- My Ex Who Dumped Me Comes to Hook Me Up Every Day
- Chapter 11 - Jin Zhou, you have to save her.
Jin Zhou patted the shoulder of a woman standing in front of her.
“Excuse me, would you mind telling me what’s happening?”
The woman replied casually, “I’m not sure myself, but I heard someone in the inpatient ward was attacking people with a knife.”
Upon hearing this, Chong Daqiang’s expression shifted subtly.
Jin Zhou belatedly sensed something was amiss, her brow furrowing slightly. “When did this happen?”
The woman glanced back at her, thinking for a moment. “I’m not entirely sure, but it seems like just a few minutes ago.”
Jin Zhou pressed further, “Was the victim female?”
“I wouldn’t know about that. You’d have to ask someone else.”
“…Alright, thank you.”
After the woman turned and left, Jin Zhou turned to Chong Daqiang, her tone serious. “Did you say something to Liu Zhi?”
Chong Daqiang immediately denied it loudly, “No!”
His vehement denial only deepened Jin Zhou’s suspicions.
She paused, then cautiously ventured, “Did you call Liu Zhi here?”
Chong Daqiang retreated two steps, his gaze darting away as he instinctively touched the stubble above his lip.
His demeanor and actions spoke volumes, far more than any words could have conveyed. Though he remained silent, the answer had already surfaced.
Liu Zhi had come to the hospital.
His target was Chong Sheng, still bedridden and utterly defenseless.
This was far from good news.
A chill ran through Jin Zhou’s heart. She took a deep breath, preparing to rush back to the ward immediately.
But Chong Daqiang suddenly spoke up, “Wait, you can’t leave.”
Jin Zhou didn’t respond.
Chong Daqiang grabbed her wrist, his voice tinged with annoyance. “Didn’t you hear me? I said don’t go.”
Jin Zhou glared at him coldly. “What do you want?”
When Jin Zhou turned serious, her eyes radiated an imposing, self-assured authority.
Chong Daqiang’s tone instinctively softened.
“Nothing, just… the couple just reunited. They probably want some time alone. What’s the rush?”
The crude phrasing was vulgar, but the meaning was clear enough.
To salvage a broken marriage, forcing the issue was indeed the simplest and most direct method.
But this was, of course, merely Chong Daqiang’s imagined simplicity.
Even within marriage, women possess full sexual autonomy. If Liu Zhizhen were to force himself on Chong Sheng against her will, he could be charged with rape.
Moreover, Chong Sheng had already decided to divorce him and pursue legal action against Liu Zhi. The two were now destined to be enemies, not former spouses.
If Liu Zhi had truly followed Chong Daqiang’s advice and committed such an act, it was entirely conceivable that the situation could have escalated to the point of Liu Zhi attacking Chong Sheng with a knife.
Jin Zhou pressed her lips into a thin line, her gaze shifting between Chong Daqiang and Liao Jinglian without a word.
The initial shock had subsided, leaving behind an indescribable sense of absurdity.
This case was relatively straightforward. The divorce proceedings were planned to be swift, and Liu Zhi would face appropriate punishment.
Yet now, because of these two foolish and malicious individuals, such a drastic turn of events had occurred. If Chong Sheng had truly been…
Jin Zhou clenched her fists.
“You’ve heard the news: someone in the hospital ward attacked another person with a knife. Aren’t you worried that the attacker might be Liu Zhi and the victim your daughter?”
Liao Jinglian muttered softly, “Impossible. Liu Zhi knows his limits. If they were just talking calmly, how could he suddenly pull out a knife and attack her?”
Jin Zhou ruthlessly shattered her self-deception. “For someone prone to violence, harm is either a single act or countless repetitions.”
Liao Jinglian was silenced, her face falling as she stopped speaking.
Chong Daqiang, however, remained dismissive. “If Miss Sheng would just speak properly, my son-in-law wouldn’t resort to violence. But if she continues to act stubbornly, a little discipline is warranted.”
Seeing them as unyielding as uncarved stones, impervious to reason, Jin Zhou lowered her gaze. When she spoke again, her voice carried an unmistakable air of authority.
“Chong Daqiang, do you realize that intentional assault is a serious crime, punishable by life imprisonment or even the death penalty? If you’ve instructed or shielded a criminal suspect, you won’t escape accountability either.”
Liao Jinglian bristled at this. “Daqiang did nothing wrong! He only wanted to reconcile the couple, so he persuaded Liu Zhi to come see Miss Sheng. Ultimately, we’re just trying to ensure her happiness, aren’t we?”
The mere mention of the death penalty instinctively made Chong Daqiang uneasy, but he forced himself to remain calm. “All this talk of violence is overblown. It’s not a big deal. Liu Zhi just needs to apologize and lower his head, and we can put this behind us.”
Jin Zhou’s gaze gradually hardened. She repeated, “So you’re just going to let this go?”
Having spent years immersed in the law, Jin Zhou’s low voice carried an inherent sense of oppression.
Chong Daqiang swallowed hard. “What else can we do? Couples bickering is normal. We can’t just get divorced over this.”
