My Black Moonlight Wife Says She Loves Me - Chapter 10
The moment Huo Jianan woke up, she saw a person in white standing before her, speaking to Ruan Nianning. Noticing she was awake, the person smiled and asked, “Miss Huo, how are you feeling today? Is your head still hurting?”
Huo Jianan slowly sat up and shook her head to test it. “No pain. I feel much better.”
Ruan Nianning introduced them. “Jianan, this is your attending physician, Doctor Zhou.”
Huo Jianan greeted him politely. “Good morning, Doctor Zhou. Thank you for performing the surgery yesterday.”
Doctor Zhou replied, “Miss Huo, you’re too kind. Saving patients is a doctor’s duty; there’s no need to thank me.”
Huo Jianan touched the gauze on her head and ventured, “Doctor Zhou, I feel completely recovered. I’d like to go home. Can I be discharged today?”
Before Doctor Zhou could answer, Grandma Huo’s voice suddenly boomed, “Absolutely not!”
Huo Jianan startled and turned toward the doorway. Sure enough, Grandma Huo’s figure appeared in the doorway the next moment.
“Grandma, you’re here so early.”
Grandma Huo gave a curt nod and turned to Doctor Zhou. “A cranial hemorrhage is no minor matter. Although the surgery was successful, we can’t let our guard down. We’ll stick to yesterday’s plan: three days of observation in the hospital. Once we’re certain there are no complications, she can be discharged.”
“Very well, Madam Huo,” Doctor Zhou replied. “I agree completely.”
“Grandma, I’m really fine. I know my own body…”
Huo Jianan met Grandma Huo’s authoritative gaze and swallowed the rest of her words.
“You know? If you really knew, you wouldn’t have helped your wife hide this from me the other night. And you caught it yourself? How can catching a cold cause intracranial bleeding?”
Huo Jianan fell silent, not daring to speak.
Ruan Nianning also lowered her head, not daring to interject.
The atmosphere in the room suddenly became awkward and heavy. Doctor Zhou broke the tension. “Miss Huo, please listen to your grandmother. Stay in the hospital for another two days of observation. It will put everyone’s minds at ease.”
“Alright, alright,” Huo Jianan agreed. “I’ll follow the doctor’s orders.”
Seeing her granddaughter agree without protest, Grandma Huo’s expression softened considerably. She exchanged a few more words with Doctor Zhou.
After Doctor Zhou left, Grandma Huo approached the bed. Noticing that her granddaughter’s complexion was rosier and her color much improved from the previous day, Grandma Huo’s expression brightened further. “Nannan, what would you like to eat?”
Huo Jianan immediately replied, “I’d love some youtiao (fried dough sticks), shengjian bao (pan-fried buns), and a bowl of douhua (tofu pudding). If they don’t have that, soy milk would be fine too.”
Before Huo Jianan could answer, Grandma Huo had already instructed Butler He, “The usual: Propolis Bun, toast, and milk. And bring her a plate of fruit.”
You’ve already decided everything, Huo Jianan thought. Why even ask for my opinion?
To her previous assessment of Grandma Huo as shrewd and authoritative, Huo Jianan now added another trait: overbearing matriarch.
Still, she’d never tried Propolis Bun before. She didn’t know if it tasted good, but it sounded healthy for the skin. “Grandma, could you prepare another one for…?”
“For your wife, right?” Grandma Huo sneered. “I doubt she’d even deign to eat anything from the Huo Family. She’s probably still dreaming of going back to being a big star.”
Huo Jianan immediately sensed the hidden meaning in her grandmother’s words. Had something happened between them?
Butler He quickly interjected, “Miss, the Young Mistress’s portion has already been prepared. We’ve substituted whole-wheat toast for white, reduced the fruit portion, and added a chicken br3ast and vegetable salad.”
After a moment’s thought, Huo Jianan guessed that Ruan Nianning, as a major celebrity, likely had strict dietary requirements for maintaining her figure. This might explain Grandma Huo’s remark about her “disdaining Huo Family food.” It was clear that, deep down, Grandma Huo didn’t want Ruan Nianning—now married into a wealthy family—to return to acting.
