- My Ex Who Dumped Me Comes to Hook Me Up Every Day
- Chapter 30 - Do you have time tonight?
Su Yun never got to hear the gossip.
She was called away by a phone call because a client had requested an urgent meeting.
Once the office finally fell silent, Jin Zhou set down the documents she had been holding.
These were the client’s files—a new case that had come in a few days ago, involving an economic dispute.
It wasn’t particularly complex, but she found herself unable to focus on it at the moment.
Perhaps it was because Su Yun had mentioned Jiang Yuhuai’s name.
Jin Zhou recalled the notification she had seen on her VX interface that morning:
You have received a new friend request.
From: Jiang Yuhuai
Jiang Yuhuai’s personal account remained on her blacklist, so this was likely a professional account.
Naturally, Jin Zhou had rejected the friend request.
Yet, at this moment, her thoughts were inexplicably drawn back to that small red dot, disrupting her composure.
Why would Jiang Yuhuai want to add me?
Her knuckles tapped rhythmically against the desk, but no answer came.
Jin Zhou briefly let her mind wander, staring blankly into space.
Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed the case judgment from a few days ago.
If everything went as planned, Yu Sheng should be discharged from the hospital today.
Offering timely concern to clients was a fundamental skill for any seasoned lawyer.
Jin Zhou dialed the client’s number.
Beep…
The waiting tone didn’t last long.
But the female voice that answered wasn’t Yu Sheng’s.
“We’re sorry, the number you dialed is no longer in service.”
Jin Zhou was taken aback.
Just a few days ago, she had contacted Chong Sheng through this very number.
But today, it was a disconnected line.
Opening VX, she found Chong Sheng’s contact in her list had been replaced by a string of random numbers.
“User has deactivated their account.”
Jin Zhou frowned.
Has something happened?
Her fingers scrolled through her contacts, finally stopping on the friend request from earlier that morning.
Jiang Yuhuai was Yu Sheng’s attending physician. Perhaps she would know what had happened.
Jin Zhou lowered her gaze and tapped the “Accept” button.
“You’ve added ‘Jiang’. You can now start chatting.”
After a moment, the “typing…” indicator began to flicker in the chat window.
Jin Zhou waited quietly, expecting the usual formal introduction:
Hello, I’m Jiang Yuhuai.
Or something similar.
But what came next was nothing like she had imagined.
After a few seconds, the “typing…” indicator disappeared.
Instead, the other party sent an adorable cat emoji:
Little cat stretching
Meow
According to the hospital’s schedule, Jiang Yuhuai should still be on duty.
The image of this serious, professional doctor sneaking two cat emojis while wearing her white coat created a jarring contrast.
Jin Zhou: “Don’t you have clinic hours today, Dr. Jiang?”
Jiang Yuhuai: “I’m on duty in the Inpatient Department today.”
Jin Zhou: “Oh.”
Jiang Yuhuai: Typing…
Jin Zhou: “Is it a good time to talk on the phone?”
Jiang Yuhuai: “Yes.”
Jin Zhou initiated a voice call.
Jiang Yuhuai’s hushed voice came through the line.
“Zhouzhou?”
Jin Zhou cut straight to the chase: “Has Chong Sheng been discharged?”
“Yes, she has.”
“When was that?”
Jiang Yuhuai paused to think. “Probably the day before yesterday.”
Sooner than expected.
Jin Zhou pressed further: “Do you have her contact information?”
Jiang Yuhuai replied, “No, I don’t.”
Jin Zhou’s brow furrowed slightly.
The situation was unfolding in an unexpected direction.
Noticing her silence, Jiang Yuhuai asked, “What’s wrong?”
Jin Zhou answered truthfully: “Chong Sheng’s phone number has been disconnected. I’m worried something might have happened to her. Have you been keeping an eye on her?”
Jiang Yuhuai hesitated for a moment. “Chong Sheng’s physical condition has improved significantly. However, in the days leading up to her discharge, her mental state deteriorated somewhat. We advised her to transfer to another department for continued observation, but she refused.”
Jin Zhou blurted out, “Why?”
A deterioration in her mental state?
Could it be because of Liu Zhi?
No, Liu Zhi had already been punished appropriately and had no opportunity to provoke Chong Sheng.
What could be the reason?
Before she could answer, footsteps echoed through the receiver, followed by an unfamiliar voice.
“Dr. Jiang, the patient in bed five is calling for you.”
“Alright.”
Jiang Yuhuai paused. “Do you have time tonight? Let’s meet and talk.”
They agreed to meet at a restaurant.
By the time Jiang Yuhuai arrived, dusk had already fallen.
“Sorry for the wait. Something came up at work and delayed me.”
After a full twenty-four hours of relentless shifts, her exhaustion was evident on her face. Jin Zhou began to believe that her profession had indeed contributed significantly to her recent weight loss.
Jiang Yuhuai pushed the menu across the table. “Let’s order first.”
Without hesitation, Jiang Yuhuai took the menu, marked a few items decisively, and handed it back.
“Zhouzhou, is there anything else you’d like?”
Jin Zhou glanced at the menu: Mapo tofu, Sichuan boiled pork slices…
These were the dishes she had loved six years ago.
Even after returning from abroad, Jin Zhou’s tastes hadn’t become Westernized; her favorite dishes remained unchanged.
Jiang Yuhuai’s expression remained neutral, making it impossible to tell whether this was a habitual gesture or a deliberate choice.
Without comment, Jin Zhou handed the menu to the waiter.
Wasting no time, Jiang Yuhuai immediately addressed the question Jin Zhou was most concerned about.
