- Chapter 22 - Keeping a Distance
Instead of finding the props master, Guan Yinghan knelt in the most secluded corner of the film studio. She opened her treasured pocket watch, her fingers tracing the gentle features of the girl in the photograph.
The accumulated mist in her eyes blurred her vision. Guan Yinghan couldn’t stop thinking about the night Ruoyun went into heat.
Afterward, Lin Ruoyun held her tightly and whispered, “Guan Guan, I was lying before, lying when I said… I didn’t have any inhibitors. The truth is… I wanted you to mark me.”
Lin Ruoyun leaned against her, her face flushed. “You’ll be going back to the Guan family in a few days, and I know you’ll miss me… so… I wanted you to mark me… so you wouldn’t have to worry about another Alpha stealing me.”
An Omega’s sweet scent could be addictive. Once Guan Yinghan had a taste of it, she couldn’t resist. The feeling of being cared for and cherished was so warm, she didn’t want to go back to her lonely, cold world.
She craved Ruoyun’s love. She wanted to lock her in her own world and see her first thing every morning.
But…
One unexpected heat cycle had made Ruoyun start to dislike and distance herself from her.
Guan Yinghan bit her lip hard, forcing back her tears. She tasted her own bitter, astringent bl00d.
The sound of high heels clacking on the stone path made Guan Yinghan look up in surprise. She dropped her gaze in disappointment when she saw who it was.
Ji Wan looked down at her feet, and saw Guan Yinghan’s face was as dark as a wok bottom. She cautiously moved closer. “Second Miss… I… I don’t know why Miss Lin suddenly asked me to be her assistant… I swear, I wouldn’t have dared to do it on my own.”
“I know,” Guan Yinghan cut off her stammering explanation and closed her eyes. “This is good. You can be by Ruoyun’s side at all times and protect her closely.”
Ji Wan was surprised that Guan Yinghan wasn’t angry and excitedly started talking. “Second Miss, all the items you gave me, including the food, have been tested by Dr. He. None of them contain any ingredients that inhibit freesia pheromones.”
Hearing the phrase “inhibit freesia pheromones,” a shadow passed over Guan Yinghan’s eyes. “Investigate every person Ruoyun has been in contact with, one by one. And test everything she’s touched. You have two months. If you can’t find anything by then, you’ll go back to Grandpa, and I’ll have Assistant Fei come over instead.”
Ji Wan nodded obediently. “Understood, Second Miss.”
…
Lin Ruoyun walked out of the makeup room in a gloomy mood, dragging her feet aimlessly along the film studio wall. Her mind was filled with the two choked-up sentences Guan Yinghan had said.
“Jiejie… you don’t want me anymore? Are you chasing me away?”
Lin Ruoyun’s heart felt heavy and uncomfortable. She sat down in a secluded corner and buried her face in her arms.
As luck would have it, her new assistant, Ji Wan, rushed past her carrying a costume. Lin Ruoyun was about to call out to her, but she was going too fast to notice anyone in the corner.
Lin Ruoyun’s eyes involuntarily followed Ji Wan. She saw her stop in front of Guan Yinghan and shove a carton of milk and a sandwich into her hands.
“You’ve only been thinking about Miss Lin, you must not have had breakfast again. Here! Eat up.”
Lin Ruoyun’s back stiffened. From ten meters away, she watched the two of them intently.
Her little Nai Tang might have a child-like mind, but her looks were one in a million. Every single one of her features was a hundred times more beautiful than other Alphas.
She was very attractive.
Every time she sat in the lounge area, the sweet and lovely Omegas from the crew would gather around to play with her.
It seemed like Nai Tang… never paid any attention to them.
But… she seemed to be different with Ji Wan than with the other Omegas.
This might be a good opportunity.
If Nai Tang interacted with Omegas her age more and learned how to get along with them, she might meet someone she truly liked.
While Ji Wan wasn’t as gentle and soft as other Omegas, she was lively and bright, and her looks were very striking among the actors.
An Alpha should be interested in such a cute Omega, right?
Yeah, they should be.
Lin Ruoyun convinced herself with this reasoning, then adjusted her expression and waved at Ji Wan. “Xiao Wan, so you were here. I’ve been looking for you for a long time.”
Guan Yinghan lifted her eyes. The moment she saw Lin Ruoyun, the corner of her lips curved up uncontrollably.
Ji Wan rushed over to her, scratching her head awkwardly. “Sister Yun, you were looking for me? Did the director say we’re starting to work?”
Lin Ruoyun’s gaze went past Ji Wan and looked behind her for a second before quickly looking away. “No, Senior Jiang has all the scenes this morning. I don’t film until the afternoon.”
Alphas have a natural admiration for beautiful Omegas. Ji Wan didn’t control herself and looked at Lin Ruoyun a little too long. “Sister Yun… then I’ll go and prepare for you.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Ji Wan felt a cold breeze on the back of her neck. She shivered for no reason and looked back warily. She didn’t see anything unusual with Second Miss, but still—
It felt like someone was stabbing her with an icy stare.
Wuwuwu… will I live to see the end of this story?
Just as Ji Wan was about to run away, Lin Ruoyun held her still by her shoulder. “No need. There’s nothing to prepare. You stay here and keep Nai Tang company. I’ll just…”
Lin Ruoyun unintentionally looked up and met Guan Yinghan’s dark, shadowed eyes. She paused.
There it is again!
Every time Nai Tang showed that look of being abandoned by the world, Lin Ruoyun’s heart felt like it was being squeezed, a heavy, suffocating pain.
