- Chapter 16 - I Said It Before, I Sincerely Hope You Can Be Happy
Ruan Nianning plopped down, letting out a long sigh of relief. Finally, she could rest for a moment and relax.
To buy all the trending pastries Huo Jianan wanted, she had rushed to several locations and waited in long lines. Even though she wore a mask and sunglasses, completely covering herself, she still attracted plenty of attention from sharp-eyed passersby.
“Is that Ruan Nianning?”
“No way. Ruan Nianning is a huge star. Why would she personally wait in line for cake?”
“Didn’t she just marry into the wealthy Huo Family a few days ago and become the young mistress of a wealthy family?”
“I heard Miss Huo is lame.”
“Ah, my goddess Consort Ning! She’s so beautiful, she could have any Alpha she wants. Why would she marry a cripple?”
Ruan Nianning’s fans affectionately called her Consort Ning because they shipped her with Song Shiyu, the Grand Slam-winning actress.
Even though both were Omegas, some fans insisted on crowning Ruan Nianning as one of Song Shiyu’s harem members—the alluring Consort Ning. The two women found the whole thing absurd, but Empress Song’s fans were thrilled, Consort Ning’s fans were happy to ship it, and their agencies were happy to capitalize on the hype, so Ruan Nianning simply ignored it.
In the past, Huo Jianan had been quite jealous of this relationship. It wasn’t until she met Song Shiyu and got to know her that she realized Ruan Nianning had always seen Song Shiyu as a beloved older sister, just as Meng Xi’en was to Huo Jianan. Only then did Huo Jianan finally stop being jealous and start calling Song Shiyu “Sister Song.”
“So what if she’s disabled? She’s Miss Huo, from the Huo Family—real high society! A leg injury doesn’t prevent marking. Besides, Miss Huo is stunningly beautiful!”
“I’ve seen Huo Jianan’s photos—she’s truly gorgeous! That sickly, delicate beauty, that frail helplessness… it just tugs at my heartstrings! Ugh, it’s so my type!”
The group erupted in giggles. Ruan Nianning faintly overheard them saying, “Huo is an Alpha, so she’s definitely the one on top… With her sickly, delicate nature, maybe Consort Ning is the one dominating…”
Ruan Nianning: “……”
Have fans’ imaginations really gotten this wild? They’re already fantasizing about my wife-wife life for me?!
Surrounding her were lush green plants adorned with delicate blossoms, cleverly screening her from passersby and creating a relatively private space.
Ruan Nianning ordered a coffee at the upscale café. Soon, a server arrived with her drink, presented in exquisite, meticulously crafted tableware. The coffee’s unique aroma drifted through the air.
Ruan Nianning picked up her coffee, inhaled its aroma, took a small sip, and slowly set the cup down. She absently twirled the delicate handle, lost in thought.
She was “missing” Huo Jianan again, involuntarily thinking of the woman who had become so different after their marriage—the Huo Jianan whose memory loss remained uncertain.
Her beautiful brows furrowed unconsciously, and a rare cloud of doubt clouded her striking phoenix eyes.
Ruan Nianning had been pondering: What exactly had happened to Huo Jianan? She had become so unlike herself.
Just then, her phone rang. Ruan Nianning picked it up from the table, her eyes lighting up at the caller ID. With a gentle swipe, she answered the call.
“Sister Song! What are you doing calling me? Aren’t you starting filming your new drama soon?”
The caller was none other than Song Shiyu, the Grand Slam-winning actress and Ruan Nianning’s close friend.
“I just finished a script discussion with the director and lead actors of the new drama,” the usually aloof actress said, her voice softening into a warm, sisterly tone. “How are you, Nianning? How’s married life treating you? Are you doing okay?”
“I’m fine, really. Jianan lets me do whatever I want. But Jianan… she’s not doing so well. She hit her head and suffered a brain hemorrhage. She’s been in the hospital for days.”
“Is she going to be okay? Brain hemorrhages can be serious.”
“Don’t worry, the Huo Family is renowned. With the best hospitals and doctors, what could possibly go wrong?”
Song Shiyu detected the perfunctory tone in her voice. “Nianning, what’s wrong? You’ve always wanted to marry Miss Huo, haven’t you? I know she has a bit of a princess attitude, but that’s probably just because she grew up in luxury and has high standards. It’s not like she’s deliberately targeting anyone. She genuinely cares for you.”
Ruan Nianning raised an eyebrow, recalling the countless times Huo Jianan had been paranoid, hysterical, and maliciously slanderous during their two-year courtship. That was far more than just a “princess attitude.”
A cold smile flickered across Ruan Nianning’s face. “Sister Song, I’ll be honest with you. My feelings toward her and her family aren’t what you think.”
“Nianning, what’s wrong? What are you planning?”
