- Chapter 3 - First Encounter with the Eldest Senior Sister
As dawn gradually broke, a faint, misty light filtered through the paper windows, casting a soft, pale glow across the room.
An Ran drowsily opened her eyes, stretched languidly, yawned, and slowly sat up.
Stepping out of her room, she saw True Person Yun Hua standing in the courtyard with her hands clasped behind her back. Her gaze was deep and distant, fixed on the azure sky, lost in thought.
An Ran hurried over and bowed respectfully. “Master, good morning.”
“Mm,” Yun Hua turned and nodded, gesturing toward the breakfast laid out on the stone table. “Eat your breakfast. It’s all prepared for you.”
An Ran sat down, ready to dig in, but noticed her master hadn’t moved. “Master, aren’t you eating?” she asked, puzzled.
Yun Hua raised her eyes and smiled faintly. “This master has already entered the state of bigu (grain avoidance). You eat.”
With that, she retrieved a gold-edged manual of Qi refinement techniques from her storage ring and placed it on the table.
“Today, this master must go to Azure Mist Main Peak. Your Eldest Senior Sister will come later to show you around and familiarize you with the sect grounds.”
“This manual will be yours from now on. I will teach you cultivation methods when I return this evening.”
“Alright,” An Ran replied, immediately standing up.
She clumsily bowed. “Thank you, Master! Safe travels!”
True Person Yun Hua chuckled softly and nodded before her figure gradually faded from the courtyard.
An Ran first used chopsticks to transfer the food to a separate plate, then stood up and carried the tray into her room.
By then, Sister Cat had awakened from her nap. She stretched languidly, her milky-white belly gleaming in the sunlight, and let out a lazy meow: “Water~”
An Ran walked over and poured a full bowl of tea, placing it on the floor. Yesterday, she had specifically asked Granny Zhang to prepare a large and small bowl, exclusively for Sister Cat’s meals.
Using chopsticks, An Ran carefully transferred each morsel from the plate into Sister Cat’s large bowl and set it before her.
Sister Cat’s morning treat had arrived! She began quietly savoring her delicious breakfast, pausing occasionally to drink some water or lick her food, her face radiating pure contentment. She ate with obvious satisfaction.
Watching Sister Cat intently devour her meal, An Ran smiled and remarked, “Look at you, you’re becoming more cat-like every day.”
Sister Cat didn’t take offense. She simply retorted, “I am a cat now, of course I’m cat-like! Don’t tease me, little sis, I’m trying to eat seriously here!”
“But you look so tired,” An Ran said, her voice filled with concern as she gazed at Sister Cat’s weary appearance.
Sister Cat shook her head silently, her eyes betraying her exhaustion. She raised a paw to rub her forehead, letting out a soft sigh.
“I can’t really explain it,” Sister Cat mumbled between bites of her food, “just feel achy all over. I’m going to rest properly today. No one better stop me!”
Eldest Senior Sister is coming later. Aren’t you going with me?
“Huh?!” Sister Cat’s eyes lit up as she turned to An Ran. “You mean that black-haired, straight-haired, emotionless little yandere?”
“Emotionless little yandere?” An Ran stared at Sister Cat. “Sis, what’s going on in that head of yours?”
“Nothing, sis!” Sister Cat licked her paw. “I just think she’s pretty. With that aloof look, she’s practically the black-haired, straight-haired heroine from an anime, right?”
An Ran thought for a moment, then nodded in agreement. “Yeah, she does look a lot like Touma Kazusa.”
“Wrong!” Sister Cat slapped her paw on the floor, quickly correcting her. “She’s more like Ayanami Rei!”
“Lan Yuan Yamei?” An Ran asked, her face full of confusion. “Who’s that? We’ve watched so many anime together, how come I don’t remember her? What weird stuff have you been watching behind my back again?”
“Cough, cough!” Sister Cat coughed, then playfully swatted An Ran with her paw. “No, it’s nothing weird! I just thought I heard someone… someone coming?”
With that, Sister Cat quickly burrowed into An Ran’s arms. An Ran carried her into the room, where they saw Gu Ruohan entering through the front door.
“Eldest Senior Sister,” An Ran greeted Gu Ruohan. The cat in her arms meowed at Gu Ruohan, stretched its small head toward her, and rubbed its nose against An Ran’s clothes.
Gu Ruohan glanced at An Ran, then focused her gaze on the cat in her arms. The cat’s pure white fur was soft and glossy, with a crimson mark between its eyes, making it utterly adorable. Even someone as aloof as Gu Ruohan felt an urge to pet it.
