—meant to restore physical strength, not cure illness. That part was up to medicine and alchemy.
“Hey…”
“Hm?”
We sat on the long bench in the chapel, waiting for Clémence to regain consciousness. Lise, sitting beside me, spoke quietly.
“She really was collapsed, just like you said… You were right.”
“Honestly, I didn’t know for sure until today. It’s kind of uncanny.”
“But… you still knew, didn’t you?”
“…Yeah.”
Of course I did. I’ve played through this game so many times, I remember every event. Clémence’s situation was one of them.
Hearing that, Lise looked down, lost in thought. After a while, she slowly looked up and met my eyes—her crimson gaze completely serious.
“…Okay. I’ll believe you.”
“You sure? I could just be messing with you, you know.”
“Someone who really wants to deceive people wouldn’t say that out loud.”
“…”
True. I had no reason to lie to her. Still, I couldn’t help feeling a little uneasy at how quickly Lise trusted people.
“You should be more careful, you know. Don’t go trusting people so easily.”
“If it were just anyone, I wouldn’t. But you? I believe in you.”
“I-Is that so…”
The way she said it, so directly and sincerely, made me feel a little embarrassed.
“By the way…”
“What is it?”
Lise gave me a slightly troubled, sheepish look.
“What should I call you? You’re not really ‘Gee’ are you?”
“Oh… right.”
Come to think of it, I hadn’t told her my real name yet.
“My name’s Yoshisuke Makino.”
“Yoshisuke… Makino?”
“Makino’s my family name, and Yoshisuke is my given name.”
“Family name? Like a house name? Are you a noble or something?”
“Nope, just an ordinary commoner. You can just call me Yoshisuke, if you’d like.”
“Alright then. Nice to meet you, Yoshisuke!”
“…Yeah.”
“From now on,” huh?
I don’t know what’s going to happen next. But once I’ve helped Gee, I probably won’t have a chance to talk with Lise like this again. Somehow, I just have that feeling.
