My Black Moonlight Wife Says She Loves Me - Chapter 15
The next morning, Grandma Huo visited Huo Jianan at the hospital as usual.
Doctor Zhou changed her bandages. “The wound is small and healing well. Miss Huo has been recovering remarkably these past few days. We’ll observe her for another day. If everything looks good after removing the bandages tomorrow, she can be discharged.”
Huo Jianan cheered inwardly. Fantastic!
As soon as Doctor Zhou left, Grandma Huo said, “Nannan, I need to go to the company now. Come with me.”
“Alright, Grandma,” Huo Jianan replied, turning to Ruan Nianning. “Honey, I’ll take Grandma downstairs. You go ahead and eat breakfast.”
Ruan Nianning sat obediently at the table, smiling gently. “I’ll wait for you to come back up so we can eat together.”
Butler He pushed Huo Jianan’s wheelchair as they accompanied Grandma Huo to the elevator. In the underground parking garage, a Rolls-Royce was parked near the elevator.
The driver hurried to open the car door when he saw Grandma Huo approaching. But she didn’t get in immediately. Instead, she turned to Huo Jianan and asked, “Nannan, Sister Meng told me you want to join the company and help out?”
“Yes, Grandma. I want to join the company.”
“Are you serious about this, or is it just a passing whim?” Grandma Huo asked, her expression stern, her gaze devoid of the grandmotherly affection one might expect. She was as uncompromising as a cold, hard stone.
“If you’re just chasing novelty, you’d be better off staying home and playing with your wife however you please. The Huo Family’s success is the culmination of generations of hard work. I’d rather you spend your days eating, drinking, and enjoying yourself as a major shareholder than see you ruin the company. Sister Meng has already done an excellent job. With her in charge, I have complete peace of mind.”
Huo Jianan was speechless.
Well, that’s a brutal blow before I’ve even started. It seemed Grandma had already chosen Sister Meng as her successor, and viewed her granddaughter as a fragile porcelain doll—sensitive, easily broken, and incapable of handling significant responsibility.
“Think carefully about this and come back to me when you’ve made up your mind,” Grandma Huo said as she climbed into the car. The driver closed the door and hurried around to the driver’s seat.
Grandma Huo rolled down the window, her tone softening slightly. “Has Nianning been taking good care of you at the hospital these past few days?”
“Yes, Grandma. Nianning has been wonderful. She helped me bathe and even turned me over in bed at night.”
“You’re just like your mother, sometimes too naive and easily deceived by appearances.”
Huo Jianan’s heart skipped a beat. Had Grandma sensed something?
“Alright, I’m leaving now. If I get discharged tomorrow, let’s celebrate with dinner.”
“Okay, Grandma.”
Huo Jianan refused to touch the Propolis Bun. “Honey, can I have some of your whole-grain bread?”
“Why? Don’t you like your Propolis Bun?”
Huo Jianan made a face. “I’ve never tasted such a disgusting bun, and it’s so expensive!”
Hearing how awful it was only piqued Ruan Nianning’s curiosity. “Is it really that bad?”
“So bad it makes you question your life choices. Try it yourself if you don’t believe me.” Huo Jianan grabbed his wife’s whole-grain bread and took a big bite with milk.
Like a curious cat, Ruan Nianning stared at the Propolis Bun on the plate, turning it over and over. Finally, she couldn’t resist taking a small bite. She didn’t get any filling. Another bite, and the propolis flavor emerged—a faint fragrance at first, followed by a spicy, slightly bitter aftertaste that filled her mouth.
This… this really wasn’t good. Compared to this, even coarse grain bread tasted delicious.
Ruan Nianning frowned deeply, forcing down the Propolis Bun with difficulty. When she saw Huo Jianan reaching for her vegetable salad, she snatched it away. “Don’t eat mine. Go eat yours. There’s another Propolis Bun waiting for you.”
Huo Jianan paused, then turned to Butler He. “Butler He, have you eaten yet? I’m full today. You can have this Propolis Bun.”
Butler He replied, “Give it to Sister Wang and Sister Mei. They haven’t tried one yet.”
“Good idea! I wish I’d given them the other one too,” Huo Jianan said. “Butler He, after I’m discharged tomorrow, I think we should diversify the breakfast menu. Pan-fried buns, steamed soup dumplings, fried dough sticks, sesame balls, savory sauce pancakes, wontons, noodles, oatmeal, and steamed corn, purple sweet potatoes, and taro—we should rotate them to keep things interesting.”
Butler He nodded, jotting down the suggestions. “Noted.”
After finishing their meal, Huo Jianan said, “Honey, you don’t need to stay here at the hospital just to keep me company. If you want to go shopping, go ahead. Butler He and the others can take care of me.”
Ruan Nianning looked at her, puzzled. “Don’t you want me to stay with you?”
“No, it’s not that. Of course I want you here,” Huo Jianan thought to herself. But I know you can’t stand being around your enemy’s wife all day. I’m worried it’ll upset you.
