My Black Moonlight Wife Says She Loves Me - Chapter 11
After breakfast, Ruan Nianning applied makeup, changed her clothes, and soon the driver arrived at the hospital.
Ruan Nianning picked up her bag and waved cheerfully at Huo Jianan. “Darling, I’m heading out. Take care of yourself and eat well for lunch.”
Huo Jianan tilted her head back, her eyes crinkling with laughter. “Got it, wifey.”
As soon as Ruan Nianning left, Huo Jianan’s smile vanished, and she sank comfortably into her wheelchair—finally free from having to act.
She carefully maneuvered the wheelchair into the room, positioning herself by the window to bask in the sunlight. The November air outside felt crisp and chilly against her skin.
With Ruan Langlang gone, she felt much more relaxed.
Now, under the guise of Miss Huo, she still had many mysteries to unravel. When had the original Huo Jianan’s mother died? How had she passed away? What was Meng Xi’en’s connection to the Huo Family? Was she an adopted daughter? When had she been taken in?
And what about Ruan Nianning? When had she begun her revenge plot? When had she joined forces with Meng Xi’en?
Most importantly, what exactly was the nature of this vengeance?
These were the questions she needed to answer.
“Miss, it’s getting cold. Be careful not to catch a chill.” Butler He approached and closed the window, then carefully draped a woolen blanket over her legs.
“Thank you,” Huo Jianan said, grateful for the butler’s attentiveness. “Butler He, how long have you been with the Huo Family?”
Butler He looked slightly surprised. Why is Miss asking about my history today?
While Miss hadn’t been back at the Huo Family for a very long time—only two years—it wasn’t a short time either. Yet she remained quiet and reserved, rarely initiating conversations with others, let alone showing interest in their lives. Everyone in the Huo Family knew her two main passions: gaming and her beloved idol, Big Star Ruan Nianning.
“Over twenty years,” Butler He replied. “My mother was the Huo Family’s butler before me. After she retired, Madam appointed me to take her place.”
Huo Jianan nodded. “Grandma must have trusted you and your mother deeply.”
Butler He smiled proudly. “Madam has always treated us well, so we naturally strive to serve the Huo Family to the best of our abilities.”
“When did Sister Meng come to work here?”
Butler He chuckled. “Why are you suddenly so curious about these things, Miss?”
Huo Jianan felt a surge of nervousness, but her expression remained calm. She lowered her head, stroking the soft blanket on her lap. “No particular reason. It just occurred to me. I wonder if Sister Meng will visit me today?”
The original owner of this body had a close relationship with Meng Xi’en, treating her like a beloved older sister and confidante.
“She’ll definitely come, Miss. Miss Meng is very busy, but she’ll come after work. If she doesn’t have any engagements, she’ll probably arrive around 8 or 9 o’clock. Would you like to stay up and have a late-night snack with her? I can make your favorite sweet fermented rice dumplings.”
“That sounds lovely.”
“Madam is so pleased to see how close you two are,” Butler He said slowly, his expression warm with contentment. “Miss Meng’s mother passed away early. Her family and the Huo Family have been close for generations. After Madam married into the Huo Family, Miss Meng’s mother often visited. Later, she married the Third Miss of the Meng Family. A few years later, something happened to the Meng Family—the details remain unclear—and Miss Meng’s Mommy struck out on her own. By then, the Old Madam had been married into the Huo Family for many years and was in charge of the household. She provided them with a substantial sum as seed money, and Miss Meng’s Mommy’s company gradually began to thrive.”
“A few more years passed, and Miss Meng was born. Her mother was already in her late thirties when she gave birth to her, but the delivery went smoothly. The Meng couple was overjoyed, and Madam was equally delighted. At that time, Miss Zhujun—your Mommy—even held baby Meng Xi’en in her arms. Miss Zhujun refused to let go, saying she wanted to have a little one just like her someday.”
“My mother told me all this. She said Miss Meng’s mother was a very gentle and knowledgeable woman, and her own mother was a refined lady from a prominent family. The two were very close.”
