Meng Po Gave Her a Bowl of Soup (GL) - Chapter 3
On the last day, knowing Mingyu was coming back, Wanyue was restless. She simply dragged Zhang Hui to the wedding dress shop.
Poor Zhang Hui, who was already exhausted from work, found her limited rest time was being bombarded with yet another dose of dog food from her friend.
When she drove to find Wanyue, she noticed a visible change in her. The once lifeless figure had transformed into a radiant swan, shining brightly.
Since Mingyu left on the first day, Wanyue had been unable to sleep well, constantly missing her. Knowing Mingyu was busy, she didn’t want to disturb her, so she quietly absorbed her emotions in the dark of night.
In the meantime, Zhang Hui was both frustrated and heartbroken seeing Wanyue’s dark circles. Was “lovesickness” really a thing in this era?
Now, however, the Wanyue in front of her was as radiant as jade, with her hair up, exposing her long neck. She wore a creamy white fitted sweater that gently outlined her graceful curves. As she turned, her expressive eyes smiled at Zhang Hui, and the morning light highlighted her like a dewy white rose, enchanting and captivating.
Zhang Hui was moved, her amazement blooming like flowers in her eyes.
“She’s coming back this afternoon.”
Wanyue’s tone was cheerful and excited, her lips enticingly red: “I originally wanted to keep it a secret from everyone, but I thought about it and decided I need your help, Xiao Hui, to see if it looks good.”
Zhang Hui stared at her face: “See what?”
Wanyue walked over with a smile, “The wedding dress.”
Zhang Hui: “…”
Damn.
She knew something like this would happen as soon as she was called early in the morning.
On the way, Zhang Hui, who hadn’t had breakfast, specifically bought some fried dough sticks and soy milk. She looked at Wanyue in the passenger seat, whose eyes were almost sparkling with joy, and asked, “Do you want some?”
Wanyue, who, like her, loved spicy food and had a figure that didn’t gain weight easily, refused: “No, Mingyu doesn’t like me eating it.”
Zhang Hui: “…”
After a moment of silence, Zhang Hui grit her teeth and said, “Eat it. I won’t tell her.”
Wanyue, however, was resolute, “No, Mingyu will smell it.”
“It won’t be a problem. There’s plenty of time, and I have mouthwash.”
“Even then, she’ll still smell it…”
Wanyue’s cheeks flushed slightly. They had a candlelight dinner the previous night, and Mingyu would definitely kiss her… They would also… also…
Zhang Hui could visibly see Wanyue’s face turning redder. Originally pale, it now looked like a peach blossom dyed in light pink, vividly blooming.
“Damn it, Wanyue, enough already! Isn’t it enough to tease us single dogs?”
Seeing her friend’s outburst, Wanyue restrained herself, biting her lip, “I’ll try my best.”
••••
This really is a case of drought killing the crops and floods drowning them.
Zhang Hui turned her anger into appetite, quickly finishing the soy milk and fried dough sticks, but she was still fuming: “I just don’t understand. How can you be so enduring? You’ve been together for 10 years, known each other for over a decade, and you’ve only had that one person since childhood. Aren’t you bored?”
Wanyue opened a small window, feeling the moist, fragrant air, and smiled, squinting her eyes: “Not bored.” She casually took Zhang Hui’s hand and placed it in front of her.
Zhang Hui was taken aback and incredulously asked, “Are you really so heartless as to make me feel your secondary development under your care?”
Song Wanyue: “…”
After a moment of silence, Song Wanyue looked at Zhang Hui with her dark eyes: “Do you feel it? My heartbeat.”
Her heartbeat, which was pounding fiercely because her Mingyu was coming back, was expressing the excitement of their imminent meeting with every beat.
Zhang Hui: “…”
It was truly a morning of defeat.
Being force-fed dog food all the way wasn’t bad enough; when they arrived at the wedding dress shop, Zhang Hui was further stimulated.
The shop owner personally came to greet Wanyue, her tone familiar: “Miss Song, you’re here.”
Zhang Hui looked at Wanyue, who was smiling at the shop owner, “Yes, I’m here.”
The shop owner was a gentle person. She smiled and looked at Wanyue: “Do you still need to try on dresses this time?”
In the past 6 months, Song Wanyue had often visited their wedding dress shop to try on dresses.
