- Chapter 4 - Senior Sister Takes Me on a Tour of the Scripture Pavilion
Next, Senior Sister introduced An Ran to the various departments of the sect, including the Scripture Pavilion, Treasure Pavilion, Discipline Hall, and Alchemy Pavilion. An Ran’s eyes lit up at the mention of these places, and she asked, “Senior Sister, could you take me to the Scripture Pavilion?”
“Of course,” Senior Sister replied with a slight nod. She summoned her Flying Sword with a wave of her hand, and the two quickly soared toward the Scripture Pavilion in the distance.
Before long, they arrived at the pavilion, a three-tiered structure with a grand hall on each level. Several disciples stood guard at the entrance of each hall.
The disciples guarding the first-floor hall merely glanced at the pair before allowing them to enter.
Inside the first-floor hall, towering rows of bookshelves stretched across the vast space, each shelf overflowing with a dazzling array of books. Manuals on cultivation techniques, martial arts, and various other disciplines filled the shelves, offering a bewildering variety of options.
An Ran couldn’t contain her excitement. “Senior Sister, what kind of books are these? What subjects do they cover?”
Senior Sister patiently explained the contents of the books, listing titles such as “Elementary Cultivation Techniques,” “Insights on Cultivation,” “Cultivation Notes,” “Insights on Array Formations,” “Insights on Talismans,” and “Alchemy Recipes.”
An Ran was stunned. She had never imagined that the cultivation world contained such a vast and diverse collection of books on immortal cultivation.
Senior Sister continued, “The bottom layer contains introductory cultivation manuals, cultivation notes, array formation insights, and talisman techniques. The upper two layers hold advanced medicinal formulas, alchemy techniques, and high-level array formations, cultivation methods, and talismans. However, these books are only accessible to Personal Disciples and cultivators at or above the Foundation Establishment Stage.”
An Ran felt a flicker of disappointment, but quickly perked up and asked excitedly, “What level of disciples can access the Second Layer?”
“The Second Layer requires Personal Disciple status and cultivation at or above the Nascent Soul Stage. It primarily houses precious cultivation manuals and insights from senior cultivators.”
“And the Third Layer?”
“The Third Layer is reserved for Chief Disciples and cultivators at or above the Divine Transformation Stage. It mainly contains rare medicinal formulas and rare books.”
An Ran couldn’t help but feel grateful for becoming a Personal Disciple, realizing she could at least access the first two layers.
After briefly exploring the first layer, An Ran headed straight to the Second Layer. Her gaze swept across the shelves until her eyes lit up. Among the books were titles like Classic of Strange Beasts and Seas, Record of Strange Tales of Demon Hunting, and Spirit Pet Cultivation Methods. It seemed this entire row was dedicated to books about demon beasts.
She quickly pulled out one of the books, Spirit Pet Cultivation Methods. The text was written in traditional Chinese characters, similar to those used during the Ming Dynasty, and not significantly different from modern simplified characters, making it easy to read. An Ran carefully studied the book, her heart racing with excitement. Perhaps she could find the answers she sought within these pages!
“I never expected you’d be interested in spirit pets, Junior Sister,” Gu Ruohan remarked.
“Huh? Spirit pets?” An Ran asked curiously.
“They’re demon beasts bound by a master-servant Spirit Pet Contract, becoming your spirit pets. They can enhance your combat abilities.”
“Oh, oh, like pets,” An Ran thought, recalling how pets in games helped their owners fight monsters and level up.
However, signing a Spirit Pet Contract with a demon beast wouldn’t suit her older sister. Once bound by such a contract, the demon beast would lose its original memories and become slavishly obedient—not the outcome An Ran desired.
“Senior Sister, are there demon beasts that can transform into human form?”
“Demon beasts transforming into humans? That requires centuries, even millennia, of cultivation, depending on their innate talent. With the Spiritual Energy on the Primordial Continent growing increasingly scarce, few demon beasts can reach such a level. Even among human cultivators, those who attain the Great Ascension Stage are exceedingly rare.”
An Ran listened with disappointment, and the ears of Sister Cat, nestled in her arms, drooped as well.
Nearby, an elderly man with a slightly hunched back was sweeping the ground with a broom. His hair was snow-white, his face deeply lined, and his eyes, though sharp, were somewhat dimmed.
He seemed intrigued by the “cat” in An Ran’s arms, occasionally turning his head to gaze at it with a curious expression. As he swept, his movements slowed unconsciously, as if deep in thought.
By the time they finished exploring the Azure Mist Sect, it was already afternoon. Gu Ruohan escorted An Ran back to Yaoguang Peak.
Gu Ruohan’s hair streamed behind her, her robes billowing gracefully as she stood atop her Flying Sword, her figure elegant and poised.
She swiftly carried An Ran across several mountain peaks before finally returning her to Yaoguang Peak.
“Junior Sister, rest well. I’ll come for you again tomorrow,” Gu Ruohan said before soaring away on her sword.
An Ran watched her beautiful retreating figure, Sister Cat still in her arms, and sighed at her graceful bearing.
An Ran deeply envied Gu Ruohan’s cultivation level, dreaming of one day reaching such heights herself.
Afterward, the two returned to their room.
An Ran paced anxiously back and forth, her brow furrowed. Finally, she stopped in front of Sister Cat and asked softly, “Sister, what should we do now? I feel like we need to find a way to turn you back into a human.”
Sister Cat, however, seemed unconcerned. “Actually, being a cat isn’t so bad. Things are pretty good as they are.”
Her words sounded more like self-reassurance than genuine contentment.
“Even if the chances are slim, we have to find a way,” An Ran declared resolutely.
“I’m so sleepy… I’m going to take a nap,” Sister Cat said, sauntering back to her cozy little nest. She yawned wearily and fell asleep the moment she lay down.
Last night’s dream had felt like a long journey. She had been running endlessly in her dream, as if she could never reach her destination.
The dream’s vividness was so intense that she could barely distinguish it from reality.
When she woke up, she felt utterly exhausted and drowsy all day, as if she hadn’t slept at all.