“Then how did Sister Meng end up being adopted by our family?”
“Ah, later, Miss Meng’s Mommy fell ill and passed away. Miss Meng’s Mother, overwhelmed by grief, soon fell ill herself. Before she died, she entrusted her then-17-year-old daughter, who was still in high school, to Madam. That’s how Miss Meng came to live with the Huo Family.”
“Madam truly raised Miss Meng as her own granddaughter. She sent her to the best schools, hired the finest tutors, and even sent her abroad to study. Now that Miss Meng has finally grown up, she’s able to handle company affairs and assist Madam in managing the business.”
Huo Jianan recalled Meng Xi’en, whom she had met the previous day. Her aura was powerful, her demeanor sharp and capable, and her poise was graceful and generous—truly an outstanding woman.
After listening to the whole story, Huo Jianan couldn’t find any instance where the Huo Family or Grandma Huo had wronged Meng Xi’en or her mother. So why would she ally with Ruan Nianning to seek revenge against the Huo Family? And why would she plot to seize the family’s assets?
Huo Jianan took a deep, silent breath, her expression unchanged. Unfortunately, in the original novel, Meng Xi’en was a minor character with barely any screen time. Her backstory was never fully revealed.
The warmest part of the day in winter was midday. After lunch, Huo Jianan asked Butler He to fetch her a heavy coat. Wrapped up warmly, she had him push her wheelchair out into the garden for a stroll.
Besides them, a few other people were wandering through the garden. Tired of the monotonous, cold colors of the hospital room, they had come down to see the vibrant scenery of life: the green trees, the red camellias.
In the garden stood an orange tree, its branches laden with bright red oranges, a lively and festive sight.
A gust of wind rustled through the foliage, causing the Centella Asiatica and Monstera plants to sway gently.
“Miss,” Butler He said, “I’ll go get you a hat. Your head injury makes you vulnerable to the cold. Please wait here for me.”
His earnest instructions sounded like a parent sending a child to daycare. Huo Jianan smiled. “Butler He, I won’t wander off.”
Though she had eaten countless oranges, this was the first time Huo Jianan had ever seen an orange tree. Excitedly, she propelled her wheelchair forward until she was right beneath its branches.
A sign hung on the tree: “Ornamental Tree—Do Not Pick the Fruit.”
Yet some people seemed to delight in ignoring such signs. At that moment, a couple was brazenly climbing the tree to pluck oranges, oblivious to anyone else.
With a snap, the man broke off an orange, still attached to its branch, and tossed it down. “Catch!”
The woman stood beside Huo Jianan, her face alight with excitement as she prepared to catch the orange. Unfortunately, the man’s aim was terrible; the airborne fruit hurtled straight toward Huo Jianan’s head.
A normal person could easily have dodged or sidestepped the projectile, but Huo Jianan, confined to her wheelchair, had limited mobility. Seeing the orange hurtling toward her, she frantically crossed her arms above her head, shielding her injured skull.
“What are you doing?” a crisp, cool female voice cut through the air. The orange never struck Huo Jianan; a slender hand caught it mid-flight.
“This is a hospital, not a tourist farm. Your behavior could harm other patients.”
Huo Jianan lowered her arms and looked up at the speaker. The woman wore a white lab coat, identifying her as a doctor. Her hair, which fell to her collarbones, curled slightly outward, framing a delicate jawline.
The man and woman appeared to be in their early thirties. Instead of apologizing when rebuked, the man defiantly plucked another orange.
“Who did I hurt? Who’s injured here?” He slammed the freshly picked orange onto the ground, laughing loudly. “Did I hurt the orange? Or maybe the grass?”
He defiantly plucked four or five more oranges and hurled them to the ground one after another. The oranges shattered into pieces, their pulp crushed and juice splattering across the grass, some of it staining Huo Jianan’s pant leg.
“Who are you? So what if I’m hurting the oranges and the grass? What are you going to do about it? Tell them to sue me! Idiot!”