“That’s wonderful! Nianning and I will eat together later.”
In the hospital room, Grandma Huo wore a stern expression, Ruan Nianning kept her head bowed in meek submission, and Butler He stood trembling. Only Huo Jianan smiled.
She was the only patient, yet also the only one radiating warmth, like sunlight piercing through dark clouds. Golden rays streamed through the layers, weaving countless threads of light.
“Grandma, have you eaten yet? Coming to see me so early, you must have skipped breakfast. I’ll share my Propolis Bun with you—it’s good for beauty and health. You’ll stay young and beautiful forever.”
Grandma Huo paused in surprise before replying after a moment, “I don’t need your Propolis Bun. I have my own breakfast.” Her tone remained stiff, but a hint of amusement flickered in her eyes. “I’ll eat at the office. You two can enjoy your meal here.”
“Alright, Grandma. Remember to eat a proper breakfast! Don’t worry about me—Nianning and Butler He are taking excellent care of me.”
“Hmm.” Grandma Huo glanced at them again before turning to leave.
Butler He followed her out, escorting her to her car.
“Butler He, have you noticed Miss Huo seems different lately? She never used to talk to me so much, never smiled in my presence, and certainly never asked if I’d had breakfast.”
Butler He pondered for a moment. “Yes, Miss Huo’s temper has improved significantly these past few days. She’s become much more sensible.”
Grandma Huo murmured to herself, “Could it be that getting married and starting a family has finally made her grow up?”
In the hospital room, sunlight streamed through the window, and a gentle morning breeze drifted in through the half-open pane.
Huo Jianan and Ruan Nianning sat at the table, bathed in the warm light, eating breakfast. Huo Jianan pushed the whole-wheat bread, eggs, and salad toward Ruan Nianning, then rested her chin in her hands, gazing at her with wide, blinking eyes.
“Why are you staring at me like that?” Ruan Nianning asked.
“I’m watching you eat the whole-wheat bread. I can’t stand that rough texture myself.”
Ruan Nianning paused, then picked up a slice of whole-wheat bread and slowly ate it with the vegetable salad, occasionally sipping lemon water.
When she looked up, Huo Jianan was still staring at her. “Why are you always staring at me? Aren’t you going to eat?”
Huo Jianan grinned dreamily. “Wife, you look so beautiful when you eat! So quiet and graceful! I bet you were the school beauty back in the day, with tons of secret admirers.”
Huo Jianan seemed particularly chatty today.
“Hmm, it’s alright,” Ruan Nianning replied, her head lowered and her tone indifferent.
If she could, she’d rather not have so many boys liking her. That way, she wouldn’t get cornered in the bathroom by girls, who would yank her hair and slap her…
“I heard you transferred from a fancy private school?!”
“Hahaha, a fallen princess? Too bad, there’s no Prince Charming to rescue you here!”
“Just as I thought—she’s been trying to seduce everyone since day one!”
“So cheap! Are all the girls from your fancy school this slutty and manipulative?! Hahaha!”
“What?! You dare bite me?!” The ringleader of the group flew into a rage, unleashing a flurry of punches and kicks.
Huo Jianan watched as Ruan Nianning’s expression darkened, her gaze turning icy, and a cold aura radiating from her. Her heart skipped a beat.
Did I say something wrong?
Just then, Ruan Nianning’s phone rang. Huo Jianan glanced at the caller ID—Zou Guohua.
Zou Guohua? Who’s that?
Ruan Nianning frowned visibly at the name, but without bothering to hide it from Huo Jianan, she answered the call.
“Hello? What is it?” Ruan Nianning’s tone was impatient.
“N-nothing much,” the middle-aged man’s voice on the phone was hesitant. “Today’s the third day of your marriage, right? By tradition, you and Miss Huo should be returning home… Are you coming back?”
