Meng Po Gave Her a Bowl of Soup (GL) - Chapter 5
After Mingyu’s funeral arrangements were completed, Song Wanyue was taken back home by her parents. They stayed by her side, fearing she might do something drastic in her despair.
It wasn’t just her parents who were worried; anyone who knew about Mingyu and Wanyue’s relationship was deeply concerned.
Their love had spanned so long, starting from their youth, promising a lifetime together, only to be abruptly cut short.
Who could not be heartbroken?
Especially when it was two people who loved each other so deeply, who wanted to be together 24 hours a day, and who were about to see a rainbow after weathering a storm…
In the days following Mingyu’s departure, Song Wanyue’s parents were utterly distraught for their daughter.
When she first got home, Wanyue seemed like a soulless puppet. She lay in bed, refusing to eat or drink.
On the 4th day, unable to bear it any longer, her parents tried to force her to get up and eat some porridge, but they failed.
The porridge dripped from the corners of Wanyue’s mouth. She remained unmoved, her eyes vacant, staring blankly ahead.
She hadn’t eaten or slept in a long time, and now even her tears had dried up.
This terrified her parents. In desperation, they called a doctor friend.
The doctor, who brought life-saving nutritional medication, also brought along a well-regarded psychologist, named Joy.
After starting an IV drip, the doctor and Wanyue’s parents reluctantly left the room, leaving only Joy and Wanyue.
Under the soft light, Joy carefully observed Wanyue.
She was a woman of breathtaking beauty, but it was heartbreakingly marred.
Her pale cheeks, tear-filled eyes, and the scabs and swelling from her bitten lips.
••••
Joy turned around again, noticing that the windows in the room had been urgently secured by her parents, making it impossible to leave from either inside or outside. All the hard objects in the room had been removed.
They were afraid she might harm herself.
“Are you a psychologist?”
Wanyue asked softly, her voice weak. Her tone was somewhat ethereal and hoarse, causing Joy to shiver. She nodded, “Yes, I am.”
Joy found that Wanyue was different from the usual “patients” she encountered. She didn’t seem as dire as described by friends on the way over, so there was no need for pretense.
Wanyue stared quietly at Joy for a long time before softly saying, “I’m not going to die.”
Her words pierced Joy’s cautious heart, leaving her astonished as she looked at Wanyue.
Wanyue stared at the ceiling for a while. In just four days, her once full cheeks had sunken in.
“I promised her…”
Eventually, tears fell from her eyes.
Once upon a time,
Mingyu used to hold her, kiss her, and they would watch the stars together on the rooftop.
“Do you see that star? Is it a shooting star?”
Wanyue, with a childish tug on Mingyu’s sleeve, looked up expectantly. Mingyu smiled indulgently and kissed her cheek, “That’s a satellite.”
Wanyue’s body stiffened for a moment, and she gave Mingyu a reproachful look.
Mingyu laughed, pulling her closer and gently swaying her, “Yes, it’s a shooting star.”
Whatever Wanyue said was true.
“Then I’ll make a wish.”
Wanyue, satisfied with Mingyu’s response, clasped her hands together and earnestly began to wish.
Under the night sky, her cheeks were gently outlined by the moonlight, and her lips curved upwards, making Mingyu guess that her wish must be a good one.
“What is it?”
In the end, Xiao Mingyu couldn’t help but lean closer and gently ask.
Song Wanyue smiled, “Why should I tell you? You haven’t even tried to coax me.”
Haven’t coaxed her?
The next moment, a passionate kiss ended with Song Wanyue blushing and begging.
Xiao Mingyu’s lips were a vivid red, her eyes narrowed, her long hair cascading over her shoulders. With a mix of seduction and suggestion, she asked, “Is this enough coaxing?”
If not, they could continue in bed.
Unable to stand her smug look, Song Wanyue playfully pinched her and smiled as she leaned against her shoulder.
“And you say I’m a child, but you want to hear my secret.”
Xiao Mingyu held her, inhaling the sweet fragrance from her hair.
Wanyue’s voice, gentle and winding, flowed quietly.
“My wish is… I hope we can meet and love each other in every lifetime.”
Her heart felt like it had been struck by something.
Xiao Mingyu stared blankly at Wanyue, whose eyes were filled with tenderness. “Don’t you want that?”
