My Black Moonlight Wife Says She Loves Me - Chapter 4
Ruan Nianning’s calm gaze suddenly trembled, a tempest brewing in her eyes. Huo Jianan clearly saw the hesitation and doubt flickering within them.
Due to length constraints, the original novel’s epilogue didn’t delve into the specifics of Ruan Nianning’s feud with the Huo Family, merely mentioning that Huo Jianan’s mother had caused Ruan Nianning’s mother’s death.
After marrying into the Huo Family, Ruan Nianning endured Huo Jianan’s intimate advances, suppressing her disgust and intense hatred as she allowed herself to be marked. She did this solely to make Huo Jianan infatuated with her, to gain her trust, transforming herself into a lurking lone wolf—fawning in public while plotting betrayal in private.
Her close friend, a renowned actress, had warned her not to let hatred blind her, not to lose her reason by sinking into the mire of vengeance. But Ruan Nianning refused to listen, stubbornly pursuing her course. She urged Huo Jianan to take over the Huo Corporation, pushed her into a series of absurd and childish decisions, and openly defied Grandma Huo, alienating everyone. She successfully drove Grandma Huo to her death, then cruelly revealed the truth to Huo Jianan: that she had never loved the “useless” woman, that she had only ever used her for revenge!
After learning the truth, Huo Jianan jumped off Changbin Bridge, taking her own life.
Even her friend, who had read the book with her, said, “Have you read it? If not, don’t bother—it’s a heart attack! So brutal! How could Sister Ning, who’s so beautiful, cool, smart, and capable, turn into a psycho? I hate Huo Jianan, but come on, she’s just disabled! Does she really need to throw tantrums all day? She’s an heiress! She’s been miles ahead of us since birth! Even though her temper is unbearable, she genuinely loved Sister Ning. In the end, she lost everything—her family, her life… It’s actually quite tragic. Sister Ning must have felt utterly hopeless to jump off that building. Ugh, I need to demand the author write an extra chapter!”
In the hospital room, sunlight filtered through the curtains, while a soft, snow-white lamp glowed at the bedside. The two women locked eyes, each lost in their own thoughts.
Ruan Nianning was the first to recover. “Jianan, what’s wrong? How could I ever deceive you? Don’t overthink things. The doctor said you have a brain injury and need plenty of rest and quiet.”
Huo Jianan stared at her intently. “Wife, do you really love me?”
Ruan Nianning subtly avoided Huo Jianan’s gaze as she pulled up the blanket. “Of course I love you.”
Huo Jianan scoffed inwardly. You just said you wouldn’t lie to me, and now you’re already doing it.
Footsteps approached the door, followed by a cheerful voice: “Aunt Xu, don’t worry! The doctors said Jianan’s surgery was a complete success. She might even be awake by now.”
The door opened, and Grandma Huo entered the room, supported by a young woman.
The woman wore a tailored, high-end suit and appeared to be in her late twenties. Confident and poised, she had long, straight black hair that cascaded down her back, fair skin, and flawless makeup. Her smile was warm and genuine as she spoke to Grandma Huo with a familiar, lively tone.
Who is this? Huo Jianan wondered.
“Madam has arrived, and Miss Meng is here,” Sister Wang and Sister Mei announced respectfully, rising from their seats by the door.
“Is the young lady awake?” Grandma Huo asked.
“Yes, the Young Mistress is taking care of her inside.”
Hearing the voices, Ruan Nianning went to open the door. “Grandma, Sister Meng.”
“How is Nannan doing?”
“She’s awake now. Her headache is gone, and she even went to the bathroom earlier.”
Grandma Huo hummed noncommittally and turned to her granddaughter.
“Grandma,” Huo Jianan called out, propping herself up on her hands. Ruan Nianning moved to help her sit up, but someone was quicker.
Miss Meng had already wrapped an arm around Huo Jianan’s back, helping her sit up and tucking two pillows behind her. “Jianan, you look much better! You’re recovering well. How are you feeling? Any discomfort?”
Huo Jianan smiled politely. “I’m fine, no discomfort at all.”