The female doctor’s fingers curled slightly at her side, a flicker of anger in her eyes.
The woman chimed in, “Exactly! You’re sticking your nose in where it doesn’t belong! Oranges grow to be picked, don’t they?!”
Huo Jianan propelled her wheelchair forward. “If you want to pick oranges, go to an orchard. They charge 100 yuan for all you can pick and eat. This is a hospital, and I’m a patient here. You nearly hit me with those oranges.”
The woman glared at Huo Jianan. “Mind your own business! Why would I go to an orchard? I like picking them here! You said ‘nearly hit’—that means I didn’t hit you. So shut your yap!”
A pair of absolute specimens, each more unreasonable and stubborn than the other.
“Your oranges stained my pants,” Huo Jianan said with a cold smile. “I never wash my pants. Just compensate me directly. Forget the small change—100,000 will do.”
“100,000?!” the woman shrieked like a startled groundhog. “You’re robbing us!”
Huo Jianan patiently explained, “These are already my cheapest pants. You should consider yourselves lucky.”
“Fucking hell! We ran into a crippled extortionist today!” the man roared, scrambling down from the tree in a rage. In his haste, a broken branch tore a rip in his jeans.
Huo Jianan offered a friendly warning, “Sir, your rear is about to be exposed. This is a public place, and such indecent exposure in front of two ladies is rather inappropriate.”
“You! I think you’re mentally ill!” the man snarled, raising his fist to strike.
Seeing his aggressive posture, Huo Jianan merely smiled faintly and turned to the female doctor. “It seems he’s about to assault me. Would you mind recording this?”
The female doctor paused, then smirked, pulled out her phone, and began recording.
The man grew even angrier. “What are you doing? Why are you filming? Didn’t you see she was the one trying to extort me?” He turned to Huo Jianan, glaring fiercely and cursing, his fist nearly touching the gauze on her head. “You crippled leech! Money-hungry lunatic! Your brain’s gone rotten! Coming to the hospital to rob people!”
Hearing the commotion, several other patients strolling in the garden turned to look.
Seizing the opportunity, the man shouted, “Everyone, see clearly! I didn’t lay a hand on her!”
Huo Jianan suddenly clutched her chest, closed her eyes, and cried out, “How terrifying! Doctor, help me! My chest hurts so much! If the police take a statement, please tell them the truth—he scared me! He’s entirely responsible!”
The man froze for a moment, then erupted in fury. “You b1tch! Trying to frame me now? I’ll beat you to death today!”
Whispers rippled through the crowd. “Who is this guy? Daring to hit Miss Huo of the Huo Family! And then claiming she’s extorting him?”
Rage burned in the man’s eyes. Just as he lunged forward, the female doctor shoved him back. Butler He arrived, stepping out of the elevator with another man in his fifties.
“Miss!” Butler He rushed forward to protect her when he saw someone about to strike her. “Who are you people? How dare you raise your hand to someone?”
The man in his fifties, who had been behind him, hurried over when he saw the commotion. He immediately lowered his hand. “Dad, you’re just coming from visiting Uncle? Perfect timing! This crazy cripple here is trying to extort 100,000 yuan from me!”
The man turned to look at the woman in the wheelchair and froze, his face draining of color. “Miss Huo! Miss Huo!”
“Dad, you know her? This cripple…”
Slap! Before he could finish, his father slapped him hard across the face. “Idiot! Are you blind? Do you even know who she is? She’s the Huo Family’s heiress! Would she extort you?”
The son, his cheek burning red, stared blankly. “The Huo… the Huo Family? Which Huo Family?”
The onlookers shook their heads. In Changbin, there was only one Huo Family.
Huo Jianan:Â Honey, someone’s trying to pelt me with oranges!
Ruan Nianning:Â I’ll pelt them right back! (She immediately hurls a whole crate of oranges at the attacker.)
Huo Jianan:Â That’s exactly why I love my wife’s fiery spirit!