“I… I…”
The usually strong Mingyu choked up, her eyes red as she looked at Song Wanyue.
She had met Wanyue when she was seventeen.
At that time, her father had passed away due to an accident, leaving their home in ruins and her already frail mother bedridden.
Every day, every night, Xiao Mingyu cried countless tears.
Before she turned 18, she had already faced life’s harsh trials and taken on the responsibilities of the family.
Back then, Xiao Mingyu was still a student. Her teacher, knowing her situation, wanted to organize a fundraiser at school, but proud Xiao Mingyu refused.
Eventually, the teacher arranged for her to tutor a junior high school student.
It was said that the student was good-looking, with large eyes and red lips, speaking gently but not serious about studying, lost in novels and anime, and with poor grades.
Xiao Mingyu always remembered her first meeting with Song Wanyue.
The weather was perfect that day. Xiao Mingyu nervously stood at Wanyue’s doorstep and was warmly welcomed inside by her parents, who exchanged polite words.
“Little teacher, our child is really… sorry to trouble you.”
“Don’t be fooled by her small size and gentle appearance; she’s actually quite unruly and has driven away several teachers.”
“Ah…”
Song Wanyue, in a fluffy nightgown, rubbed her eyes groggily and froze when she saw Xiao Mingyu.
Holding a book, Xiao Mingyu wore a white shirt and faded jeans. Her clear eyes, slightly nervous, examined Wanyue, her lips curved attractively, thin and upturned.
Due to Wanyue’s parents’ “honest” introduction, Xiao Mingyu initially had a poor impression of her new student.
Unruly… or rather, very bad…
Sunlight fell on her, and Song Wanyue felt as if she were seeing the “first love” often depicted in comic books.
Her heart raced a bit as she stared at Xiao Mingyu, watching her slightly awkward smile.
••••
Later, they went through so much together.
Parents’ furious outbursts, being kicked out, moving to another city.
Wandering alone…
Xiao Mingyu didn’t mind much. She always felt her life was destined for suffering.
But Wanyue was different… She had lived a life of ease and comfort, like a young lady, and shed many tears traveling with her.
Xiao Mingyu never imagined that if there were another life, Wanyue would still want to be with her.
Wanyue seemed to see through her. Lifting her arms to embrace Mingyu’s neck, she whispered, “You are the pride of my life.”
At that moment,
Xiao Mingyu couldn’t help but cry, yet stubbornly choked up, “We don’t even know what the next life will be like.”
Song Wanyue, smiling, gazed steadily at her, “No matter what it is, even if you are a star, I will be the moon that orbits around you.”
Xiao Mingyu lowered her head, tears falling steadily.
Wanyue…
If you don’t regret, I am willing to hold onto that bit of moonlight for you.
••••
“But I’m older than you, and I’m worried about you.”
Sometimes, Xiao Mingyu seemed more like a child in Wanyue’s eyes. Wanyue hugged her waist, resting her cheek against her neck, gently saying, “Alright, let’s make a promise. No matter who goes first, we’ll wait for the other on the road to the underworld, okay?”
They both needed to be well.
Life is not just about love.
It’s also about the people around them.
As memories surged, tears fell one by one. Song Wanyue suddenly sat up, “I want to drink some porridge.”
No one expected that the once timid Wanyue, who had always hid behind Mingyu and was pampered by her, would be so strong.
Nor did anyone know she would go to Mingyu’s hometown the next morning.
In Mingyu’s home, there was only her mother, Huang Lan, whom she deeply cared about.
An old person sending off a young person.
Huang Lan’s already frail health had deteriorated. The last time Wanyue and Mingyu had visited her during a holiday, she was still healthy, but now, she needed a cane to walk.
She was alone, old and frail, and her only daughter was gone.
When Huang Lan saw Song Wanyue, she couldn’t help but embrace her and cry heartbrokenly.
Song Wanyue bit her lip. Though her own heart ached as if bleeding, she gently comforted Huang Lan, softly saying, “Auntie, you still have me.”
And her.
Mingyu would surely not rest easy about her mother.
She couldn’t let her soul be unsettled.
••••
Not to mention others, even Huang Lan was initially opposed. Unlike Wanyue’s parents, Huang Lan had witnessed firsthand how her daughter and Wanyue had struggled through the years.