“But I really want to try this viral cake and these trendy pastries. I’d go out to buy them myself, but I’m afraid Grandma will find out and scold me for leaving the hospital. Honey, could you get them for me?”
Ruan Nianning glanced at her. As long as Huo Jianan’s requests weren’t unreasonable, she always indulged her. “Sure, I’ll get you whatever you want.”
The addresses were scattered across the city—some in the east, others in the far north. Some shops didn’t even open until 11 a.m., and with the long queues, it would take up most of the day.
Ruan Nianning raised an eyebrow. Looks like Huo Jianan wants me out of the way.
Soon, it was almost nine o’clock. Huo Jianan remembered her appointment with Doctor Jiang from the previous day. “Honey, when the driver comes, I won’t see you off. I need to go for a checkup.”
“Do you want me to come with you?” Ruan Nianning asked.
“No need. Butler He will accompany me.”
Ruan Nianning lowered her gaze, certain that Huo Jianan had something to do that she wanted to keep secret from her.
As soon as Huo Jianan left, Ruan Nianning followed. She saw Butler He push Huo Jianan into the elevator and watched it stop on the third floor. Turning sharply, Ruan Nianning dashed into the emergency staircase, her heels clicking urgently as she raced up to the third floor. She finally caught sight of Butler He’s retreating figure in the corridor.
Her eyes fixed on the person in the wheelchair, Ruan Nianning’s chest heaved slightly. She couldn’t tell if she was breathless from the hasty descent or from her clandestine pursuit. Either way, she had once again found herself playing the role of an undercover agent in a spy drama.
Ruan Nianning couldn’t help but smile wryly. What kind of checkup could Huo Jianan be getting? Why not just ask Butler He later? Why am I sneaking around like this?
She glanced at the corridor sign. This section housed the orthopedic department.
Is Huo Jianan here to have her legs examined?
Just as she was pondering this, she saw Butler He push Huo Jianan into the Third Consultation Room, and the door closed behind them.
Ruan Nianning hid at the entrance of the fire escape, her head tilted, long hair cascading down in loose waves that obscured most of her face.
Two nurses walked by and glanced at her, whispering to each other, “Is that Ruan Nianning? Her profile looks just like hers!”
“No way. Celebrities always wear sunglasses and masks when they’re out.”
Ruan Nianning: “……”
Once the nurses had passed, Ruan Nianning hurried past the Third Consultation Room, quickly glancing at the information plaque outside the door: Doctor Jiang Shumin.
After completing her examination, Huo Jianan slowly sat up from the equipment. Doctor Jiang Shumin reached out to help her down.
Huo Jianan smiled faintly, declining the offer. “Thank you, I can manage myself.” With that, she picked up her phone and maneuvered her wheelchair to the equipment. After adjusting the chair’s height, she braced her hands and smoothly transferred herself into the wheelchair.
“Doctor Jiang, will I ever be able to stand again?”
After reviewing the reports, Doctor Jiang Shumin said with regret, “Miss Huo, to be honest, you’ve already missed the optimal window for treatment and rehabilitation.”
Huo Jianan froze, looking at Doctor Jiang with confusion.
She couldn’t understand why the Huo Family, with its vast resources, would have missed the critical window for treatment.
“It’s possible that Miss Huo, due to certain circumstances, didn’t receive the most advanced medical treatment at the time. According to your medical records, four years have passed since the onset of your leg condition. While regaining the ability to stand isn’t entirely hopeless, it will require significant endurance and effort from you.”
Huo Jianan declared, “I’m not afraid of hardship! As long as I can stand again, I’m willing to endure any challenge!”
Jiang Shumin was slightly taken aback. She recalled Dean Zhang’s specific instructions when introducing Miss Huo as a patient: “The patient is quite self-conscious and has an extreme fear of pain. According to her grandmother, she spent two days and two nights alone in the wilderness before being rescued. It’s likely she endured tremendous suffering during that time, and we can’t rule out PTSD. When treating her, we should prioritize gentle approaches to avoid triggering her emotional distress.”
Yet the Miss Huo before her, despite her leg impairment, sat with her back ramrod straight, her eyes bright and full of vitality, radiating unwavering determination and strength.
Jiang Shumin found it difficult to reconcile this image with the description of a woman who had been disabled for four years, plagued by self-doubt, sensitivity, and a paralyzing fear of pain.
“Alright, let’s give it a try. I’ll develop a treatment plan for Miss Huo based on the latest research both domestically and internationally.”
Huo Jianan was overjoyed. “Thank you! Thank you, Doctor Jiang!”
Jiang Shumin smiled faintly. “The treatment process might be quite painful. Are you sure you’re up for it, Miss Huo?”
Huo Jianan nodded without hesitation. “I can handle it. As long as it can heal my legs, I’ll endure even bone-scraping pain.”
