- Chapter 21 - Keeping Our Distance
Lin Ruoyun had passed out last night and only woke up as dawn broke outside the window.
She opened her eyes, confused for a moment, unable to tell where she was. She rested for a bit, then struggled to sit up, raising her hand to block the bright light from the window.
The rustling sound of Ruoyun getting up woke Guan Yinghan, who was leaning against the door. She quickly rushed over, expertly curving her lips into the pure, innocent smile that only Lin Ruoyun, whom she calls “Nai Tang” (milk candy), would recognize.
“Jiejie… you’re awake?”
Lin Ruoyun’s mind slowly cleared, and she remembered what had happened before she fainted. She instinctively grabbed a pillow and threw it at Guan Yinghan. “You… don’t come near me.”
Guan Yinghan knelt by the side of the bed, looking up at her with watery eyes. “Jiejie… I’m sorry…”
Lin Ruoyun’s forehead twitched. She frantically touched the back of her neck. Her scent gland was smooth and clean, with no signs of having been marked.
She then lifted the blanket and held her breath, glancing down. Her underwear was neatly in place, with no suspicious signs or discomfort.
She pushed herself back, putting a little distance between herself and Nai Tang.
Guan Yinghan sensitively noticed the change in Lin Ruoyun’s attitude. She anxiously grabbed Lin Ruoyun’s shoulders, trembling as she moved closer, her eyelids lowered and flushed with embarrassment. “Jiejie… I’m sorry… Last night you were holding me, and I don’t know why I suddenly got so hot and uncomfortable… Jiejie… do you not like me anymore?”
Lin Ruoyun’s face turned pale.
She remembered everything from last night clearly. It was she who had pulled Nai Tang close, wanting to practice an intimate scene with her.
Although Nai Tang had the mind of a child, her body was that of a mature Alpha.
It was Lin Ruoyun’s fault for not keeping her distance, for provoking Nai Tang and triggering her heat cycle.
What did Nai Tang know? She was still a child.
Besides, during the heat cycle, pheromones are easily thrown into chaos. When an Omega gets close to an Alpha in that state, they’re like a walking aphrodisiac. It was completely understandable that Nai Tang couldn’t control herself.
Lin Ruoyun bit her bottom lip and slowly moved forward with her hands. She got close to Guan Yinghan and met her pure, innocent eyes. She hesitated before speaking, “Nai Tang… can you… can you forget about what happened last night?”
As soon as the words left her mouth, Lin Ruoyun froze, horrified by what she had just said.
What a terrible thing for a person to say!
Lin Ruoyun wanted to fix her mistake, but Guan Yinghan’s eyes were already turning red. She blinked, looking at Lin Ruoyun in disbelief.
Lin Ruoyun didn’t have the courage to meet her gaze and looked away, feeling like she was being pricked with needles. She stammered out an explanation, “Nai Tang… I should be the one saying sorry. I didn’t guide you properly. This is my first time taking care of a kid your age, so I don’t have experience. From now on… let’s keep some distance, okay?”
Guan Yinghan understood.
Ruoyun didn’t like her; she only took her in out of pity.
Lin Ruoyun watched the light in Guan Yinghan’s eyes dim little by little, and her heart ached for some reason. But while she could compromise on other things, this was an exception.
She couldn’t allow Nai Tang to develop inappropriate desires for her.
That would be irresponsible to herself and even more irresponsible to Nai Tang.
She turned her face back to look at Guan Yinghan. “Nai Tang, once you get your memory back, you can live a normal life. You’ll find an Omega you like and live together with her.”
Guan Yinghan’s heart felt as if it had been stabbed by a dull blade. The pain made her fingers curl up unconsciously.
Ruoyun, you’re the one who has amnesia!
You’re the one who forgot me, who forgot that the Omega I love is you!
I promised Grandpa I would return to the Guan family and fight my way through a sea of trouble, all to become strong enough to be worthy of you.
But you forgot me. What was the point of it all?
Guan Yinghan looked up dispiritedly and saw the mist in Lin Ruoyun’s eyes.
In the end, she still couldn’t stand seeing Ruoyun sad.
Guan Yinghan blinked and made her voice sound light and relaxed. “Okay, I will stay farther away from Jiejie from now on.”