In her heart, Wanyue had already become like another daughter to her
As an elderly woman, Huang Lan, who was even older than Wanyue, had lost her husband and now her daughter. She felt like a helpless, useless old woman in this world, unable to delay her child any longer.
Wanyue was still so young; she might be sad now, but in the future… with her talents, she would eventually meet someone who would treat her well.
What about her past?
Wasn’t it just delaying the child?
Facing Huang Lan’s refusal, Song Wanyue quietly listened to everything she had to say. Looking at the photos of Xiao Mingyu as a child, held in Huang Lan’s arms, she finally turned her head and looked at Huang Lan with red eyes, saying, “Auntie, you know I love her.”
Huang Lan stared blankly at Wanyue. Wanyue’s voice was soft, “She is no longer here… The one I’m most worried about is you. If I go to find her now, she would be upset that I left you behind.”
••••
Huang Lan always believed her feelings for her husband were as deep as the ocean.
But she never expected…
In the end, Wanyue still took Huang Lan back.
The Song family elders remained silent.
Wanyue spent the entire day running up and down, getting Huang Lan checked out. The doctor said the tests showed she had suffered significant stress and had a mild stroke, and needed plenty of rest.
On the 7th day.
Wanyue brought Huang Lan back to her and Mingyu’s home.
This home, once filled with their joy and happiness, was the warmest place in Wanyue’s heart.
Now, without that person, the house felt so cold, so icy.
The table was covered with food that had long since gone cold and even spoiled, and the melted candles were clumped on the table.
Mingyu was gone.
Her love was gone.
Everything now cuts through her heart.
Huang Lan comforted Wanyue once more before retreating to her room to cry in secret.
Wanyue wiped her tears and began cleaning the house, throwing away spoiled food and tidying every corner of the room.
She wasn’t used to working; after a morning of effort, her back ached so much she could barely stand upright.
At noon, Huang Lan got up to cook. Wanyue, holding her aching back, wanted to help, but Huang Lan, with tears in her eyes, said, “Child, I know you’re good to me, but I’m not useless.”
Wanyue bit her lip, looking at Huang Lan. “Auntie, am I really so useless?”
When Mingyu was here, she would have quickly finished these tasks and then chatted with Huang Lan.
Huang Lan sighed deeply, “You’re good, you…”
In the midst of extreme sadness, comforting someone is often futile.
Huang Lan prepared a simple meal, and Wanyue made a bowl of noodles, the only dish she had ever cooked for Mingyu.
She had thought she was making it for herself, but in the end, Huang Lan saw an extra pair of chopsticks on the table. She looked up at Wanyue, who gently said, “Auntie, today is the 7th day. She will definitely come back to see us.”
••••
—She will definitely come back.
Because of these words,
Wanyue kept the door open and sat waiting at the entrance after sunset.
She was afraid that since she hadn’t been home these past few days, Mingyu might not find her way back without her scent.
Later, she reconsidered and turned off all the lights, fearing that if Mingyu’s spirit returned and saw the house so brightly lit, it might be uncomfortable.
Huang Lan sat dazedly on the sofa, leaning on her cane as if waiting for something.
From sunset to dark,
Wanyue did not wait for Mingyu.
Downstairs, there was a faint sound of a car, followed by the “clack clack” of high heels. Wanyue remained still, her head bowed, silently waiting.
Her legs had gone numb, and her heart was growing cold…
After an unknown amount of time,
A pair of legs stopped in front of her, standing still.
Wanyue’s reaction was slow. She hesitantly looked up and met a pair of unfamiliar eyes.
It was a woman.
The woman was tall, with an outstanding presence, a small face, and bright red lips—a stranger she had never seen before.
But those eyes…
Almost instinctively, Wanyue murmured, “Mingyu?”
Hearing the sound, Huang Lan, with her cane, hobbled out quickly. When she saw the person in front of her, the light that had just appeared in her eyes faded.
The unfamiliar woman, seeing her, was also taken aback. Her eyes flashed with an imperceptible red. She composed herself, bent down, and softly said to the crouching Wanyue, “Miss Song, hello, I’m Xu Ruying, Mingyu’s colleague.”
