[Lucky Overpowered] — I Became a Background Character Meant to Die in the Game’s Opening, But Now I’m Overpowered and Fighting to Save My All-Time Favorite Alchemist Heroine - Episode 28
“Let’s go!”
With Gilles’s spirited shout, the large double doors before us creaked open. The boss battle was finally about to begin.
“UOOOOOOOOOOOOHHH!!”
As the doors opened, Gustave let out a roar, trying to draw the monsters’ attention in the boss chamber.
“Let’s move.”
“Yeah.”
Isabelle and I followed behind Gustave and Gilles into the boss room. It was a circular white arena, like looking at the inside of a giant shortcake. The ceiling arched gently overhead in a dome shape.
In the center stood two larger-than-usual zombies, and two skeleton warriors wielding swords in both hands. Further back, we spotted a skeletal figure holding a wooden staff — a Skeleton Mage.
These five monsters were the floor bosses of the tenth level.
The moment I saw the Skeleton Mage, I reached over my shoulder, pulled an arrow from my quiver, and nocked it onto my bow.
By then, the Skeleton Mage had already raised its staff, preparing to cast a spell.
I urged myself to stay calm and drew the bowstring. My target: the Skeleton Mage.
I had only one shot. If I missed, the mage would unleash its magic — and that could very well kill Gustave, who still wasn’t fully equipped.
In other words, Gustave’s life depended on this arrow.
I absolutely can’t miss!
I held my breath and loosed the arrow.
A boing resonated — the familiar sound of the bowstring’s release.
The arrow flew straight, slicing through the air before sinking into the left eye socket of the Skeleton Mage with a sharp clack.
The impact jolted the mage backward, and its chanting came to an abrupt halt.
Isabelle didn’t miss the opening.
“Fireball!”
A blazing fireball appeared before her and launched forward at high speed.
It zipped past the zombies and skeleton warriors, hitting the Skeleton Mage squarely.
The impact sent it flying as it went up in flames, and after flaring brightly, it turned into a puff of white smoke and vanished.
We’d taken down the most dangerous threat — the Skeleton Mage.
But there were still four monsters left. I had to stay sharp.
Tossing aside my bow, I gripped my dagger and charged toward the front lines.
“RAAAAAHHHHH!!”
At the front, Gilles had just cleaved a zombie in two with her great sword.
Three left.
“Fireball!”
Another fireball shot from behind and took out one of the skeleton warriors.
Two left.
“HRAAAAH!”
Gustave, engaged with both a zombie and a skeleton warrior, bashed the zombie away with his shield. The creature flew in the direction where Gilles stood waiting, her great sword ready.
“HRAAAAHHHHH!”
Gilles brought the blade down, and the zombie vanished in a puff of smoke.
One left.
I watched Gustave and the remaining skeleton warrior clash, then quietly circled behind the enemy.
The skeleton warrior was a moving skeleton, like an animated anatomical model. Normally, I’d go for a vital spot with the dagger… but did skeletons even have vital points?
Well, guess I’ll go for the neck.
“Hah!”
With a dry crack, I stabbed my dagger into the back of the skeleton warrior’s neck.
The blade slid perfectly between the vertebrae. I twisted it, and with a light snap, the skull popped off. The body dissolved into white smoke.
That was the last of them.
“Phew… Good work, everyone. Any injuries? I’ve got some of the potions Lise made if you need them.”
“I’m fine!”
“Same here, all good.”
“Nice job, everyone. You must be tired, but let’s collect the loot and get out of here.”
“Hey, look! A treasure chest!”
Gilles pointed to the center of the room, where a large wooden chest had appeared. When had that gotten there? Probably the reward for clearing the floor boss.
None of us had to say anything — we naturally gravitated toward the chest.
“Alright… I’m opening it!”
Someone audibly gulped. It might’ve been me.
There were never any traps on boss reward chests — I knew that, so I opened it without hesitation.
A flash of light spilled from inside. All it contained was a single small, worn cloth pouch.
“What the heck is this?”
“Wait, could it be…?”
Gilles and Gustave sounded underwhelmed behind me.
Ignoring them, I carefully picked up the pouch. I had a hunch — and checking inside confirmed it: a small wooden fragment.
“No doubt about it. It’s a Soul Incense.”
The odds of finding Revenant Incense in a chest were low. To get it on the first try — now that was lucky. Maybe my Gift of Luck had come through for us.