“Honestly, how did you manage to crack your head open at your own wedding? Did you finally marry the person you’ve always dreamed of, and the wish coming true made you too excited?” Miss Meng teased, gently stroking Huo Jianan’s head like a caring older sister, being careful of the gauze wrapped around her head.
Having never experienced such a tender head pat before, Huo Jianan felt a little embarrassed and ducked her head under the covers.
“Married already, and still so shy?” Miss Meng teased.
“Your Sister Meng came to visit, and you don’t even greet her properly,” Grandma Huo chided.
Huo Jianan quickly complied. “Sister Meng.”
Grandma Huo asked with concern, “You should rest well in the hospital these next few days. Nianning, you stay here and take care of her.”
Ruan Nianning replied, “Yes, Grandma. I’ll make sure Jianan is well taken care of.”
Grandma Huo said coldly, “I hope you mean what you say. The doctor said Nannan’s head injury was from a fall. I don’t want this to happen again.”
Ruan Nianning pressed her lips together, her expression remaining respectful. “I didn’t notice Jianan in time. I promise this will never happen again.”
Grandma Huo glanced at her. “Just understand that.”
Miss Meng stepped forward, smiling. “Aunt Xu, you’re being too harsh on the new bride. Jianan will feel bad seeing this.”
Grandma Huo couldn’t help but retort, “How am I being harsh? I’m just telling her that now she’s part of the Huo Family, she needs to focus on taking care of Nannan.”
“Aunt Xu, we know you mean well and that you’ve always doted on Nannan. But she’s married now, with her own aspirations and plans. I trust Nianning will take good care of her. Look how well they match! In a few years, you’ll be holding your great-grandchild.”
“I’m already 75,” Grandma Huo said, “I doubt I’ll live to see that day.”
“Aunt Xu, what are you saying? You must live to be a hundred! The Huo Family’s vast empire still relies on you.”
Grandma Huo sighed softly. “Xi’en, let’s go home.”
“Alright, Aunt Xu,” Sister Meng replied. She turned back to Huo Jianan and made a playful face before following Grandma Huo out.
Xi’en! Meng Xi’en!
Huo Jianan stood frozen, like a wooden statue. This was her first time meeting Sister Meng, who clearly exuded the aura of a seasoned professional—sharp, capable, and efficient. Earlier, she had shown Huo Jianan the warmth of an elder sister, even speaking up for her and Ruan Nianning. Huo Jianan had instantly taken a liking to her.
If only she weren’t Meng Xi’en.
“Meng Xi’en, Meng Xi’en…”
Wasn’t she the Huo Family’s adopted daughter, the mastermind who had colluded with Ruan Nianning to embezzle the family’s wealth and ruin Huo Jianan’s life?
When reading about her, Huo Jianan had imagined Meng Xi’en as a taciturn, humorless woman with a cold, calculating demeanor and eyes like a venomous snake. She never expected her to be so approachable, friendly, considerate, and articulate.
Ruan Nianning, hearing Huo Jianan repeatedly murmur Meng Xi’en’s name, grew curious. “What’s wrong, Jianan? Do you need to talk to Sister Meng?”
Huo Jianan suddenly recalled the comments readers had left on the original novel. Some had even shipped Meng Xi’en and Ruan Nianning as a couple, and many had liked those comments.
This had infuriated her friend, who had ranted, “Can’t my Sister Ning just be beautiful and independent? Even if she doesn’t love Huo Jianan, why pair her with such a villainous scumbag?! This is so damn melodramatic! What about my lesbian heart?! No way! I’m leaving a comment for the author demanding an official pairing!”
Huo Jianan smirked, glancing at Ruan Nianning with a teasing smile. “What do you think of Sister Meng? Isn’t she wonderful?”
Ruan Yuning nodded. “Yes, she’s lovely—witty and graceful. She really does seem like your older sister.”
Huo Jianan: “……”
For a moment, it felt like a vast green prairie had sprouted on her head.
If Ruan Nianning divorced her, Huo Jianan wouldn’t care who she loved or dated; that would be her freedom.
But as long as they remained married, with Ruan Nianning still her wife, Huo Jianan couldn’t just stand by.
She might be disabled, but she refused to be a cuckold.
Huo Jianan: My wife might be cheating on me? No, no, no!
