My Ex-Girlfriend Said She Was A Fairy - Chapter 13
Wen Yuchuan held a bowl of instant noodles filled halfway with hot water. It hadn’t cooled down yet and was still steaming.
Ji Qingyi looked at the troubled person before her and felt she might indeed be asking too much. So, she graciously gave the other a few more minutes.
…
Was this some kind of timed hot water drinking contest? Leaving aside whether such a competition even existed, why would Wen Yuchuan participate in it? She set the bowl back on the table and smiled, saying she’d wait for the water to cool a bit more before drinking. Ji Qingyi watched as the other deliberately dragged out her time to stay but couldn’t find a reason to kick her out immediately.
“Is there anything else you need?”
After waiting a few more minutes, Ji Qingyi couldn’t help but ask.
“Can’t we just chat if there’s nothing else?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Are you really that free?”
“I do have nothing to do lately.”
“Then go work… Didn’t you say you couldn’t even afford delivery fees?”
Ji Qingyi finally found a weak spot to poke at, deliberately drawing out her words with a strange lilt.
“Hmm… I’m not exactly well-off, but I can manage for a while. Haven’t found a job yet.”
Wen Yuchuan didn’t mind Ji Qingyi’s odd tone and simply smiled as she explained her current situation.
“Eh? What about your previous job…?”
Ji Qingyi had been feeling smug, expecting to see an uncomfortable expression on the other’s face. Instead, she was caught off guard by the answer. She had assumed Wen Yuchuan was just joking about being broke, but it turned out she was genuinely unemployed. So, what now? Was she just idling around?
“I broke my leg while shooting in the rainforest before. After that, I didn’t really feel like taking risks anymore.”
Wen Yuchuan glanced out the window as if reminiscing before suddenly offering an explanation.
“Ah, was it serious?”
Ji Qingyi blurted out.
“Took a few weeks to recover, but I’m fine now.”
Wen Yuchuan looked at the faint concern on the other’s face and couldn’t help but want to laugh, though she suppressed the urge.
“I see…”
Ji Qingyi didn’t know what to say. She remembered Wen Yuchuan once saying that her greatest joy was traveling to different places to capture unique landscapes—the more treacherous, the more thrilling. Now, because of an injury, she had given that up… Did it hurt her? Ji Qingyi didn’t want to rub salt in the wound, so she dropped the sarcasm from earlier.
“It hurt a lot back then.”
Wen Yuchuan leaned closer to Ji Qingyi, slightly bending over her. Ji Qingyi felt her vision darken and looked up to meet Wen Yuchuan’s eyes. The other woman gazed at her pitifully.
“Eh…”
“When I fell, this part got pierced.”
Wen Yuchuan pointed to her leg, lowering her eyes and putting on a pitiful act again.
“Then you should still be careful now.”
Hearing this, Ji Qingyi softened a little, imagining the scene of the injury. She wasn’t good at comforting people, but her voice grew gentler, no longer as cold.
Seeing the concern on the other’s face, Wen Yuchuan couldn’t hold back her smile, satisfied. And, as always, she pushed her luck.
“I’m fine now. Even if I wanted to do something more intense, it wouldn’t be a problem.”
Wen Yuchuan’s usual style was to push boundaries—the moment the other’s tone softened, she’d start flirting again.
“That’s good… Huh?”
“What’s wrong? Want to join me?”
“Join… what?”
Ji Qingyi’s tone turned icy again. Although the other party hadn’t explicitly stated it, she strongly suspected the underlying intention behind those words.
As expected, no good comes from being nice to this person, Ji Qingyi thought.
“I mean… let’s find time to go hiking together. We talked about it before but never got around to it.”
The subject changed too abruptly. Ji Qingyi didn’t react immediately, and it took her a moment to recall what Wen Yuchuan was referring to.
They had indeed mentioned hiking together before. It wasn’t some solemn promise—just a passing whim Ji Qingyi had one day after seeing a video of misty mountains. She’d blurted out that she wanted to go hiking, and Wen Yuchuan had immediately agreed, saying they’d go when both had time.
But Wen Yuchuan soon became busy, frequently traveling to other regions for shoots. Ji Qingyi only had weekends free, and their schedules rarely aligned. Going too far seemed exhausting, so the idea was quietly shelved.
Later, Wen Yuchuan even moved to another city, and the two hadn’t seen each other since. The promise had faded from Ji Qingyi’s memory—until now, when Wen Yuchuan unexpectedly brought it up again. She was surprised.
This was a promise from when they were dating. But they had already broken up—what meaning did such a promise hold now?
Ji Qingyi stared at her without responding.
If Wen Yuchuan had rambled on earlier, deliberately mentioning her injury just to make Ji Qingyi feel guilty and then segue into the hiking topic… then Ji Qingyi really wanted to kick her out the door right now.
“It’s almost noon.”
Ji Qingyi glanced at her phone—it was barely past ten, but she said it anyway. Such an obvious hint to leave should be easy to understand, right?
“Hmm, is it?”
Wen Yuchuan also checked her phone, acknowledging the remark but showing no intention of leaving. She ignored Ji Qingyi’s not-so-subtle cue, leaving Ji Qingyi exasperated as she watched her feign obliviousness.
“Finish your water. You should go.”
Ji Qingyi tapped the table impatiently.
“Mm.”
Wen Yuchuan hummed in response, picking up the bowl to take a sip.
Ji Qingyi thought she was finally complying and sighed in relief. She was already preparing to retreat to her bed, ready to bolt into her room the moment Wen Yuchuan left.
But then Wen Yuchuan suddenly spoke again.
“It’s almost noon—time to cook, right?”
“…Yeah.”
Ji Qingyi had no idea what Wen Yuchuan was getting at now, but whatever it was, she’d just refuse. That was her plan.
