- Chapter 2 - Sister, Take Me Home
Lin Ruoyun raised her flashlight, finally getting a clear look at the Alpha’s face. She had thick, dark eyelashes, a high nose bridge, and prominent, elegant features. Her bone structure was excellent. It was a classic “dramatic beauty” look with a powerful visual impact.
Her appearance reminded Lin Ruoyun of the Republican-era drama she had filmed just a few hours ago—specifically, the glamorous and formidable owner of a dance hall described in the script.
But, was it her imagination? Lin Ruoyun felt that the Alpha’s cold, indifferent eyes seemed to shimmer with tears when they looked at her.
“What’s your name? Why are you out so late?”
The Alpha didn’t answer. She just stared at Lin Ruoyun, the mist in her eyes growing thicker until it was on the verge of spilling over.
A sudden, unexplainable pang of sadness welled up in Lin Ruoyun. After composing herself, she asked gently, “Can’t you tell me? Do you have a family member’s phone number? I can help you contact them. Even if you’re an Alpha, it’s dangerous to be out alone this late.”
The Alpha slowly walked closer, her expression turning bewildered. She nudged herself against Lin Ruoyun. “Sister…”
Lin Ruoyun didn’t like physical contact with people, especially not with an Alpha. But the Alpha looked so purely innocent and harmless, so pitiable. Lin Ruoyun hesitated but ultimately didn’t push her away.
“Tell me, where do you live and what’s your name?” she asked. “Okay?”
“I… I don’t remember,” the Alpha said with a vacant smile, gently shaking Lin Ruoyun’s arm. “Sister… I’m so hungry…”
Lin Ruoyun finally realized that the Alpha in front of her seemed to have some cognitive issues. No matter what she asked, she only got a confused response like, “Sister, hungry, need food.”
It seemed she had a mental disability. However, the shirt she was wearing was a custom-made vintage piece from C-house, and it was far from cheap. Could she be a wealthy young lady who was persecuted, lost her memory, and ended up in this state?
Lin Ruoyun was taken aback by her own wild imagination. She steadied herself and decided to call the police and let them handle it.
Less than ten minutes later, a police car drove into the complex. Two female officers got out. The shorter officer looked the Alpha over, asked her a few simple questions, and then returned to the taller officer with a look of helplessness. “Captain Guan, this Alpha… seems to have a problem up here,” the short officer said, pointing a finger at her own head.
The taller officer, Captain Guan, gave her a sidelong glance and crouched down to check the Alpha’s belongings.
However, the Alpha seemed to strongly resist anyone but Lin Ruoyun touching her. She warily stepped back, hiding behind Lin Ruoyun and tugging at her shirt, looking at her with a pitiful expression.
Lin Ruoyun gently soothed her. “Don’t be afraid. The police officer is just trying to help you.”
The Alpha shook her head, her eyes still watery.
Lin Ruoyun sighed and looked at Captain Guan. “Let me try.” She turned and placed her hand on the Alpha’s shoulder, her fingers sliding under the fabric of her clothes like a winding snake. A tingling, warm sensation spread through her skin. Lin Ruoyun’s eyes were downcast, so she didn’t see the sudden blush that spread across the Alpha’s cheeks.
“There’s nothing in her pockets,” Lin Ruoyun said, looking up and shaking her head at Captain Guan.
Captain Guan cleared her throat. “It looks like we’ll have to take her back to the station for registration and to check if she’s been reported missing.”
The Alpha seemed to understand that they were going to take her away. She looked at Lin Ruoyun helplessly. However, Lin Ruoyun showed no intention of going with them. The Alpha’s shoulders slumped, and her eyelashes cast a soft shadow over her face.
Seeing Lin Ruoyun about to leave, Captain Guan quickly called out to her. “I’m sorry, but could I trouble you to come to the station and give a statement?”
Lin Ruoyun hesitated, then glanced at the Alpha’s reddened eyes. She nodded and got into the police car with them.
At the station, Captain Guan immediately checked the internal system for recent missing persons. They found no photos of the Alpha and no records of her in the household registration system.Â
Captain Guan then pulled up the surveillance footage from around Lin Ruoyun’s complex, but the cameras in the old, demolished housing area were broken. There was no way to find out why the Alpha was in her building’s stairwell.
Frustrated, Captain Guan scratched her head. “She can’t even say her own name or address. We can’t match her fingerprints or photos in the system. This is a very difficult situation.”
Captain Guan stood up, facing Lin Ruoyun, and sighed heavily. “It looks like we’ll have to send her to an Alpha shelter.”
When the Alpha heard “shelter,” she curled her fingers, hooking them into Lin Ruoyun’s clothes, her voice filled with anxiety. “Sister, I… I don’t want to go… I want to go home with you.”
Captain Guan seized the opportunity. “Uh… Miss, she only seems to trust you. Could you take her in for one night? We’ll come pick her up for the shelter tomorrow morning.”