Before, she could tell herself that Nai Tang was just a child and that even the most intimate closeness was not about a desire between an Alpha and an Omega.
But after last night—
She realized that Nai Tang was a physically mature Alpha. She had a primal reaction to her pheromones.
If she didn’t stop this now, Nai Tang would become addicted. With her child-like mind, she had no self-control. Both of them would fall into a deep abyss and never return to their pure, simple relationship.
But what was Nai Tang’s fault?
She trusted her without any hesitation and gave her all her sincerity. Even when she went into an accidental heat, Nai Tang didn’t harm her.
Lin Ruoyun was the one who messed everything up.
But she had to be firm.
Lin Ruoyun bit her lip, awkwardly turning around and only showing her back.
“Sister Yun, don’t go,” Ji Wan said, not knowing whether to leave or stay. She was so anxious that she started sweating. “How about I go and prepare your costumes and props?”
Lin Ruoyun waved her hand, her voice drifting back faintly. “I don’t need you there. You stay here with Nai Tang.”
Guan Yinghan stood there in a daze until a cold wind blew the hair away from her forehead, brushing against her lips.
The wind on her cheek was icy cold.
Guan Yinghan raised her hand to brush it away, feeling a wetness that hadn’t had time to dry.
…
Ji Wan had never seen Second Miss like this. Her face was silently streaming with tears that ran down her chin, dripped onto her neck, and rolled into her collar.
She remembered the most intense fight between the Second Miss and the First Madam. She had been on a business trip to M City when the First Madam had hired a killer to assassinate her. The stab wound went from her armpit all the way to her abdomen.
The medical facilities in M City were poor. Second Miss was pushed into surgery after only a simple disinfection and anesthesia.
Ji Wan thought she wouldn’t make it, but Guan Yinghan didn’t even make a sound.
But now, because of two sentences from Lin Ruoyun, Second Miss was showing a look of sadness and despair that Ji Wan had never seen in her life.
Ji Wan moved back half a step and followed her uneasily. When they got to the sound stage, Guan Yinghan looked around with her peripheral vision and, seeing no sign of Ruoyun, dropped her gaze in disappointment.
Ji Wan observed her master’s expression, taking in her frustration completely. She whispered a small comfort. “Second Miss, don’t be discouraged. As long as we find the drug that inhibits freesia pheromones and stop Miss Lin from taking it, I believe she’ll remember you soon.”
Guan Yinghan turned around and lifted her eyelids coldly, giving her a look that said, “You’re getting too involved.”
Ji Wan quickly masked her panic with a smile, but then she heard Guan Yinghan say, “Why are you following me? Didn’t I tell you to go and protect Ruoyun? If she’s in danger, I’ll hold you responsible.”
Ji Wan was about to say that there was no danger in a film studio in broad daylight when she heard the clattering sound of metal.
Ji Wan had received professional training since childhood, and her hearing was more sensitive than a normal Alpha’s. She subconsciously looked up and saw that the screws of the wire rig that the props team had just set up were all coming loose, and the cable was plummeting straight down.
The falling angle was perfect and aimed directly at Guan Yinghan.
The two cables weighed at least forty or fifty kilograms. With the impact from the fall, getting hit would either kill her or leave her disabled.
Ji Wan’s heart was in her throat. Before her brain could react, her body had already taken action.
She leaped forward in a second, using her left hand to protect Guan Yinghan’s head and her right arm to pull her waist. She rolled with her, tumbling several times before they came to a stop.
Ji Wan pushed herself up and immediately checked on Guan Yinghan. “Second Miss, are you okay?”
Guan Yinghan stood up and brushed the dust off her clothes. Her expression hadn’t changed at all, as if the dangerous moment she had just faced was nothing.
However, the young male Omega who was in charge of the ropes was pale with fright. He crawled over, apologizing repeatedly. “I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry. Were you hurt?”
Guan Yinghan shook her head. Her gaze swept over the young male Omega’s hand, and her calm face suddenly changed color…
Ji Wan noticed the change and followed her gaze. Her eyes stopped.
A second later, she grabbed the rope from the young male Omega’s hand and examined it closely. Then she looked up and met Guan Yinghan’s eyes.
With just one look, they both understood what the other was thinking.
This wasn’t an accident!
Looking at the cut on the rope, it was clearly caused by a deliberate cut.
Having been harassed by the First Madam of the Guan family for years, Guan Yinghan and Ji Wan were always highly vigilant in the face of danger.
Ji Wan asked the young male Omega calmly, “Who was supposed to be filming with the wire today?”
The young male Omega still seemed very shaken. “It was Sister Jiang Hui. She had a fighting scene that needed a wire.”
He patted his chest with lingering fear. “Luckily, Sister Hui went to the hospital for her mother’s checkup this morning. Otherwise, the consequences… I don’t even want to think about it.”
It was obvious that this accident was meant for Jiang Hui, but the other party didn’t know that Jiang Hui’s schedule had changed at the last minute.
Since Jiang Hui wasn’t here, then her scene…
Guan Yinghan’s entire body went tense. A strange feeling of dread shot up from the soles of her feet to her head.
She urgently asked, “Whose scene are they filming now?”
“The director said they’re filming the second female lead, Sang Rou’s,” the young male Omega said, pointing in the direction of the third floor. He then looked up and his eyes widened. “Sister Yun has already gone to the wardrobe to change costumes.”
It wasn’t a big deal to look up, but when he did, the young male Omega was terrified. “Oh my god, why is there fire in the makeup room?”
Guan Yinghan looked up, and her face went deathly pale. At that moment, she almost forgot how to breathe. All she could see in her eyes was a blazing ball of fire.