Lin Ruoyun breathed a sigh of relief. But it wasn’t a feeling of happiness or freedom; it was an indescribable sense of loss, as if a part of her heart had been dug out.
Whether she admitted it or not, the feeling she got when acting with Nai Tang was completely different from when she acted with the male supporting actor.
Although both made her feel flustered, her fluster around the male actor came from a deep-seated fear, while her fluster around Nai Tang was strangely mixed with a hint of desire.
But she refused to acknowledge it and even secretly felt relieved.
Thank goodness Nai Tang’s heat cycle was triggered by my actions. If she had developed a spontaneous physical reaction to me, I truly would have had no way out.
…
Lin Ruoyun arrived at the set early. While she was waiting for makeup, Jiang Hui walked over and handed her a few pages of script. “Ruoyun, there are some changes to the scene between Sang Rou and the Warlord. Here’s the new script. Go memorize your lines.”
Lin Ruoyun took the script and quickly skimmed through it. Her smile slowly froze. “Senior, why… did they delete Sang Rou’s intimate scene with the Warlord?”
Reading further, Lin Ruoyun gasped in shock. “Ah… no… they just deleted the Warlord character entirely?”
Jiang Hui went back to her seat and waved to her assistant. “That’s just how old Lin is. When his creative juices get flowing, he can change the script eighteen times a day. You’ll get used to it.”
As Jiang Hui was speaking, a tall figure walked into the makeup room. He stood at the door, looking intently at Lin Ruoyun. His lips were pursed, and he walked carefully toward her, like a child who had done something wrong.
When he reached Lin Ruoyun, Guan Yinghan was still staring at her. It was as if a heavy light was overflowing from her dark eyes.
Neither of them spoke. Jiang Hui, wearing a confused expression, looked between them a few times and finally figured out what was going on.
Oh!
So they’re having a disagreement.
I knew it. Guan Er had Old Lin change the script overnight because she still didn’t want Lin Ruoyun to do an intimate scene with anyone else.
Sigh!
Poor Ruoyun. With such a jealous Alpha, how will she ever get by?
But a second later, she turned back and saw Guan Yinghan placing a warmed cup of milk in Lin Ruoyun’s hands. She whispered in a humble and helpless voice, “Jiejie… you didn’t eat breakfast. You’ll be hungry.”
Lin Ruoyun deliberately didn’t look at her, her tone full of forced distance. “Nai Tang, I’ve already talked to the props master this morning. You’ll follow her from now on and learn from her. As for the assistant’s work, Ji Wan will take over for you. She’s an Omega, so it’s more convenient for her to do things.”
As soon as she said this, Jiang Hui, who had been burying her face like an ostrich the whole time, was so surprised that her eyes trembled.
It looks like this is more than just a simple disagreement. Lin Ruoyun is trying to cut ties with Guan Er?
Guan Er is going to go crazy, isn’t she?
Sure enough, Guan Yinghan was stunned by her words for a moment. Then she lowered her long eyelashes, and her dark eyes began to well up with tears. Her voice became choked. “Jiejie… you don’t want me anymore? Are you chasing me away?”
Lin Ruoyun looked up at her, a flash of water in her eyes. “No, I just want you to learn more things. You can’t stay by my side forever, can you?”
“Okay.” Guan Yinghan didn’t say anything else. She silently curled her fingers, turned around, and walked out. Her figure became darker and darker at the doorway until she was just a blurry, gray silhouette.
Lin Ruoyun’s heart felt like it was being tossed and fried in a hot wok. She turned her face away, forcefully suppressing her turbulent emotions, and continued to read the script in her hand.
“What happened?” Jiang Hui placed her hand over the script. “If you don’t want your little Alpha to leave, why are you pushing her away? Look at you, you’re about to cry.”
Lin Ruoyun sniffled and let down the hair she had tucked behind her ear to cover her face. “Senior, you’re mistaken. I’m not crying.”
Jiang Hui gave her a look and pointed at the wet marks on the script. “You’re not crying? Then what are these?”
“It’s… it’s… the script is just too moving.” Lin Ruoyun stood up in a panic, avoiding Jiang Hui’s probing gaze. “Senior, I’m going to go look for my assistant. We’re about to start filming, and I don’t know where she went.”
