- Chapter 14 - Who Is She? She's So Beautiful!
Huo Jianan lay in bed, scrolling through her phone, occasionally glancing sideways at Ruan Langlang beside her.
Ruan Langlang was unusually quiet today, not teasing her at all. She seemed busy, typing incessantly, as if chatting with someone.
This lack of harassment made Huo Jianan uneasy. Stealing another glance, she noticed Ruan Langlang’s brow furrowing deeper and deeper, her expression troubled.
Huo Jianan turned to face Ruan Langlang, smiling warmly. “Honey, who are you chatting with? Is something bothering you?”
Ruan Langlang paused, tossed her phone aside, and smiled gently. “It’s nothing, just venting with a friend. We just got married—what could be bothering me? My only wish right now is for you to recover soon.”
Huo Jianan: “……”
If I hadn’t transmigrated, I might have almost believed her.
As expected, the gentler my wife’s smile, the more insincere her words.
Sigh, I still prefer the fierce Langlang from the bathroom earlier. At least she was being genuine then.
Speaking of friends, Huo Jianan had a suggestion. “Honey, why don’t you invite your friends over for dinner? We can all hang out together. I don’t want you to feel bored after marrying me. If you have any ideas, just tell me. Whether you want to start a company or travel the world, I’ll support you. Oh, and since you’re a big star, it would be great if you wanted to keep acting!”
Ruan Nianning’s eyes flickered, though her expression remained calm. Inside, however, a storm raged.
Why is Huo Jianan suddenly saying this?
Before their wedding, Ruan Nianning had made it clear that she didn’t want to continue acting after they married. She was afraid other people would covet her and didn’t want them to be apart for even a moment. She preferred they stay home together, perhaps playing games as a team.
Is Huo Jianan testing me?
But her smile seemed genuine, her gaze steady and unprobing. Huo Jianan was an open book, lacking the cunning to feign such composure.
Ruan Nianning stared intently at her, as if trying to decipher this Huo Jianan who had been acting so uncharacteristically for the past two days.
“What’s wrong, honey?” Huo Jianan felt uneasy under her gaze, a pang of fear in her heart. Had she said something wrong earlier, upsetting Ruan Nianning?
Heaven and earth, all I wanted was to cheer up this beautiful wolf and make her hate me less.
“Are you really okay with me continuing to act?”
“Mm-hmm. Life’s too short to not do what you love. If acting truly makes you happy, then go for it. But I do have one small request.”
Ruan Nianning suppressed her inner excitement. “What is it?”
“No overly revealing roles. You’re the Young Mistress of a wealthy family now; it wouldn’t be appropriate.”
Ruan Nianning’s eyes lit up, a smile curving her lips. “Of course not. I’ve never taken on such roles.”
This time, Ruan Nianning’s smile was genuine. She could act again—what wonderful news!
“Speaking of acting, honey, let’s watch TV together. It’s been ages since we last did.”
“Sounds good,” Ruan Nianning agreed readily, picking up the remote and turning on the television.
Several channels were airing the same historical drama. Ruan Nianning immediately recognized it as a series starring her close friend, the award-winning actress Song Shiyu. A massive hit from two years ago, some channels must be re-airing it now.
On the screen, Song Shiyu appeared ethereal and otherworldly in her snow-white robes, radiating a cool, peerless beauty.
Huo Jianan couldn’t help but exclaim, “Who’s that actress? She’s stunningly beautiful!”
Ruan Nianning froze, her heart pounding like a thunderclap.
Huo Jianan didn’t recognize Song Shiyu?!
They had dined with Sister Song twice, and Ruan Nianning had even asked Song Shiyu for a signed poster from this very hit drama for her best friend, who was a huge fan.
And now, Huo Jianan was asking who this actress was?
Ruan Nianning suppressed the shock in her eyes, forcing her heartbeat to return to normal.
Seeing Ruan Langlang’s motionless figure, Huo Jianan’s fingers stiffened on the remote control. She paused, then belatedly realized her mistake.
“Ahem, even if she’s beautiful, she’s nothing compared to you, my wife! You’re the most beautiful! Really!”
Having blurted out such a foolish compliment about another woman in front of her wife, Huo Jianan could only scramble to salvage the situation.
Ruan Nianning turned back, offering a smile that was both gentle and seductive. Her gaze flickered between genuine warmth and piercing scrutiny, leaving Huo Jianan uncertain whether she was being seduced or being seen through.
Huo Jianan felt a prickle of unease in her heart.
“Her name is Song Shiyu,” Ruan Nianning said. “She’s a top-tier celebrity, a film and television queen. She has countless fans, and she’s incredibly beautiful.”