“You can’t cook, can you?”
“I can order takeout.”
“Eating takeout while sick?”
“So what?”
“Wouldn’t it be better to eat with me?”
“I’d rather cook for myself.”
“Do you even have ingredients? Let me check the fridge.”
Wen Yuchuan started heading toward the kitchen.
“……”
Of course she didn’t. But what did that have to do with Wen Yuchuan? Ji Qingyi wanted to yell, but that wasn’t her style. So she just stood there silently for a moment.
“Were you going to say it’s none of my business?”
After two steps, Wen Yuchuan turned back, smiling at Ji Qingyi.
“Is it?”
Ji Qingyi had already swallowed her words, but now that Wen Yuchuan had circled back to provoke her, she couldn’t hold back anymore and fired back.
“Right now, we really don’t have any connection.”
Wen Yuchuan pondered for a moment before replying.
“And we never will.”
Ji Qingyi glared at her.
Wen Yuchuan couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
“But what I’m talking about now isn’t our relationship. I just want to make sure you take your medicine properly, and of course, you should eat well before taking it.”
“…”
What did that mean… What did she mean by “not our relationship”? Ji Qingyi was momentarily speechless. She realized she had indeed jumped to conclusions, directly linking the matter of eating to their relationship.
…
Blurting it out like that made it seem like she cared a lot about it. How awful—it felt like the other person had just lightly tapped her, and she’d already unleashed all her big moves.
“I’m going downstairs to buy groceries. You should head back too.”
After a moment of silence, Ji Qingyi stiffly changed the subject, though the underlying message remained the same—she was still trying to shoo the other person out.
“I’ll go with you.”
Wen Yuchuan smiled nonchalantly and followed her out the door.
Ji Qingyi felt nothing but exasperation at this unshakable presence. But since Wen Yuchuan claimed she also needed to buy groceries and followed Ji Qingyi downstairs, and since the building wasn’t her private property, she couldn’t exactly stop the other woman from entering the elevator.
__
On their way back after buying groceries, Ji Qingyi thought she could finally shake off the other’s persistence. But Wen Yuchuan’s audacity exceeded her expectations. As she fumbled with her keys to unlock the door, the woman didn’t return to her own apartment next door—instead, she trailed behind Ji Qingyi again.
“You should go home.”
Unable to hold back, Ji Qingyi turned to face Wen Yuchuan.
“I need to make sure you take your medicine on time.”
“I don’t need you to supervise me.”
“But this morning, it was only because I reminded you that you remembered.”
“… I remember now.”
With no room for rebuttal, Ji Qingyi could only mutter sullenly.
“You’re not feeling well. Cooking would be too exhausting.”
“… So?”
Ji Qingyi waited for the other’s next words, curious to hear what excuse she’d come up with this time to enter her apartment.
“So, I’ll cook for you.”
“Why are you so eager to be free labor?”
Ji Qingyi said helplessly.
“Lately, I’ve been trying hard to earn the title of ‘Good Samaritan.’ I heard there’s a cash reward.”
“…”
Ji Qingyi glared at her again for the nonsense.
“It’s not like you’re losing anything.”
Unfazed by the glare, Wen Yuchuan remained blissfully unaware of how annoying she was being, persistently closing the distance between them.
Just like now—she leaned in again, eyes crinkling and lips curving upward. That unrestrained, radiant smile was exactly the same as the one in Ji Qingyi’s memories. But to the present Ji Qingyi, the other woman only looked like she was asking for a beating.
Not losing anything… Ji Qingyi stared blankly at the approaching smiling face, mulling over the words.
It really didn’t seem like a loss. After all, she’d already spent a night at Wen Yuchuan’s place. Ji Qingyi wasn’t afraid of sharing a space with her again—she just didn’t want to see Wen Yuchuan, which was why she kept trying to push her out. But if Wen Yuchuan was offering to cook for her… Ji Qingyi licked her lips. The woman’s cooking skills were indeed impressive. A free meal…
“Well… fine.”
Ji Qingyi pretended to reluctantly agree, though she couldn’t help but find herself amusing afterward.
Putting on a dissatisfied act when someone was offering to cook for her—Ji Qingyi knew she was overdoing it. But since it was the other’s idea and not something she’d forced, and if anything, it was Wen Yuchuan who was imposing, she didn’t dwell on it further.
Wen Yuchuan seemed to genuinely see herself as a concerned citizen. Apart from Ji Qingyi’s physical health, she didn’t care about anything else—attitude included.
Wen Yuchuan followed Ji Qingyi inside, moving as naturally as if she owned the place, and headed straight to the kitchen to start cooking.
Ji Qingyi watched her bustling figure and found it oddly unsettling. She considered whether she should lend a hand—after all, this was her rented apartment. But when she mentioned it to Wen Yuchuan, the other woman simply told her to sit tight, so Ji Qingyi happily resigned herself to reaping the benefits without lifting a finger.
There wasn’t even a cushion in the living room to sit on, and Ji Qingyi didn’t feel like perching on the cold chairs, so she retreated to her room instead. Though she wasn’t tired, she immediately curled up in bed—the warm embrace of her blankets was heaven, one of the few comforts in her life.
After arguing all morning, she had even forgotten about her headache. But now, in the quiet, the dizziness crept back in. Ji Qingyi buried her head under the covers, trying to dull her senses with a lack of oxygen to chase away the discomfort in her skull.
Before she could succeed, however, she heard a knock at the door.
“Ji Qingyi.”
Wen Yuchuan’s voice called to her from the other side, but she couldn’t be bothered to get up, so she simply told her to come in.
“You just left me all alone out there?”
Wen Yuchuan crouched down beside the bed, and as soon as Ji Qingyi emerged from the blankets, she was met with a pair of eyes feigning innocence.