Ruan Nianning sneered. “Returning home? To what home?! I haven’t had a home in years!”
“How can you say that? I’m your father. Wherever your father is, that’s your home…”
Huo Jianan listened silently, realizing this man was Ruan Nianning’s father—his own father-in-law.
Before he could finish, Ruan Nianning cut him off. “That’s your home with that woman and your children. It’s not my home. My mother’s been gone for years. Now my home…” She turned to Huo Jianan, her lips curving into a soft, tender smile. “I’m married to Jianan now. The Huo Family is my home.”
Her beautiful, captivating eyes shone with a hint of questioning, as if asking Jianan, Is that right?
Huo Jianan nodded firmly in agreement. “Yes, we have our own little family now. The Huo Family is your support.”
Zou Guohua persisted. “That’s not entirely true. Your stepmother and sister are very concerned about you. Our whole family watched the wedding coverage last night, and we’re all so happy for you! Ningning, could you come back for a visit, even if just for a little while?”
“Jianan is in the hospital and can’t come today,” Ruan Nianning said.
Upon hearing that Miss Huo was injured, Zou Guohua immediately offered to visit her in the hospital.
This time, Ruan Nianning didn’t bother asking Huo Jianan’s opinion and coldly refused. After exchanging a few more words with her father, she took her phone to the bathroom and closed the door.
Huo Jianan faintly heard Ruan Nianning’s voice, barely suppressing her anger. “Zou Guohua, last time you said you’d repair my mother and grandmother’s graves, I gave you two million yuan. Did you do it? I won’t give you another penny!”
Hearing the door open, Huo Jianan quickly lowered her head, pretending to be focused on her breakfast. She picked up a Propolis Bun and took a bite.
Ugh! Propolis Buns are disgusting! How can something so awful be so expensive? No wonder Grandma never eats them!
After one bite, Huo Jianan abandoned the bun and grabbed a fragrant, soft slice of toast instead.
When Ruan Nianning returned to the table, the dark cloud on her face had vanished. She carefully pushed the fruit platter closer to Huo Jianan. “Jianan, have some fruit.”
Huo Jianan hummed in acknowledgment and picked up a cherry. The flesh was plump, fresh, and sweet.
Ruan Nianning smiled and urged her to eat two more slices of honeydew melon.
As Huo Jianan ate slowly, she thought about how difficult Ruan Nianning’s life must be. Her relationship with her father, Zou Guohua, seemed strained, to the point where she had even changed her surname. This wasn’t surprising, considering Zou Guohua had long since remarried and started a new family. That place could hardly be considered Ruan Nianning’s home anymore.
Huo Jianan watched Ruan Nianning’s radiant smile. Despite the anger and resentment simmering within her after that phone call, she still maintained a warm and gentle demeanor toward her enemy, forcing herself to appear genuinely happy.
The thought of Ruan Nianning’s suppressed emotions made Huo Jianan feel deeply sorry for her.
“Honey, could you do me a favor?”
Ruan Nianning raised an eyebrow slightly, her smile softening. “What is it? Tell me.”
“I’m being discharged in a couple of days, right? Could you go out and pick out some outfits for me? Your fashion sense is impeccable; I trust your taste completely.”
Ruan Nianning was a little surprised but readily agreed. “Of course.”
Butler He, standing nearby, said, “I’ll inform the driver to pick up the Young Mistress.”
“Mm-hmm,” Huo Jianan replied, smiling again. “Honey, you don’t need to come back for lunch. Just take your time and pick out plenty of outfits for me. I also want some hats and bags. I’ll wait for you for dinner.”
“Okay.” Ruan Nianning poured her a warm glass of milk, her eyes crinkling slightly—this time, her smile was genuine.
Huo Jianan:Â …
As expected, not having to face my enemy all day improves my mood.
I’ve never tried a Propolis Bun. In this story’s setting, they’re both expensive and awful-tasting, hahaha! If you’ve tried one, please share your thoughts—are they really that bad?
