- Chapter 2 - On the bay window, on the sofa, on the carpet, and...
Jin Zhou had slept soundly the previous night.
After all, in her dream, she had tossed Jiang Yuhuai around repeatedly, finally venting her pent-up frustration.
And—
Jiang Yuhuai’s technique had improved significantly since before.
As far as erotic dreams went, it had been undeniably satisfying.
But today was an important day, and she couldn’t afford to linger on the memory.
Jin Zhou reluctantly opened her eyes.
The snow-white ceiling remained, but the chandelier’s design was unfamiliar, and the bed felt firmer than usual.
This wasn’t her home, nor Su Yun’s.
It wasn’t until she heard the steady rhythm of breathing beside her that Jin Zhou belatedly realized she wasn’t alone.
Drunk hookup?
Such a cliché… No way…
Yet the smooth, naked sensation against her skin forced her to acknowledge that something had definitely happened last night.
Hesitantly, Jin Zhou turned her head.
When she saw the familiar sleeping face beside her, her heart plummeted.
Isn’t this the grown-up Jiang Yuhuai from my dream?
Jin Zhou dressed with unprecedented speed and fled the room.
Splash, splash, splash—
The more violently the water splashed in the bathroom, the more conflicted Jin Zhou’s emotions became.
At first, she had only planned to go home and change clothes, until she noticed the mottled marks on her body.
Even her neck bore a conspicuous purplish-red bruise.
By now, Jin Zhou couldn’t deny the truth: last night hadn’t been a mere erotic dream; it had been a series of very real events.
On the bay window, on the sofa, on the carpet, and…
Even just thinking about it seemed to add a layer of dampness to the rising steam.
Jin Zhou gazed silently at the ceiling.
For the first time, she felt ashamed of her own purely physical reactions.
Ashamed of what?
We’re adults, consenting to each other. There’s nothing to be ashamed of.
But the other person was Jiang Yuhuai.
The Jiang Yuhuai who had stubbornly insisted on breaking up, no matter how she pleaded or begged.
The Jiang Yuhuai who had been with her for money, and who had abandoned her the moment the money ran out.
The Jiang Yuhuai whom Jin Zhou loathed and resented most of all.
Jiang Yuhuai.
Knock, knock, knock—
A knock sounded at the door.
Before Jin Zhou could even say “Come in,” Su Yun had already slipped through the crack in the door, looking as furtive as a ghost.
“I brought you breakfast.”
He placed the bread and milk on the table, his gaze drifting over Jin Zhou with feigned casualness.
Jin Zhou pretended not to notice, replying calmly, “Thank you.”
Unexpectedly, her voice came out with an unusual rasp.
Jin Zhou: …
Su Yun’s expression was clearly veering toward uncontrollable territory.
Jin Zhou quickly explained, “Don’t overthink it. I ran into a friend last night and left early. I forgot to tell you.”
Su Yun had barely slept all night, waiting anxiously outside the office door for Jin Zhou to arrive.
If she hadn’t noticed the faint marks on Jin Zhou’s neck, barely concealed by powder, she might have actually believed her flimsy excuse.
Su Yun forced a smile. “Is that so? What a coincidence. After today’s event, I’ll definitely have to have a proper chat with you. I’m curious to know which ‘friend’ it was—the kind who bites.”
Jin Zhou paused, her hand instinctively rising to cover her neck.
“What is this…?”
Su Yun rolled his eyes at Jin Zhou’s flustered demeanor.
“Alright, I’m heading out to meet the client now. The hospital representatives will be here soon too. Get yourself ready and don’t mess this up for me.”
Jin Zhou understood the importance of this collaboration. She nodded slightly.
“Okay.”
The event consisted of three parts: a tour of the law firm, a discussion of recent overlapping cases, and lunch.
This wasn’t Jin Zhou’s first time organizing such an event.
Though she occasionally encountered difficult personalities among the visiting staff, they paled in comparison to some of her clients.
She was confident she could handle things smoothly.
But Attorney Jin’s confidence shattered completely within just five minutes.
“Hello, I’m Jiang Yuhuai from First Hospital.”
What’s the worst thing that could happen in the world?
Getting drunk, losing control, and ending up in bed with your ex.
What’s even worse?
Getting drunk, losing control, ending up in bed with your ex, and then having to discuss work with them the very next day.
When Jin Zhou saw Jiang Yuhuai standing at the front of the exchange team in formal attire, she almost wondered if she was seeing a ghost.
Jiang Yuhuai’s remark had been hanging in the air for a while. Jin Zhou composed herself, extended her hand, and plastered on a flawless professional smile.
“Hello, I’m Jin Zhou.”
Jin Zhou believed she had already made sufficient concessions and was doing her best to play the role of a polite stranger.
But to her surprise, Jiang Yuhuai refused to reciprocate.
Jiang Yuhuai eyed Jin Zhou’s outstretched hand. “Excuse me, could you sanitize first? There are germs.”
Jin Zhou: What?
Is she implying I’m dirty?
Though an inexplicable anger surged within her, Jin Zhou remembered she was in a law firm, facing elite doctors from C City First Hospital on an exchange program. She swallowed her retort.
A young woman stepped forward to smooth things over. “Dr. Jiang has severe OCD. I’m so sorry, Lawyer Jin. Please don’t take it personally.”