When Gu Ruohan’s eyes met hers, Sister Cat’s heart raced with panic, terrified of being exposed.
An Ran’s own heart pounded with anxiety, but she forced herself to maintain a calm facade.
At that moment, Gu Ruohan spoke slowly, her voice cool and clear. “Junior Sister, today I’ll take you to visit the various peaks.”
Gu Ruohan’s figure flashed, and she had already summoned her Flying Sword. Standing atop Ruo Xue, she said to An Ran, “Get on!”
An Ran stared at Ruo Xue, which radiated a chilling aura, and involuntarily shivered. Carefully cradling Sister Cat in her arms, she moved behind Gu Ruohan and whispered, “Thank you, Senior Sister.”
Sister Cat also trembled, burying her small head deeper into An Ran’s embrace. This sword is so cold!
A beam of sword light shot into the sky. An Ran held Sister Cat with one arm and clung tightly to Gu Ruohan with the other, her cheek pressed against Gu Ruohan’s back. Because the sixteen-year-old An Ran was quite short, her face just reached Gu Ruohan’s back.
Gu Ruohan felt the little imp behind her clinging tightly with one arm, her back pressed against her own. She noticed the girl’s breathing was a little hurried, the warm exhales carrying a hint of nervousness. “Don’t panic,” she said calmly.
“Senior Sister, please go slower,” An Ran said cautiously, tugging at Gu Ruohan’s sleeve as she watched the Flying Sword’s rapid ascent.
Upon hearing this, Gu Ruohan subtly slowed the Flying Sword to ease her Junior Sister’s fear. She then began explaining the Azure Mist Sect’s basic structure…
The Azure Mist Sect was situated atop Azure Mist Mountain, its three peaks—Dragon Return Peak, Carefree Peak, and Yaoguang Peak—forming a triangular formation.
The Sect’s main hall stood on Dragon Return Peak, with the Sect Leader’s residence perched at its summit. Inner Sect Disciples and the Sect Leader all resided on Dragon Return Peak, while Outer Sect Disciples cultivated on the mountain’s slopes.
The master of Dragon Return Peak was True Person Yunzhi, the Sect Leader, who had only one Personal Disciple: Gu Ruohan, the Azure Mist Sect’s Chief Senior Disciple. Carefree Peak housed two disciples: Senior Brother Li Chengfeng and Senior Brother Huo Shaoqi. The Azure Mist Sect had eight Elders, one of whom, the Second Elder, had a disciple named Senior Sister Lu Yunyan, a reclusive alchemy fanatic who spent her days researching elixirs.
As An Ran listened to Gu Ruohan’s explanation, she couldn’t help but calculate that the Azure Mist Sect had only five Personal Disciples in total.
The competition for Personal Disciple status must be fierce! she thought. Out of over a thousand Inner Sect Disciples and several thousand Outer Sect Disciples, there are only five Personal Disciples. I can’t believe Master Yunhua picked me up and made me a Personal Disciple right away! I’m so lucky!
“This is the academy where Inner Sect Disciples attend classes,” Eldest Senior Sister said, pointing to the building before them. “Personal Disciples are typically taught directly by their Masters and don’t need to attend regular classes. However, since you’ve just joined the sect, you’ll need to attend classes here for the first three months to familiarize yourself with the fundamental theories of cultivation.”
An Ran looked up at the academy’s sign: Azure Mist Academy, the four characters written in bold, vigorous calligraphy.
Gu Ruohan, noticing An Ran’s fixed gaze on the academy’s sign, said, “Junior Sister An, you’ll start attending classes here tomorrow.”
“Will Eldest Senior Sister still accompany me?” An Ran asked, her eyes filled with anticipation as she looked at Gu Ruohan.
“I can escort you to and from classes for the first few days. But once you’re familiar with the environment, you’ll have to come on your own,” Gu Ruohan replied, her tone tinged with helplessness as she looked at An Ran’s hopeful expression.
“Okay! Thank you, Eldest Senior Sister!” An Ran’s face lit up with joy, her clear, bright eyes brimming with gratitude and sincerity.
Sister Cat, nestled in An Ran’s arms, watched her expression with a mix of amusement and exasperation. Whenever my little sister wanted something, she’d give me that same innocent, harmless look, and my wallet would suffer a devastating blow.
Now, observing their interaction, Sister Cat finally realized just how toxic her younger sister truly was!
