- Chapter 2 - Am I the Protagonist? Am I the Chosen One?
Within the Azure Mist Sect’s magnificent hall, An Ran stood clutching her cat, surrounded by a dense aura of spiritual energy that pulsed outward like waves.
She waited listlessly for the Sect Leader and Elders to conclude their discussion.
After being rescued by the dark-robed woman, Yun Hua, the woman had taken pity on An Ran’s loneliness and homelessness, and recognizing her exceptional aptitude for cultivation, brought her back to the sect.
“This child has excellent innate talent—a truly promising seedling,” Sect Leader Yun Zhi’s voice drifted through the hall, ethereal and distant.
He stroked his beard with a gentle smile. “Yun Hua, since you brought her here, you shall take her under your care and nurture her well.”
The other Elders nodded in agreement. Had it not been for Yun Hua’s claim, they would have undoubtedly vied for the girl themselves. After all, a promising seedling for cultivation was a rare and precious find.
An Ran remained silent, her head bowed as she stood behind True Person Yun Hua.
The cat Sister Cat was currently holding could only meow a few times, unable to speak human language.
To avoid revealing their secret, the two sisters had never dared to expose Sister Cat’s ability to speak.
In this unfamiliar and dangerous world, caution was paramount.
True Person Yun Hua nodded slightly and bowed to the Sect Leader. “Thank you, Sect Leader Brother.”
The assembly dispersed, leaving only Sect Leader Yunzhi, True Person Yun Hua, and Gu Ruohan, the Sect Leader’s personally trained chief disciple.
“Ruohan,” Sect Leader Yunzhi said earnestly, “Junior Sister An Ran has just arrived, and your Martial Uncle Yun Hua is quite busy. From now on, you must take special care of her and help her quickly familiarize herself with her surroundings. Do you understand?”
“Yes, Master,” Gu Ruohan replied respectfully, lowering her head.
An Ran gazed at Gu Ruohan, the chief disciple before her. Her appearance was breathtakingly beautiful, her skin as pale and smooth as jade. Her dark hair was neatly combed back and tied with a white ribbon, framing a refined and ethereal face.
Her aura was cool and refined, like a solitary orchid blooming in a secluded valley. Her voice, clear and melodious, resonated with a refreshing quality, like a spring of pure water on a summer’s day, its sound soothing to the soul.
An Ran stared at Gu Ruohan, lost in thought. Are all cultivators this beautiful? she wondered.
“Disciple, let me take you back to the peak to settle in,” True Person Yun Hua said with a smile.
She then summoned her Magic Treasure—a Flying Sword—and soared toward Yaoguang Peak with An Ran in tow.
Since being rescued from the forest by True Person Yun Hua, An Ran had traveled to the Azure Mist Sect aboard the Profound Heaven Ark. This was her first time riding a Flying Sword, and her heart felt like it was about to leap out of her throat, the sensation as thrilling as a roller coaster ride.
After a brief flight, they finally arrived at Yaoguang Peak.
True Person Yun Hua pointed to a room and said, “You’ll be staying here from now on.”
She then turned to a Servant who had been waiting nearby and instructed, “Prepare a set of clean clothes for her first. We’ll gradually acquire the rest of her daily necessities later.”
An Ran felt a surge of gratitude, silently vowing to remember her kindness.
After settling in, An Ran carefully carried Sister Cat into the house.
A refreshing scent filled the air. Just inside the door, a large bed draped with pristine white sheets dominated the room, which was spotless.
After placing the white cat on the bed, An Ran began to explore. Outside was a small courtyard planted with flowers and herbs, exuding an elegant charm.
She then carried Sister Cat into the bathroom.
The water in the bathroom was already warm, and all toiletries were provided.
As she bathed Sister Cat, An Ran thought, Is this my home now? From now on, I’m a Cultivator too!
After finishing the bath, An Ran placed Sister Cat by the bed, letting her groom herself.
Then she began to wash up herself.
After washing up, An Ran felt much refreshed.
The table was now laden with delicious dishes, their fragrant aromas wafting through the air, making An Ran unconsciously swallow.
The white cat leaped onto the table. “Sis, hurry and serve me some rice!”
An Ran glanced warily outside. An Lan reassured her, “Don’t worry, they’re long gone. My senses are even sharper as a cat—I can hear a pin drop and see in the dark.”
“Oh,” An Ran finally relaxed. She served the rice, carefully picked the bones out of the fish, and pushed the plate piled high with food toward An Lan.
An Lan’s eyes locked onto the food like a hungry wolf’s, staring intently at the feast before her.
Time to dig in!
An Ran watched An Lan devour the food ravenously and began eating herself.
“Sigh… what should we do now?” An Ran frowned, her face etched with worry as she ate.
“What else can we do? I told you, make the best of it,” Sister Cat said, sticking out her pink tongue to lick her lips, savoring the taste with a satisfied smack.
“We’re like headless flies right now, completely clueless,” An Ran said, sounding discouraged. “And when will you turn back into a human? I don’t even know if you’re considered a demon or a human here. What’s their attitude toward demons?”
“This is the Immortal Cultivation World—anything is possible!” Sister Cat’s eyes gleamed with mischief as they darted around. “We’re newcomers here, so we need to be extra careful. If those curious Otherworlders catch me and dissect me like a frog, we’ll be in real trouble.”
An Ran nodded thoughtfully, agreeing. “It seems we have a lot more to investigate. Your sudden growth earlier—that’s definitely not something an ordinary cat can do. We need to look into that mystery thoroughly later.”
Having finished her meal, Sister Cat sprawled across the table, belly up, exposing her soft white fur. “Ah! Finally, a proper meal!”
Staring at her little cat sister’s nonchalant expression, An Ran’s face was lined with exasperation. “Sis, how can you be so relaxed?!”
“Didn’t you hear? The Sect Leader said your natural talent is exceptional—you’re a promising seedling! You’re the protagonist, the chosen one!” Sister Cat stretched out a paw, licked it, and deftly flicked a stray morsel of meat into her mouth. “Oh, little sis, your big sis here is really looking forward to seeing what you can do!”
Just as An Ran was about to reply, Sister Cat suddenly bristled, her four paws tensing as she straightened her body and stared intently toward the door. In a low voice, she murmured, “Someone’s coming.”
Intrigued, An Ran couldn’t help but peer toward the entrance. She saw Granny Zhang, the servant, approaching with a small basket. The old woman set the basket down and pulled out a thick mattress and a delicately embroidered quilt—it was a tiny bed for Sister Cat!
Sister Cat settled comfortably into her custom-made nest, purring contentedly. She couldn’t resist letting out a few happy “meows.”
An Ran clasped her hands in a respectful bow to Granny Zhang, who returned the gesture with a warm smile before swiftly retreating.
An Ran slightly adjusted the cat bed, placing it just a step away from her own bedside. This would make it much easier to feed Sister Cat and change her water in the future.
After settling Sister Cat in, An Ran climbed into bed herself.
Having not rested properly for the past few days, she fell asleep almost immediately after lying down.
That night, Sister Cat’s eyes suddenly snapped open.
Her body felt restless and overheated, and she tossed and turned, unable to find a comfortable position to sleep.
Suddenly, a crimson light flashed in her eyes. She leaped out the window and darted toward the mountain behind the house with incredible speed.
As she ran, her form gradually expanded, transforming from a petite feline shape into a massive, demon beast-like creature. Under the cover of darkness, she raced deep into the forest until she vanished completely.
By dawn, as the sky began to lighten, Sister Cat had reverted to her adorable kitten form. She curled up in her little bed beside An Ran’s bed and quietly went back to sleep.