Ruan Nianning paused, snapping out of her daze and reverting to her usual cheerful demeanor. “What could I possibly be planning? Maybe I’m just bored after a few days of being a pampered heiress. I’ve been good to Jianan, haven’t I? I practically ran all over Changbin today buying her that trendy cake. Sister Song, are you in Changbin? I could bring you a slice. It’s all the rage—I waited in line for two hours!”
Song Shiyu chuckled softly. “Cake for me? Thank you! Good thing I’m not in Changbin.”
After a moment of laughter, Song Shiyu said, “Now I’m not sure if I should even invite you.”
“What’s up, Sister Song? Just tell me. We’re close, right?”
“The other female lead for this historical drama had an accident. The crew is scrambling to find a replacement, and I thought you’d be perfect for the role. That’s why I called. But now that you’re married into the Huo family, I doubt you’d have the time…”
Ruan Nianning cut her off excitedly before she could finish. “Is it With You, My Lord?”
“Yes, that’s the one. The script is excellent, and Director Zhang is the overall director.”
“I’m in!” Ruan Nianning gripped her phone tightly, her heart pounding faster and faster in her ears. “I’m in!”
Before dinner, Ruan Nianning returned to the hospital early, carrying several bags of cakes and pastries. She had a feeling that the Huo Jianan she knew before their marriage would never have allowed her to take on a filming project. But the Huo Jianan she knew now might be different—perhaps this version would actually agree.
“Jianan, would you like to try another bite of this flavor?”
In the hospital room, Huo Jianan was seated in a wheelchair as Ruan Nianning spoon-fed her, one bite at a time, like a gentle and obedient young wife doting on her partner.
“Jianan, is it good?” Ruan Nianning asked with her sweetest, most tender smile. “How about trying the durian flavor next?”
Huo Jianan pushed away the spoon Ruan Nianning offered again, her face creased with worry. “No more, I can’t eat another bite.”
“Alright, I’ll give it to Butler He to share with Sister Wang, Sister Mei, and the nurses.” Ruan Nianning set down the cake, pulled out a tissue, and carefully wiped Huo Jianan’s lips.
Her soft fingers brushed deliberately across Huo Jianan’s full lips, the tip of her pinky gently hooking at the corner of her mouth, sending a peculiar ripple across the snow-white skin. Huo Jianan’s face flushed crimson as she turned her head away. “I… I can do it myself.”
Ruan Nianning had noticed that Huo Jianan had grown increasingly shy since their marriage, blushing at the slightest provocation. Even a small, suggestive gesture could leave her flustered.
This version of Huo Jianan was far more vibrant and intriguing than the woman she had known before.
Ruan Nianning cleared her throat. “Jianan, I wanted to talk to you about something.”
“Go ahead,” Huo Jianan said, pulling a tissue to slowly wipe her mouth.
“Was what you said yesterday true?”
“What do you mean?”
“You said I could keep acting?”
As Ruan Nianning spoke, her gaze remained fixed on the woman in the wheelchair, her breath catching in her throat, terrified Huo Jianan might suddenly change her mind.
“Yes, that’s right,” Huo Jianan replied, meticulously wiping her mouth. “As long as it’s not too revealing, you can act as much as you want.”
A loud smack echoed as Ruan Nianning planted a kiss on her cheek.
Hugging Huo Jianan’s neck, Ruan Nianning grinned widely. “Thank you!”
Seeing her so happy, Huo Jianan smiled in return.
Ruan Langlang was, after all, a young woman in her twenties, brimming with youthful energy and a longing for freedom, just like any other girl her age.
I’ve finally done something that truly makes her happy.
“But what if Grandma doesn’t approve?”
“I’ll talk to Grandma. My support isn’t just empty words.” Huo Jianan raised an eyebrow with a confident smile. “Don’t worry, I’ll convince her. You’ll definitely get to keep acting.”
For the first time, Ruan Nianning looked at Huo Jianan up close without hatred. She realized her eyes were beautiful, like the sea—calm yet deep, especially when she smiled, sparkling like sunlit waves on a winter day.
Huo Jianan barely touched her dinner. She’d had a generous slice of cake that afternoon and wasn’t hungry. The table laden with delicious dishes was all for Ruan Nianning.
As Ruan Nianning chatted about her filming schedule, Huo Jianan kept piling food onto her plate, surprisingly choosing all her favorite dishes.
“How did you know I love peas?” Ruan Nianning asked.
“You always eat the peas I put in your bowl the fastest. You must really like them.”
Ruan Nianning blinked, stunned. When did Huo Jianan get so observant?
Seeing her frozen expression and slightly puffed cheeks, Huo Jianan found her utterly adorable, like a little hamster. She added a piece of chicken-broth-braised radish to her plate.
“Ruan Langlang, it’s good to eat radish in winter.”
Ruan Nianning turned her head sharply. “What did you just call me? Ruan Langlang?”
Huo Jianan froze.