She had tried on almost every style and color.
If this were anyone else, the shop owner might have been impatient, but Wanyue’s looks and figure were outstanding. Every time she tried on a wedding dress, any brides-to-be present were amazed. The owner even extended an olive branch, hoping she would become a model, but Wanyue always declined with a smile.
She wore wedding dresses only for Mingyu.
With Mingyu being so possessive and jealous, she wouldn’t agree to let her be a model.
Song Wanyue shook her head, her lips involuntarily curling up, and her tone was soft: “This time, I’m taking it home.”
After 10 years.
She had finally waited for this moment.
This was Zhang Hui’s first time seeing Wanyue in a wedding dress.
She had attended many weddings before and seen many brides. Some say that a woman is most beautiful when she is in a wedding dress.
She never agreed with that before.
But now, when Song Wanyue slowly walked out in the wedding dress, Zhang Hui’s eyes widened.
Wanyue was slightly shorter than Mingyu but her 168 cm figure was clearly more graceful than the average girl’s. Her waist was slender, her bust full, and the ethereal wedding dress floated with the word “happiness.” Her fragrant shoulders were partially exposed, and as she looked at Zhang Hui with a smile, her delicate skin and sexy collarbone made one want to kiss her. Around her neck was still the platinum necklace Mingyu had given her.
This necklace was put on her by Mingyu herself when they made their commitment.
Now, after 10 years of twists and turns, accompanied by their love and the pure, holy wedding dress, it’s finally about to blossom.
“I look beautiful, right?”
Song Wanyue looked at Zhang Hui’s dazed eyes with satisfaction and couldn’t help but boast, “Mingyu will definitely like it.”
Zhang Hui stumbled, and the shop owner couldn’t help but laugh quietly from the side.
Happiness doesn’t need to be spoken of; one look at Wanyue’s eyes is enough to see how deeply she loves her partner.
“So, you’re going to propose in a wedding dress?”
On the way back, Zhang Hui was dumbfounded by this explosive news. Song Wanyue nodded, feeling very good: “Mingyu said there would be some rain tonight, so she told me not to pick her up and didn’t tell me her flight number, just to wait at home. I’m planning to go home now and start preparing a candlelight dinner, waiting for her to come home…”
Her eyes were full of longing.
She had imagined this scene countless times.
Her Mingyu, weary from the journey, arriving home to a romantic candlelight dinner she had prepared, and then she would surprise her by kneeling on one knee in her wedding dress…
What would Mingyu’s expression be?
Would she be so happy that she’d be stunned? Or would she secretly shed tears?
There are some moments of mutual understanding that are gifts from heaven.
Since the morning, everyone had noticed that Xiao Mingyu was exceptionally happy. The tight, anxious expression she had worn for days due to her busyness had finally softened, and even her business partners noticed. One of them, while shaking her hand, smiled and said, “Director Xiao, you’ve worked hard. 7 days of work, you must really miss your family.”
Xiao Mingyu caught the teasing in his tone and smiled faintly, “Yes.”
As she said this, she couldn’t help but gently rub the ring on her ring finger, a ring she had been wearing for days, hoping it would absorb her presence.
She had been planning for a long time. As soon as she got off the plane today and returned home, she was going to kneel on one knee and formally propose to Wanyue.
Would Wanyue be shocked and flustered by her “recklessness”?
Mingyu couldn’t help but smile, her eyes shining brightly. Or would she be moved to tears?
The business partner, who was still holding her hand: “…”
In his eyes, she was the typical strong, self-disciplined workaholic, a powerful woman whose aura was more intimidating than most men’s. Whether it was her business acumen, eloquence, or character, she commanded respect. It was hard to imagine that the cold-faced Director Xiao had such a side.
In the afternoon, most of the older people, who had nothing to do, returned to the hotel to rest.
The younger ones went to the nearby pedestrian street to have fun, eat, and drink.
Xiao Mingyu frowned, repeatedly checking her phone. Her assistant, Xiao He, was also anxious, “After finally finishing the work, why does the weather have to hold us up? Ugh, it’s so frustrating.”
Xiao Mingyu looked at her watch. She was a decisive person, and since the plane definitely couldn’t take off, she figured it was better to find another way than to complain. There were no direct high-speed trains from this city, and changing trains wouldn’t be efficient. She calculated the time it would take to drive. If she didn’t stop, she should be able to see Wanyue by evening.
