- Chapter 13 - Tricked by the "Sweeping Monk"?
After a night of discussion, An Ran and Sister Cat devised what they believed to be a comprehensive policy of benefits and care.
For benefits, they decided to entice the “Sweeping Monk” with gourmet food, allowing him to savor unique delicacies.
For care, An Ran would proactively take on some of the Sweeping Monk’s duties, helping him clean and organize the books on the shelves, effectively reducing his workload by more than half while also conveying warmth.
Both An Ran and Sister Cat were highly satisfied with this plan. They were confident that by implementing these benefits and care policies, the Sweeping Monk would be deeply moved and would willingly present the Phantom Cat Cultivation Manual with both hands.
However, ideals are often grand, while reality is often stark.
On the first day, An Ran arrived at the Yaoguang Peak cafeteria early, catching the first rays of dawn. She successfully snagged some freshly baked pastries from Granny Zhang and, filled with anticipation, delivered them to the Sweeping Monk.
As An Ran presented the pastries, her mouth watering, he casually picked up a piece, ate it, and remarked indifferently, “I actually prefer Aunt Li’s Osmanthus Cake from the Dragon Return Peak cafeteria.”
An Ran’s heart clenched at his words—such a cold and dismissive rejection! She forced herself to smile awkwardly.
Determined to take the initiative, she tried to help him sweep, but every time she reached for the broom, the Sweeping Monk effortlessly evaded her. Her attempts to snatch it only seemed to amuse him.
The Sweeping Monk stroked his snow-white beard, his expression serene as he gazed at An Ran. “Little girl,” he said, “even sweeping has its standards. You’re still far from meeting them!”
An Ran, who had been panting from her futile attempts to seize the broom, flushed with embarrassment. She silently fled the Scripture Pavilion and returned to Yaoguang Peak.
Back in her room, Sister Cat was idly reading a storybook An Ran had bought from the town below the mountain during her day off. If anyone saw this, they’d surely say the cat had become a spirit and learned to read!
An Ran slumped into a chair, picked up the teapot from the table, poured herself a full cup of tea, and drained it in one gulp. She then sat silently, her mood dark.
Sister Cat rose from her rocking chair, slowly climbed onto An Ran’s lap, and tilted her head. “What’s wrong? You’re so angry.”
An Ran slumped over the table, recounting the day’s events in detail to Sister Cat. After listening, Sister Cat paused, then fell into deep thought.
She reassured An Ran, “The ‘Sweeping Monk’ didn’t immediately sweep you out the door. This means he’s still observing you or giving you a chance. Keep trying!”
Hearing this, An Ran’s expression grew even more dejected. “So… should I go back tomorrow?”
“Of course you should!” Sister Cat declared firmly. “Don’t give up! Persistence is victory!”
The next morning, An Ran hurried to Aunt Li’s place on Dragon Return Peak, begging her to make Osmanthus Cake. Beaming with excitement, she carried the cake to the mysterious “Sweeping Monk.”
As she handed over the Osmanthus Cake, the “Sweeping Monk” accepted it with a slight nod. “Aunt Li’s Osmanthus Cake is indeed fragrant and delicious, melting in the mouth. However…”
An Ran stared at him expectantly.
The “Sweeping Monk” continued slowly, “Actually, I wasn’t particularly craving Osmanthus Cake today. I’d much rather try Aunt Zhao’s White Fungus and Lotus Seed Soup from Carefree Peak.”
An Ran’s lips twitched twice before she silently turned and dashed back to Aunt Zhao’s kitchen on Carefree Peak, patiently coaxing the woman to make her White Fungus and Lotus Seed Soup.
Her familiarity with these places stemmed from her insatiable appetite. She had already explored every dining hall on every peak.
Moreover, her youthful charm and adorable demeanor made her universally beloved. As a Personal Disciple of Yaoguang Peak, she received even more preferential treatment.
If not for her thick skin and ability to take a joke, she would have been kicked out of the dining halls long ago.
After much cajoling and persistent pleading, An Ran finally persuaded Aunt Zhao to make her a bowl of White Fungus and Lotus Seed Soup.
She carefully carried the bowl back to the Scripture Pavilion and offered it to the Sweeping Monk.
He took a sip, frowned slightly, and remarked slowly, “Aunt Zhao must be in a bad mood today. She skimped on the sugar.”
An Ran’s heart surged with irritation. That old geezer is so wicked! she thought, gritting her teeth. Suppressing her anger, she forced herself to appear calm and composed.