Jiang Shumin chuckled softly. “It won’t come to that. Then let’s meet again the day after tomorrow to finalize the treatment plan and begin.”
By the time they left Doctor Jiang’s office, it was nearly noon. Butler He pushed Huo Jianan back to her hospital room. The hospital corridor was bustling: some people were on phone calls, others hurried past, and some sat quietly in the waiting area.
Bright sunlight streamed through the windows, bathing half of Huo Jianan’s figure in its warm glow. Her slightly pale complexion appeared even fairer in the reflected light, radiating a soft, ethereal beauty.
Passersby couldn’t help but glance at her. The person in the wheelchair had striking, deep-set features and a captivating presence. Her dazzling aura suggested she was an Alpha, yet her delicate, fragile demeanor evoked the image of a pitifully beautiful Omega, stirring protective instincts in those who saw her.
This beauty, radiant as a flame yet gentle as melting snow, an Alpha with the temperament of an Omega, was truly a rare and exquisite sight. Who could resist stealing a second glance?
Huo Jianan was in high spirits, her bright eyes shining with warmth and purity. “Butler He, did you know? There’s a chance I might be able to stand again.”
Butler He was overjoyed. “Really, Miss? That’s wonderful news! The Old Madam will be absolutely thrilled when she hears this—over the moon!”
“Let’s not tell Grandma yet, or Sister Meng, or the Young Mistress. I want to surprise them.”
Butler He hesitated. “Are you sure you don’t want to tell them?”
“If we tell them now, there won’t be any surprise. When my legs are truly healed, I want to stand before them and tell them myself.”
Butler He imagined the scene: the Old Madam’s utter delight, Miss Meng’s excitement, and the Young Mistress’s joy.
“So, Butler He, please keep it a secret for now, okay? Otherwise, the surprise will be ruined.”
Huo Jianan gazed at him imploringly, her wide, innocent eyes nearly melting his heart.
How could anyone resist that?
Butler He hesitated for only two seconds before relenting. “Alright, Miss, we’ll do as you wish and not tell them for now.”
“Haha, thank you, Butler He!”
Butler He smiled warmly. Seeing Miss Huo so genuinely happy made her feel joyful too.
She pushed Huo Jianan’s wheelchair into the elevator, rode up to the seventh floor, and then exited. The two cheerfully made their way down the corridor toward the hospital room. Midway, they encountered a man in a white coat, his temples streaked with gray, likely in his fifties.
Butler He stopped and greeted him respectfully, “Good day, Dean Zhang!”
So this was Dean Zhang.
Huo Jianan also chimed in with a greeting.
“Ah, Miss Huo, how are you feeling? You look much better today.”
After a brief exchange of pleasantries, Dean Zhang turned to leave, but not before reminding Butler He, “How is Old Madam Huo’s health? At her age, her heart is bound to have some issues. It’s crucial to avoid any excitement, anger, or emotional stress. And always keep her emergency medication close by.”
Butler He replied, “Thank you, Dean Zhang.”
As Dean Zhang’s figure receded down the corridor, Huo Jianan asked quietly, “Butler He, does Grandma have heart problems?”
Butler He sighed. “Madam originally didn’t want me to tell you, but since Dean Zhang has already mentioned it, I won’t keep it from you. Last year, Madam experienced angina and went to the hospital for a check-up, where she was diagnosed with heart disease. Dean Zhang advised her to avoid getting too agitated and prescribed medication for her to take when she felt unwell, as well as emergency medication to carry at all times. Madam didn’t want you to worry, so she forbade us from telling you.”
Butler He glanced at Miss Huo, hesitated for a few seconds, and finally continued, “Do you remember when you went on a hunger strike and argued fiercely with Madam to marry the Young Mistress? That night, Madam suffered a heart attack. It was only thanks to the emergency medication that she… that she pulled through.”
“Miss, could you… please try not to argue with Madam like that again?” Butler He asked cautiously, carefully choosing his words as he nervously watched Huo Jianan. “Madam only has you as her granddaughter. She cares about you more than anyone else in the world and wants nothing more than to see you happy. But she’s always been strong-willed, and now she’s over seventy years old…”
Huo Jianan nodded solemnly. “I’m sorry. I’ll be more careful in the future.”
Butler He was both surprised and relieved. He had expected Miss Huo to throw a tantrum, to pinch her own arm in agitation, and to cry out indignantly, “I didn’t do anything wrong! Why is this my fault?”
“Miss, you’ve really changed so much since you got married.”
“Really? How so?”
“It’s like you’ve grown up overnight, become more mature, almost a different person.”
Huo Jianan smiled faintly. “Well, people have to grow up eventually, don’t they? It’s not surprising.”
Just like the Earth’s rotation or the inevitability of rain, some things are unavoidable. Whether you grow up or not is beyond your control.
Ruan Nianning: Huo Jianan is definitely hiding something from me. Secretly following her now.