What? Huo Jianan thought. She’s Song Shiyu! The female lead from the novel, the aloof film queen!
Huo Jianan couldn’t resist staring at the television screen, scrutinizing every detail. Sure enough, it was the female lead—stunningly beautiful, icily elegant, and radiating an undeniable aura of sophistication.
Almost simultaneously, she thought of her own Ruan Langlang. Ruan Langlang was equally beautiful and refined, though her allure differed from Song Shiyu’s icy detachment. Ruan Langlang possessed a captivating, sensual charm—a beauty that exuded a thousand different kinds of allure.
If forced to choose who was more captivating, Huo Jianan secretly favored her own Ruan Langlang.
“You two have such different vibes, darling,” Huo Jianan said. “You’re both incredibly beautiful, and you have tons of fans too.”
Ruan Nianning turned her head, her gaze fixed on the television screen as if intently watching the drama. “I actually worked with her once,” she remarked.
“Really? What show was it?”
“A movie. She was the lead actress, and I was just a minor supporting character.”
“Look at you now, darling! You’re a huge star too! You’ve made it! Most people don’t become overnight sensations. Even with talent, sometimes you just need a bit of luck.”
“Hmm… you’re right. Sometimes you need a bit of luck to meet the right people.”
Huo Jianan, relieved that his wife showed no signs of jealousy or displeasure, finally relaxed and settled in to watch the drama with her.
During the episode, Ruan Langlang shared numerous behind-the-scenes anecdotes, leaving Huo Jianan wide-eyed and laughing heartily.
“Honey, if you’re filming, can I visit the set and experience it firsthand?”
Ruan Nianning subtly glanced at her legs and smiled warmly. “Of course! You’re welcome to visit anytime.”
As they watched and chatted, they quickly finished an entire episode.
When the commercials started, Huo Jianan paused the show. “What’s this drama called? I’ll just buy VIP access.”
“Long Night Clear Song.”
Ruan Nianning was now absolutely certain: Huo Jianan not only didn’t recognize Song Shiyu, but she was also completely unaware of this blockbuster drama that had been a household name two years ago. She didn’t even remember the behind-the-scenes stories they had discussed during past dinners.
It was as if she had lost her memory.
Watching Huo Jianan shift beside her, settling down to sleep, Ruan Nianning’s mind raced. She picked up a necklace from the nearby table, its amethyst pendant glinting in the dim light.
Ruan Nianning dangled the necklace in front of Huo Jianan’s eyes. “Honey, remember this? You gave it to me last year. Could you get me a ruby necklace too?”
Huo Jianan glanced at it briefly. She didn’t know much about jewelry, but if her wife wanted it, she’d buy it.
“Sure, let’s go shopping together after I get out of the hospital.”
“Thank you, honey!” Ruan Nianning kissed her cheek happily.
Huo Jianan was now used to Ruan Langlang’s occasional kisses. “Time to sleep, darling.”
“Mm, should I help you turn over?”
“No need. I prefer sleeping on my back. It’s more comfortable.”
Soon, soft, even breathing filled the room as Huo Jianan drifted off to sleep.
In the darkness, Ruan Nianning lay wide-eyed, not a trace of sleepiness in her.
This amethyst necklace wasn’t actually a gift from Huo Jianan. Two years ago, when she and Sister Song attended an event together, the sponsors provided several jewelry necklaces. Huo Jianan casually remarked that she liked the amethyst pendant. Seeing her rare moment of genuine interest, Song Shiyu impulsively bought the trinket and gave it to her.
It was a trivial matter. Ruan Nianning had also bought small gifts for Song Shiyu before; they were simply good friends, as people often say.
When Huo Jianan later found out about this, she threw a jealous tantrum.
Yet the Huo Jianan before her now seemed completely unaware of any of this.
Ruan Nianning was utterly bewildered. Had she lost her memory? But how could she still recognize her, Grandma Huo, Butler He, and Sister Meng?
If she hadn’t lost her memory, why didn’t she recognize Sister Song, know about Long Night Clear Song, or even remember the amethyst necklace?
She couldn’t help but turn to gaze at her sleeping partner beside her, recalling Huo Jianan’s recent lack of initiative in intimacy, even her avoidance of their usual closeness.
The mystery deepened in Ruan Nianning’s heart. Huo Jianan, what exactly is wrong with you?
Ruan Nianning: Furious! How dare you praise another woman’s beauty right in front of me?!
Huo Jianan: I was wrong, I was wrong! Wife, you’re the most, most, most, most beautiful!