His words were hardly those of a responsible father, or even a decent human being.
Jin Zhou lowered her eyes.
As Chong Sheng’s parents, Chong Daqiang and Liao Jinglian had turned a blind eye to their daughter’s suffering, focused solely on maintaining their already shattered marriage.
Jin Zhou couldn’t fathom what kind of environment had instilled their deep-rooted patriarchal beliefs and their twisted, traditional views on marriage and relationships.
But after careful consideration, one thing was clear:
Their actions were driven by a desire to save face and protect their finances, with no regard for Chong Sheng’s happiness.
Seeing Jin Zhou’s silence, Chong Daqiang mustered his courage and declared, “I only did what I did. I didn’t kill anyone or break any laws. Don’t try to intimidate me.”
Jin Zhou gave them a deep, lingering look, said nothing more, and turned to leave.
As Jin Zhou hurried toward the ward, she overheard the latest news from two nurses whispering by the roadside.
“Did you hear? The attacker is still on the scene. Apparently, he injured a patient and then took a doctor hostage.”
Jin Zhou stopped in her tracks, her gaze fixed on the two nurses.
Nurse A looked terrified. “Ah… that’s so scary! Is the doctor okay? How badly was the patient injured?”
Nurse B shivered, hugging her arms. “I don’t know. The police haven’t arrived yet, so I didn’t dare go near.”
Nurse A nudged her gently with her elbow. “Do you know who was involved?”
Nurse B nodded. “According to firsthand information from my friend in general surgery, the doctor who was taken hostage is…”
Though the nurses had deliberately lowered their voices, Jin Zhou could still read their lips.
Director Jiang.
Jin Zhou froze.
Director Jiang…
Jiang Yuhuai?
An inexplicable panic seized Jin Zhou, causing her to lose her composure. Her first instinct was to dismiss the possibility.
No, it couldn’t be Jiang Yuhuai.
She took a deep breath, trying to remain calm.
But the more she calmed down and regained her ability to think clearly, the more only one possibility remained in her mind.
If something had happened to Chong Sheng, the doctor most likely to incur Liu Zhiqian’s wrath would be Jiang Yuhuai, Chong Sheng’s attending physician.
Moreover—Director Jiang? How many Director Jiangs could there be in the same hospital?
She had prepared herself to treat Jiang Yuhuai as an ordinary person, no longer letting her actions affect her emotions.
Yet when she realized Jiang Yuhuai might be in danger, Jin Zhou’s heart still trembled violently.
She quickened her pace, hoping to reach the ward as quickly as possible and confirm that this was just a false alarm.
Standing in the center of the first-floor elevator lobby, Jin Zhou watched the numbers above the elevators flicker, ignoring the bustling crowd around her.
Today, the elevators seemed unusually slow. The three elevators serving the upper floors of the inpatient building stopped at each floor, the nearest one still on the tenth floor.
Time ticked by, second by second.
Jin Zhou raised her wrist, silencing all surrounding sounds except for the ticking of her watch and the heavy rhythm of her own breathing.
She cursed inwardly and turned toward the Emergency Passage.
The Twelfth Floor wasn’t low, and even with her regular exercise routine, Jin Zhou’s all-out sprint had pushed her body to its absolute limit.
Without pausing to catch her breath, she shoved open the Fire Door the moment she reached the Twelfth Floor and burst into the corridor.
The hallway was a chaotic scene.
A crowd had gathered, completely blocking access to the central patient room.
A uniformed security guard was shouting loudly: “Drop the knife!”
A man’s hoarse voice roared back: “Don’t come any closer! Stay back!”
Emergency Department staff rushed past, pushing a gurney.
“Hurry! The patient has lost too much bl00d and is already showing signs of unconsciousness.”
The situation was critical. Most bystanders had already retreated, leaving only medical personnel clustered around the edges.
Even they were subconsciously backing away, wary of the bloodstained knife.
Squeezed in the crowd, the metallic taste of bl00d in Jin Zhou’s throat grew stronger. She clenched her teeth.
“Excuse me!”
“Please let me through!”
“Ouch! You stepped on my foot! Why are you pushing so hard?”
“Hey! Who’s that? Are you trying to get killed?”
“Sorry.”
Jin Zhou apologized as she struggled forward.
“Sorry.”
When she finally squeezed her way to the front of the crowd, she saw Jiang Yuhuai standing behind the hospital room door, a knife pressed against her abdomen, her face expressionless.
Jin Zhou’s pupils dilated instantly. Her rationality dissolved into the noisy air with each heavy breath.
She couldn’t quite describe her emotions.
During the darkest nights after their breakup, Jin Zhou had once thought she wanted Jiang Yuhuai to die immediately.
But at this moment,
the cold, gleaming blade was right there, a slight tilt enough to end Jiang Yuhuai’s life.
She’s really going to die.
A chaotic mix of emotions surged within Jin Zhou: impatience, anger, worry, and fear…
Yet there was no joy, no sense of satisfaction.
Her hands trembled slightly, her mind focused on a single thought:
Jin Zhou, you have to save her.