“Chong Sheng’s condition deteriorating was unexpected. I only have a preliminary guess, and it might not be accurate.”
Jin Zhou nodded slightly. “I understand. Just tell me what you think.”
Jiang Yuhuai continued, “Do you remember Chong Sheng’s parents?”
Jin Zhou’s mind flashed back. “Yes, I remember them.”
Jiang Yuhuai stated a conclusion first: “Her parents treat her very poorly.”
Jin Zhou was already aware of this. After all, during their confrontation with Liu Zhi, Chong Daqiang and Liao Lianjin had barely concealed their disdain for their daughter.
She asked, “What have they done now?”
Jiang Yuhuai replied, “They’re demanding money from Chong Sheng.”
Jin Zhou paused. “How much?”
Jiang Yuhuai calmly stated a figure.
“Three million.”
Jin Zhou was somewhat surprised. After all, three million wasn’t a small sum.
“What do they need that money for?”
Jiang Yuhuai rolled up her sleeves and lowered her gaze. “Chong Sheng has a younger brother, did you know?”
Jin Zhou shook her head. “I’ve never heard of him.”
After a moment’s thought, she guessed, “What does her brother need so much money for? To buy a house?”
Jiang Yuhuai nodded. “Yes, he’s getting married and wants to buy an apartment in the city.”
In C City’s urban districts, apartments larger than 100 square meters typically cost around two million yuan, excluding expenses like the bride price.
A total of three million yuan wasn’t an unreasonable sum.
It had to be said, Chong Sheng’s family had certainly made a shrewd calculation.
For years, Chong Sheng had worked as a senior executive at a foreign company, earning a stable income.
Moreover, she had just received her share of the marital assets in her divorce settlement.
She could genuinely afford three million yuan.
But to place the entire burden on a newly divorced daughter while the son reaped the benefits seemed utterly heartless.
“Are they aware of Chong Sheng’s fragile state?”
Jiang Yuhuai nodded. “I’ve mentioned it several times and warned them not to agitate her further, but they don’t seem to care much. Arguments in her hospital room remain frequent even after my warnings.”
At this point, Jin Zhou couldn’t decide whether to condemn Liao Daqiang and his wife for their blatant favoritism toward their son or to conclude that they simply weren’t Chong Sheng’s real parents.
While she was still pondering, Jiang Yuhuai added, “Chong Sheng was originally scheduled to be discharged today. She suddenly requested an early discharge that night.”
Jin Zhou looked up and met Jiang Yuhuai’s gaze, immediately understanding her unspoken meaning.
“So… Chong Sheng is hiding from them?”
If that were the case, it would explain why she canceled her phone number and VX account.
Jiang Yuhuai replied, “I’m not entirely sure, but it’s highly likely.”
With this lead, the rest of the investigation became much simpler.
Just then, the dishes arrived.
Jin Zhou ended the conversation.
“Let’s eat first.”
“Okay.”
Jiang Yuhuai only took a few symbolic bites before stopping.
Jin Zhou knew that Jiang Yuhuai had always preferred a light diet.
The mapo tofu, boiled pork slices in spicy broth, and other dishes on the table were all heavily spiced, none of which Jiang Yuhuai could tolerate.
Yet Jin Zhou deliberately asked, “What’s wrong? Don’t you like the food?”
Jiang Yuhuai didn’t pick up on the sarcasm, her face still bearing a faint smile. “No, I like everything.”
A thoroughly uninteresting response.
Jin Zhou suddenly lost her appetite.
She set down her chopsticks and asked bluntly, “Why did you add me on VX?”
Jiang Yuhuai paused her hand-wiping motion.
“Without VX, it’s hard to stay in touch.”
Jin Zhou glanced up at her, a hint of disdain in her eyes.
“Is there any need for us to stay in touch?”
Jiang Yuhuai’s tone was earnest. “You said we could be ‘friends’.”
“What did you say?” Jin Zhou hadn’t quite processed the words.
Jiang Yuhuai continued, undeterred. “So, tonight, can I come home with you?”
Jin Zhou frowned. “I don’t agree.”
Jiang Yuhuai looked at her. “Yesterday, you said you’d take me home. You haven’t kept your word yet.”
Jin Zhou: ……
“You yourself said that was yesterday. It doesn’t count today.”
“Then, if yesterday is already in the past, can I live with you in the future?”
A bizarre and illogical shift in logic.
Jin Zhou stated flatly, “No.”
Jiang Yuhuai’s eyes remained resolute. “I can pay rent.”
Jin Zhou remained unmoved. “I don’t need your money.”
Jiang Yuhuai took a deep breath. “If you won’t agree, I’ll just wait outside your door every night.”
A flicker of surprise crossed Jin Zhou’s face.
“Jiang Yuhuai, don’t you think you’re being a bit childish?”
Threatening Jin Zhou with her own safety was a desperate move, and Jiang Yuhuai knew it.
But whether it was despicable or malicious, as long as it kept her by Jin Zhou’s side, she didn’t care anymore.
Jiang Yuhuai lowered her gaze. “I’m just a little scared.”
“Scared of what?” Jin Zhou stared coldly at Jiang Yuhuai, waiting to hear what she would say next.
“Over two weeks ago, a patient died despite our best efforts. The family blamed the hospital for gross negligence and secretly retaliated against the doctors. Their methods ranged from leaving dead rats to throwing pig’s bl00d.”
Jiang Yuhuai paused, then continued, “I live alone.”
Jin Zhou narrowed her eyes slightly. “Do you think saying this will make me—”