Damn it! She’d been so mesmerized by Ruan Nianning’s cuteness that she’d let slip her nickname.
“Mm, I just think you look especially adorable when you eat, like a fluffy little wolf cub, Ruan Langlang.”
Ruan Nianning, still chewing on a piece of radish, looked puzzled. “Why Langlang specifically?”
As Huo Jianan ladled soup for her, her mind raced.
“Calling you ‘Maomao’ would be too ordinary, ‘Gougou’ sounds a bit too fawning, ‘Qiuqiu’ doesn’t suit your figure, and ‘Maomao’ lacks the right presence. ‘Langlang’ fits you perfectly. Imagine a lone alpha wolf in the snow, its fur sleek, gleaming, and radiating authority. Just standing there, it exudes regal dominance, a sense of ruling the world. Doesn’t that perfectly capture the character you’re playing? If you didn’t possess that alpha wolf’s cold, commanding aura, Sister Song wouldn’t have approached you in the first place, would she?”
Huo Jianan, thinking on her feet, spun a convincing tale. She’d never been this articulate in her entire life, not even in her past life.
Ruan Nianning nodded in deep agreement, swallowing the radish. “I agree. ‘Langlang’ sounds much better than ‘Maomao’ or ‘Qiuqiu.’ Let’s go with Ruan Langlang.”
Huo Jianan beamed as she handed Ruan Nianning the bowl of soup. “Here you go, Langlang. Have some soup.”
After clearing away dinner, while the Young Mistress bathed the Miss, Sister Wang and Sister Mei brought out the cake Ruan Nianning had given them.
Sister Wang: “This is delicious! No wonder the Young Mistress said she queued for two hours.”
Sister Mei: “So good… This is real food! That Propolis Bun this morning was ridiculously expensive! I thought it would be amazing, but oh my god, how could anything taste so awful?! Even pigs wouldn’t eat it!”
Sister Wang: “Who knows? We can’t understand the tastes of the rich.”
In the bathroom, Ruan Langlang finally stopped harassing Huo Jianan like a lecherous lone wolf. She diligently helped bathe her, then quickly showered herself. After coming out, she made a flurry of calls—to Actress Song, her manager, her assistant…
Huo Jianan was completely sidelined.
Watching Ruan Langlang’s animated expressions and boundless energy, Huo Jianan smiled naturally. Her eyes sparkled with confidence, radiating an inner beauty that shone through. In that moment, she was dazzling, fiery, and more captivating than ever before.
Huo Jianan smiled inwardly. She could tell that Ruan Langlang had finally let go of her hatred, radiating a carefree and vibrant energy—the true Ruan Nianning.
“Yeah, it should be fine. My family agreed, so joining the production on schedule shouldn’t be a problem,” Ruan Nianning said into her phone, brushing a stray strand of hair away from her eyes with her free hand.
Sensing a lingering gaze fixed on her, Ruan Nianning turned to look.
Huo Jianan was lying on the bed, staring at her with a smile. There was no hint of desire in her eyes, only pure admiration, as if she were seeing Ruan Nianning for the first time.
Ruan Nianning waved her hand in front of Huo Jianan’s face. “Why are you staring at me like that?”
Huo Jianan startled, her face flushing crimson all the way to her ears.
Oh my god! I was staring at Ruan Langlang and got caught red-handed!
“N-nothing,” Huo Jianan stammered, quickly lying back down as if trying to hide something. “I’m going to sleep now.”
Ruan Nianning’s lips curved into a smile. She hurriedly said into her phone, “I’ll talk to you later. I’ll let you know if there’s any news.” After hanging up, she lifted the covers and climbed into bed.
The lights went out, and the enveloping darkness added a layer of tranquility to the hospital room.
Huo Jianan lay flat, her breathing even. Now that she had relaxed, the heat in her face had subsided.
In the darkness, a soft hand slipped beneath the covers and grasped hers, its delicate, smooth touch sending a fresh wave of heat surging through Huo Jianan’s face.
Ruan Nianning: “Are you asleep?”
“No.”
“Jianan, why did you let me go act?”
Huo Jianan smiled faintly. “Have you forgotten? I told you I genuinely want you to be happy.”
She felt a sharp pain in her wrist as the other woman gripped it tightly, her nails digging into her flesh.
Huo Jianan bit back a cry.
But then the grip slowly loosened, and Ruan Nianning leaned closer, pressing herself against Huo Jianan’s arm like a soft, little wolf cub.
Huo Jianan’s lips curved into a smile. She reached out and patted the hand clinging to her arm. “Sleep now, Langlang.”
Ruan Nianning closed her eyes, the corners of her mouth lifting. “Mm.”
Ruan Langlang pressed another kiss onto Huo Xiaotu!
Huo Xiaotu: “Wait, honey, why are you kissing me again?”
Ruan Langlang: “I’m happy~~~”