“It’s fine,” Jin Zhou replied with a smile, leaving Jiang Yuhuai hanging. She turned to the young woman and shook her hand instead. “I haven’t had a chance to introduce myself yet. What’s your name?”
The young woman with a neat bob smiled, revealing a sweet dimple. “I’m Meng Jue. You can call me Dr. Meng.”
Jin Zhou nodded. “Alright, let me show you around first.”
Jiang Yuhuai, for once, didn’t stir up trouble and gave a slight nod in acknowledgment.
Jin Zhou observed the group’s formation: Jiang Yuhuai led the way, followed closely by Meng Jue, while the rest of the group trailed behind, looking somewhat disengaged.
She quickly assessed the situation: Jiang Yuhuai was likely the leader, with Meng Jue holding a position of considerable influence.
After the tour, the exchange session began. Jin Zhou had delegated the presentation to Lawyer Wang, a senior member of the institute, allowing her to finally sit down and relax for a moment.
“In recent years, medical disputes have become increasingly frequent, and incidents of harm stemming from litigation disputes are also on the rise…”
The familiar topics droned on, and Jin Zhou’s mind began to wander.
Across the room, Jiang Yuhuai was intently focused on the speaker at the front, taking notes with an air of utmost seriousness.
It was understandable, considering she was the primary organizer of this exchange program.
Su Yun had reviewed all the participants’ profiles, so Jin Zhou wasn’t sure if Jiang Yuhuai had already reached the position of associate chief physician or something higher.
But she had to admit, Jiang Yuhuai seemed to be doing quite well.
At least better than herself.
Jin Zhou lowered her gaze, chuckling at her own audacity for still having the leisure to worry about others.
Lunch was arranged at a hotel near the law firm.
Jin Zhou needed to confirm the menu and timing, so Lawyer Wang led the group inside first.
When she finally entered the private dining room, only one seat remained—right next to Jiang Yuhuai.
Both groups had tacitly placed the two leaders together.
Jin Zhou paused briefly, then casually took the seat beside Jiang Yuhuai.
“Today’s schedule has been demanding, and I’m sure everyone is hungry. I won’t keep you long. Let me simply congratulate everyone on the successful completion of this exchange program. I also hope the law firm and the hospital will have many more opportunities for collaboration in the future!”
Jin Zhou raised her glass, and everyone in the room stood up to toast.
“Well done!”
“Well done—”
The gathering was mostly young people. After a few came up to offer toasts, Jin Zhou returned each with a smile.
The rest were focused on their meals.
Jin Zhou, still recovering from a hangover, felt nauseous and had a headache, leaving her with little appetite. To make matters worse, she was seated next to someone who only made her feel more nauseous.
She took only a few bites to keep up appearances.
No one seemed to notice her lack of appetite.
Or perhaps they noticed but chose not to comment.
After all, to the law firm staff, Jin Zhou was their superior, while to the hospital staff, she was a stranger—neither group had any business interfering.
Except for one person who insisted on stirring trouble.
A pair of chopsticks reached across the table, placing food into Jin Zhou’s bowl.
Accompanying the gesture was a familiar, cool voice.
“Lawyer Jin, aren’t you eating? The banquet is barely halfway through. Isn’t it impolite to stop now?”
If Jin Zhou had harbored any doubts before, she was now almost certain this person was deliberately provoking her.
Refusing to be bullied, she retorted, “Dr. Jiang, don’t you know it’s unhygienic to use your own chopsticks to serve others?”
Jiang Yuhuai calmly set down the chopsticks. “You’re right, using personal chopsticks would be unhygienic. But—these are serving chopsticks. You can rest assured, Lawyer Jin.”
Jin Zhou sneered, “How very thoughtful of you, Dr. Jiang.”
Seemingly oblivious to her sarcasm, Jiang Yuhuai nodded earnestly. “You’re welcome.”
Meng Jue asked with concern, “Lawyer Jin, you look a bit pale. Are you feeling dizzy or nauseous, with no appetite? It might be from overwork. Did you get enough rest last night?”
Meng Jue’s concern might have been genuine, or perhaps it was just professional habit. But then Jiang Yuhuai chimed in, “Lawyer Jin, did you sleep comfortably last night?”
Jin Zhou choked on the hot water she hadn’t swallowed yet.
Jiang Yuhuai quickly added, “I mean, the bed is important too. If you’re not sleeping well, Lawyer Jin, you might consider getting a softer mattress.”
Jin Zhou forced a smile. “No need for your concern, Dr. Jiang.”
In her memories, Jiang Yuhuai rarely spoke with such heavy breaths.
Of course, those memories were from ten years ago, and she couldn’t be sure if they were still relevant.
But she was certain that Jiang Yuhuai was deliberately speaking this way to make her misunderstand and embarrass herself.
Despite her lack of appetite, Jin Zhou was forced to eat a substantial amount under Jiang Yuhuai’s “concern.”
Thankfully, this ordeal didn’t last too long. The meal finally dragged to an end.
After seeing off the hospital staff, Jin Zhou received a call from her client.
She temporarily set aside her tangled emotions and threw herself back into work.
“Attorney Jin! Over here.”
When Jin Zhou arrived at the café, her client looked like she had been waiting for some time.
“Miss Chong, long time no see.”
