- Chapter 20 - Getting more and more reckless
Ding Chen quickly became familiar with Qiu Yanzhen’s group. At first, she was often invited by Qiu Yanzhen to join them for lunch. Ding Chen wasn’t particularly shy; she just didn’t like to take the initiative. Gradually, she blended in. Occasionally, during breaks, she would also take the initiative to chat with them for a few minutes. Upholding the principle of fairness, Qiu Yanzhen also approached Zhou Qian’an. She didn’t refuse, but she often read and ate quietly by herself. She rarely joined the topic, let alone after class, and took root in her seat.
It seems that the silent gaze at the bus stop that day unlocked some switch in Qiu Yanzhen, and she has been getting more and more reckless lately. Originally, the things they did secretly when there were no acquaintances around started to be moved into the school one by one. At first, it was just holding her hand while changing classrooms, then leaning on her during chats after class, and hugging her whenever they had the chance.
For example, right now.
Today there are no club activities, and it’s self-study time in Ding Chen’s class. The students are scattered, some have gone to the library, and others have disappeared who knows where. There’s one more midterm exam before the graduation trip. Qiu Yanzhen is leaning against Ding Chen, holding a handout. Ding Chen is also holding a handout but can’t concentrate on reading. The warmth from the left side of her body, which doesn’t belong to her, makes her restless. Qiu Yanzhen’s hair was really scratching. Her neck felt a little itchy, she sat upright and didn’t dare to move, her eyes fixed on the words in the handout.
“Yanzhen, do you know how to solve this problem?” A girl stood by Qiu Yanzhen’s desk holding the exam paper, pointing at a circled question on the paper. Two other people were also gathered around, and the three of them had been discussing for a long time without finding an answer, so they came to seek help.
“Let me take a look.” Qiu Yanzhen got up from Ding Chen, took the pen handed to her by the girl, and started solving the problem.
Temporarily freed, Ding Chen quietly moved her shoulders and changed her sitting position. She seized the time to clarify the unclear parts of the handout. By the time she put down the handout, Qiu Yanzhen still hadn’t solved the problem. She frowned slightly, buried her head in writing furiously, curious about what kind of problem was so difficult. Ding Chen leaned over to take a look, but before she could see clearly, Qiu Yanzhen raised her head excitedly said: “I know”
Then, she quickly wrote the equations on a blank piece of paper and began explaining them to the trio waiting at the table. Her voice was gentle and soft, and even after explaining two or three times, she showed no signs of impatience. She even tried several different methods to help those who didn’t understand. Ding Chen leaned slightly behind her, glancing at her equations and then stealing a look at her serious profile. A few unruly strands of hair fell across Qiu Yanzhen’s face, but she was so focused on the topic that she really didn’t care. Ding Chen looked at it and couldn’t help but to reach out her hand to tuck Qiu Yanzhen’s hair behind her ears.
The sudden unfamiliar sensation on her ear made the person who had been speaking so confidently stumble for a moment, but she quickly pretended to be unfazed and continued talking. However, her flushed ears betrayed her. Ignoring the three pairs of eyes staring at her from across the table, Ding Chen leaned back in her chair, picked up her handout to cover her face, and pretended to continue reading.
The three people didn’t stay surprised for long and soon refocused on Qiu Yanzhen’s explanation. Before long, they all looked enlightened, thanked Qiu Yanzhen, and returned to their seats.
Qiu Yanzhen picked up the handout and lay back down on Ding Chen. Ding Chen hesitated for a moment, then slightly straightened her body and gently pushed Qiu Yanzhen away. Qiu Yanzhen maintained her position without moving, only tilting her chin to look at her. Ding Chen lowered her head to look at the puzzled expression of the person lying in her neck and was about to speak when she heard the whispers of the three people who had asked questions earlier.
One person gasped and whispered to the person next to them, “They aren’t going to kiss, are they?”
“When did they become so close?”
The rest of the words were too quiet for Ding Chen to hear clearly, but the first two sentences were enough to make her feel embarrassed. Qiu Yanzhen obviously heard those people’s words as well and silently sat up. Ding Chen was quite curious if she, like herself, regretted impulsively helping her with her hair and regretted indulging in the desire to cuddle and read on her lap.
The two of them diligently read their books until class was over, without any further interaction or conversation. However, whether the class bell rang or not didn’t really matter to their class, since there was no teacher supervising them. Nevertheless, the noise of chatting and talking during break time did increase a bit, but it wasn’t too loud. Seeing that Qiu Yanzhen was still reading, Ding Chen stood up, stretched, and went to the corridor to stretch her muscles.
Probably because it had just rained yesterday, the weather today was refreshingly cool. A gentle breeze brushed against Ding Chen’s face as she lazily leaned against the outer wall and looked down. Many people were jogging and walking on the field, and some were sitting in the middle of the field chatting.
Ding Chen had been watching for quite a while, and feeling that she had rested enough, she stood up and prepared to head back to the classroom. At that moment, Qiu Yanzhen came out. Seeing Ding Chen leaning against the wall, she walked over and looked down with her.
Qiu Yanzhen, like Ding Chen just now, enjoyed the feeling of the breeze brushing against her face, then turned to Ding Chen and asked, “Shall we go for a walk?”
The clouds that were blocking the sun were slightly blown away, and a bit of sunlight fell on their faces. Qiu Yanzhen squinted slightly, pressed down her tousled hair, and with a smile at the corner of her mouth, leaned against the wall looking at Ding Chen, waiting for her answer.
Ding Chen didn’t have time to think; her body reacted first. She felt herself nodding, then her vocal cords vibrated, and she uttered a “good.”