However, driving in this weather posed some risks.
In the past, when she was alone, it wasn’t a big deal. But now, with elderly parents and Wanyue to care for, she had to be more cautious.
When Xiao Mingyu called, Song Wanyue was happily wearing an apron and cooking at home. Even over the phone, Mingyu could hear her clumsily trying to cover the pot and chop vegetables at the same time.
“Hello. Are you on your way to the airport?”
Wanyue’s voice was full of excitement. Xiao Mingyu looked at the rain outside, suppressing her disappointment. “Really cooking yourself? Not secretly ordering takeout? Be careful not to cut your hand.”
Song Wanyue bit her lip, “Don’t tease me. I’m making it myself, and you have to eat it all when you get back.”
Xiao Mingyu laughed, “Eat it all, huh?” She couldn’t help but draw out her words to tease her, “That would be quite a lot. Will you join me in some exercise afterward?”
Song Wanyue blushed at that and chided, “You’re terrible. Hurry back. I need to get back to preparing the food.”
After hanging up, Xiao Mingyu was silent for a long time. She couldn’t bear the thought of Wanyue waiting in vain. She checked the time, calculated how long it would take, and looked at the weather outside the window. She instructed Xiao He, “I’ll drive back. You take care of the follow-up matters here.”
••••
The rain on the road was heavy, with thick black clouds rolling in the sky. Lightning and thunder seemed to crash directly onto the car roof. Even though she was an experienced driver who had driven at night many times before, Xiao Mingyu was fully alert.
When she reached the service area midway, the rain had lessened, and the thick clouds that had been following her finally dispersed, with rays of light bursting through.
Xiao Mingyu took a breath, feeling utterly exhausted. She opened a small crack in the window, breathing in the fresh air, her eyelids growing heavy.
The air after a storm is always the freshest.
Xiao Mingyu rested briefly. As the rain had lightened, she continued driving home without delay.
The closer she got to home, the better her mood became. Thinking about Wanyue and how she had secretly called her mother to prepare for the wedding, Xiao Mingyu felt much more clear-headed.
The speed limit on the highway was 120 km/h, and Mingyu kept her speed at around 110. As she approached a curve at the foot of the mountain, she heard a tearing screech from the opposite direction, shattering the quiet of the valley. Her exhaustion from the past few days slowed her reactions. By the time she saw the large truck skidding on the wet road, breaking through the guardrail and barreling toward her, it was already too late.
What does death feel like?
Mingyu and Wanyue had discussed this topic once.
Mingyu had earnestly told Wanyue, “My mom once told me that someone in our hometown had a near-death experience. They said that when you die, all the scenes from your life flash before your eyes like a movie, and then your body feels no pain. There’s even a moment when you can feel your soul leaving your body, so it’s not that scary after all.”
Song Wanyue, frightened like a little rabbit, curled up in Mingyu’s arms, holding onto her waist. “Let’s not talk about that. We both need to live well.”
She couldn’t bear the thought of Mingyu getting hurt, let alone dying.
If Mingyu were to suffer even a single injury, it would cause her unbearable pain.
And now, the hot, crimson blood was trickling down from Mingyu’s head. It felt like more than just blood was draining away—it was warmth, breath, her very life.
She tried to raise her hand to cover the wound, but her arm merely brushed weakly across her face.
The ring she had secretly hidden for so long was now stained with bright red blood.
Mingyu’s lips trembled weakly, her breath coming in labored gasps. Her lips, losing their color, whispered softly, “Wanyue, Wanyue…”
In her mind, she replayed the soft words of the past.
—Don’t be mad, Wanyue. I promise, I’ll definitely come back to be with you on the last day.
When I return this time, I’ll talk to General Manager Xu and try to reduce the number of business trips so I can spend more time with you.
Be good and wait for me at home.
Our wedding is so close.
Why did they suddenly start calling you sister-in-law?
••••
Xiao Mingyu felt so unwilling.
The two of them, just two girls, had gone through so many hardships and setbacks, faced countless opposition and doubts.
They had fought so hard to be together.
And she hadn’t yet said the words she had rehearsed in her heart thousands and thousands of times.
—Wanyue, will you marry me?