Today, An Ran didn’t rashly try to snatch the broom from the Sweeping Monk’s hand. She had already prepared a spare broom for herself.
Calmly retrieving the broom she had prepared overnight from her Storage Ring, An Ran respectfully addressed the Sweeping Monk: “Senior, allow me to assist you with sweeping!”
Before he could respond, she swiftly began working.
As An Ran dragged the broom—taller than herself—across the floor, dust immediately billowed into the air.
Carelessly, she let out a thunderous sneeze. The sneeze was so earth-shattering and ghost-shaking that even the disciples reading in the Scripture Pavilion hastily covered their noses and fled.
The Sweeping Monk covered his nose with one hand while forming a hand seal with the other. Instantly, the tables, chairs, benches, books, scrolls, and documents in the room were restored to spotless condition, as if the dust had never existed.
Watching the senior use magic to clean, An Ran couldn’t help but mutter to herself:Â If you can clean with magic, why do you spend all day wandering around the Scripture Pavilion with a broom? It makes absolutely no sense.
Still puzzled, An Ran returned to Yaoguang Peak with mixed emotions.
Sister Cat listened to An Ran’s grievances, finding the “Sweeping Monk” highly suspicious.
Her brow furrowed deeply as she asked, “Is this ‘Sweeping Monk’ playing us?”
On the third day, An Ran decided to take a different approach.
She woke up leisurely, washed up, and prepared food and water for Sister Cat.
Then, An Ran headed to the Yaoguang Peak dining hall and found Granny Zhang.
After much pleading and cajoling, she finally persuaded Granny Zhang to teach her how to make Rock Sugar Stewed Snow Pear.
Under Granny Zhang’s patient guidance, An Ran began preparing the ingredients. She carefully selected several fresh snow pears and retrieved high-quality rock sugar from the storage room.
With Granny Zhang’s meticulous instructions, An Ran successfully stewed a pot of sweet and delicious Rock Sugar Stewed Snow Pear.
She carefully carried the stewed dessert to Dragon Return Peak and found Eldest Senior Sister Gu Ruohan, who was reviewing account books.
“Eldest Senior Sister!” An Ran called out sweetly.
Hearing the enthusiastic greeting, Gu Ruohan’s hand trembled slightly as she held the account book.
An Ran looked up and saw Gu Ruohan standing before her, her eyes crinkling into a warm smile.
Gu Ruohan took a sip of the Rock Sugar Stewed Snow Pear An Ran had prepared and praised, “Hmm, the flavor is quite good. I didn’t expect you could make this.”
An Ran felt a surge of pride, though she kept her expression neutral.
She gazed at Gu Ruohan, wondering how to ask for help borrowing books.
Sensing An Ran’s hesitation, Gu Ruohan took the initiative. “Is there something you need?”
This was exactly what An Ran had hoped for. She quickly replied, “Eldest Senior Sister, could I ask for a favor?”
An Ran explained the situation with the Scripture Pavilion, emphasizing her deep interest in demon beast cultivation and her hope that Gu Ruohan could help her borrow some relevant books.
After hearing An Ran’s request, Gu Ruohan nodded slightly and said calmly, “I see. Junior Sister, return to your residence and wait. Once I’ve finished these trivial matters today, I’ll borrow the books tomorrow and deliver them to your quarters. Is that acceptable?”
An Ran’s face lit up with joy. “Thank you so much, Eldest Senior Sister!”
She sprang to her feet, her heart soaring with happiness, and skipped back to Yaoguang Peak.
The next day, An Ran woke up early, ate breakfast, and waited with Sister Cat at the courtyard gate for news from Gu Ruohan.
However, Gu Ruohan soon returned with disappointing news: she had been unable to borrow the book.
She explained that she had gone to the Scripture Pavilion, told the caretaker the book’s title, but the caretaker insisted the book didn’t exist in the pavilion. She had even checked the Third Layer herself and confirmed it wasn’t there.
An Ran was puzzled. She distinctly remembered seeing the book that day, yet Gu Ruohan claimed it was missing.
Something’s definitely fishy here! she thought. Could the Sweeping Monk be doing this on purpose?
At that moment, An Ran sat in the Scripture Pavilion, holding Sister Cat, watching the Sweeping Monk busy himself around the room. The more she observed, the more confused she became.
Despite having reached the seventh layer of the Qi Refining Stage, An Ran still wanted to sneak into the Scripture Pavilion at night.
Concerned for her younger sister’s safety, Sister Cat vehemently opposed the idea. She urged An Ran to remain calm, warning that impulsiveness was the devil.
