- Chapter 7 - I Think I'm the Protagonist!
Another invigorating day dawned. An Ran stretched lazily, ate breakfast, prepared a day’s worth of food for Sister Cat, and set off, boarding Gu Ruohan’s Flying Sword to attend class.
Today’s lesson was Introduction to Alchemy. As An Ran watched the Alchemy Elder arrange bottles and jars on the platform, she couldn’t help but think, Isn’t this just chemistry class?
As a humanities student, An Ran couldn’t help but yawn…
After class, a student named Lu Ziqiao rushed over, sneering at An Ran. “Who do you think you are? An unknown newcomer in the Qi Refining Stage, stealing Senior Brother Zhao’s Personal Disciple position!”
An Ran had been packing up to leave. She stared blankly at the brash young man who had suddenly appeared and asked, “Who’s Senior Brother Zhao?”
Lu Ziqiao’s face flushed crimson with rage, his expression darkening to the color of pig liver. “You don’t even know Senior Brother Zhao?” he roared. “He’s the most outstanding Inner Sect Disciple! His cultivation is about to break through to the Golden Core Stage. He’s already mastered the fifth form of the Big Dipper Seven Stars Sword Technique. In the Sect Grand Tournament, if Senior Brother Zhao participates, he’ll sweep through the competition like a hot knife through butter! If he wins the tournament, he’ll undoubtedly become True Person Yun Hua’s Personal Disciple and a strong contender for future Peak Lord! Who do you think you are, you little nobody with no background, daring to stand in Senior Brother Zhao’s way?!”
An Ran rolled her eyes. These occasions always attracted attention-seeking clowns—it seemed you couldn’t escape such fools no matter where you went.
Suddenly, An Ran remembered the two Personal Disciples recently accepted by the Peak Lord of Carefree Peak. “Did you hear?” she said. “The Peak Lord of Carefree Peak accepted two Personal Disciples in a row!”
An Ran grinned, holding up two fingers and deliberately emphasizing the word “two.”
Lu Ziqiao blinked, as if he hadn’t heard correctly. “What?” he asked.
“Meaning, it’s not like each Peak Lord can only accept one Personal Disciple. It depends on the disciple’s aptitude and the Peak Lord’s mood. If your Senior Brother Zhao really has what it takes, my Master would accept him regardless of whether he’s already taken a disciple or not. And if he doesn’t want him, even if he hasn’t taken a disciple in eight hundred years, your Senior Brother Zhao still wouldn’t get a chance!”
“You—!” Lu Ziqiao pointed at An Ran, sputtering for a moment before finally managing to say, “You’re going too far!”
Enraged, Lu Ziqiao slammed his hand on the table and shouted at An Ran, “Don’t push your luck!”
Just then, a voice called out, “Enough, Junior Brother Lu. Don’t argue with Senior Sister An. Focus on cultivation—that’s the true path. Senior Sister An’s talent far surpasses mine…” Everyone turned to see Zhao Yunkai approaching.
Zhao Yunkai entered with a gentle, refined smile. He first bowed respectfully to An Ran. “Senior Sister An, Junior Brother Zhao Yunkai. I haven’t yet offered my congratulations.”
An Ran watched the person before her, the corner of her mouth twitching involuntarily. What a master of disguise, this Sheng Yubai Lian!
He wore a benevolent smile in public, yet behind the scenes, he manipulated others to fight his battles, then feigned impartiality by playing peacemaker—as if this would earn him favor!
“Senior Brother Zhao, stop defending her!” Lu Ziqiao continued to rant. “She’s only at the Qi Refining Stage! Why should she be called Senior Sister?!”
But no matter how much he protested, the Azure Mist Sect’s rules were clear: Personal Disciples always outranked Inner Sect Disciples. Regardless of seniority or age, Inner Sect Disciples were required to address Personal Disciples as Senior Brother or Senior Sister.
An Ran couldn’t stand it any longer. “Aren’t you at the Qi Refining Stage too?!” she retorted, glaring at Lu Ziqiao. “Are you practicing Cultivation Stage Discrimination? Don’t forget: thirty years east, thirty years west. Never underestimate a young person’s potential!”
Standing on a stool, An Ran surveyed the crowd and declared passionately: “Though my knowledge is limited, one day I will grasp the measure of heaven and earth, comprehend the boundless realm, and command the sun, moon, and stars to no longer obscure my vision. I will break free from the shackles of the cosmos, make all living beings understand my will, and dissolve all Buddhas and deities into smoke!”
The crowd stared in stunned silence, their eyes wide with shock as they gazed at An Ran standing on the stool.
This frail little girl certainly had a big mouth! The crowd exchanged glances and couldn’t help but whisper among themselves.
Standing there, An Ran felt her entire being swell with confidence, as if radiating a dazzling light.
She couldn’t help but recall the scenes from TV dramas where protagonists delivered such iconic lines with such flair. This is perfect! she thought.
She felt as if she had already become the main character, delivering the lines with such passion that everyone around her was stunned by her performance.
Meanwhile, a subtle darkness flickered in Zhao Yunkai’s eyes.
“Junior Sister, we should go now,” Gu Ruohan said, standing at the classroom door. She coldly swept her gaze across the crowd, releasing her spiritual pressure as if warning them.
The crowd trembled in fear, not daring to utter a word.
Only Zhao Yunkai managed to force a faint smile, stepping forward to bow respectfully to Gu Ruohan. “Senior Sister Gu.”
Gu Ruohan responded with a curt acknowledgment, signaling An Ran to follow her before turning and leaving.
Oh dear, how long has Eldest Senior Sister been here? An Ran scratched her head sheepishly, quickly gathered her belongings, and hurried after Gu Ruohan out of the classroom.