Lin Ruoyun was not the type to meddle in other people’s affairs, and she felt a bit annoyed at being manipulated. Besides, she had been taught in her elementary school health class that Omegas and Alphas were different, and an Omega should never be in the same room with an unfamiliar Alpha, as it could become dangerous during a heat cycle.
“I’m sorry, but I don’t think I can help.” Lin Ruoyun forced herself to look away from the Alpha’s pale, lonely back and walked directly toward the door.
“Hey, you…” Captain Guan took a hurried step to catch up. The next moment, her wrist was seized. Captain Guan turned in surprise, her gaze slowly traveling from the hand on her wrist to the Alpha’s crimson eyes. A strange look of recognition crossed her face.
Captain Guan went back to the Alpha’s side, leaning in to whisper, “Cousin… is she really your sister-in-law? But it seems like she doesn’t recognize you?”
The Alpha quietly watched Lin Ruoyun leave. Long after her figure had disappeared around the corner, she slowly placed her hand over her heart and clutched it tightly. “She is Ruoyun… She is Ruoyun…”
As soon as the Alpha finished speaking, the short female officer next to her froze in place. “C-C-Captain… What are you two talking about?” The short officer stared at the Alpha’s eyes, noticing that the vacant, foolish look had completely vanished, replaced by a cold, profound intensity.
“Captain, did you say she… she’s your cousin?” The short officer finally caught on, her fingertips trembling as she pointed at the Alpha, her face filled with dread. “Then… she’s the second miss of the Runhai Group?”
My god, this was the legendary Guan family’s second daughter—Guan Yinghan! The one rumored to be ruthless and cold, who would stop at nothing to gain control of the Runhai Group, even eliminating her own family.
Thinking about how she had just openly mocked the second Miss Guan as an idiot, the short officer felt a chill run down her spine and instinctively hid behind Captain Guan.
Captain Guan gave her a reassuring smile and patted her shoulder. “Xiao Yuan, there’s nothing more here for you. You should go home and rest early.”
“Okay!” she said, and bolted out the door like a scared rabbit.
After the short officer left, Captain Guan glanced at her cousin’s face and hesitated before speaking. “Sis, could you have made a mistake?”
Guan Muwei had entered the criminal investigation department after graduating from the police academy, and she was an expert at reading people’s expressions. She had been carefully observing Lin Ruoyun’s face during their conversation.Â
She was certain that Lin Ruoyun wasn’t faking it; she truly didn’t recognize her cousin.
“No, I couldn’t have. She is Ruoyun,” Guan Yinghan said, opening a pocket watch she kept close to her and handing it to Guan Muwei. A photo the size of a bottle cap clearly showed the two of them together.Â
In the picture, Lin Ruoyun wore a butter-yellow dress, leaning sweetly against Guan Yinghan’s shoulder, her eyes crinkled and her lips curved into a smile.
Guan Yinghan’s voice was heavy, and her eyes were a little watery. “Assistant Fei looked for her for five years. When he gave me this photo, I was sure she was Ruoyun.”
“Last week at the supermarket on Tianshan Road, I deliberately bumped into Ruoyun’s cart, but she didn’t recognize me. The day before yesterday, I ran into her again in the plaza below her apartment, but Ruoyun… still didn’t recognize me.”
Guan Yinghan slowly turned her head, her voice strained and hoarse. “Xiao Wei, do you think Ruoyun is mad at me? Mad that it took me so long to find her?”
Guan Muwei had never seen her cousin look so helpless and vulnerable before, and her heart ached. “Cousin, how could you be blamed? You’re not Auntie’s biological daughter. She saw you as a thorn in her side and tried to hurt you so many times. It’s a good thing you were so alert, or you would have been gone by now.”
Guan Muwei continued to console her. “Your position in the Guan family isn’t stable, and your sister-in-law is your only weakness. If Auntie knew she existed, she would use her to threaten you and harm her. So, you shouldn’t blame yourself, Cousin.”
Outsiders only knew Guan Yinghan as a difficult and ruthless person, but they didn’t know how she had to walk on thin ice and scheme her way through the treacherous Guan family to become the head of the company. Her experiences were unimaginable to others.
While talking to Lin Ruoyun, Guan Muwei had discreetly pulled out a strand of her hair. She unfolded the hair strand in her palm and held it out to Guan Yinghan. “Cousin, stop overthinking things. Let’s wait for the DNA results.”
In truth, Guan Muwei already had a faint idea of the answer, but she didn’t dare tell Guan Yinghan. If the DNA test came back positive, there was only one possibility—Lin Ruoyun had lost her memory.Â
For five years, Lin Ruoyun had been missing, and Guan Yinghan had searched for her like a madwoman. Now that she was finally found, she had become a stranger with no memory. Guan Muwei couldn’t be sure that her cousin wouldn’t completely break down from this news.
