- My Ex Who Dumped Me Comes to Hook Me Up Every Day
- Chapter 6 - It couldn't possibly be Jiang Yuhuai, could it?
The nurse murmured to herself, “But… she should have woken up by now. I’ll get Dr. Jiang to take a look.”
Jin Zhou, not hearing her, asked, “Who brought her here? Has the police been notified?”
The nurse recalled, “The hospital ambulance picked her up. I’m not sure who called, but the police were here earlier.”
The police station handling the case was nearby, so Jin Zhou went there first.
“Hello, I’m Chong Sheng’s legal representative. I’m here to inquire about today’s intentional assault case.”
“A lawyer—you?”
The middle-aged officer glanced at Jin Zhou, his gaze tinged with skepticism. Perhaps he found her too young, or perhaps female lawyers were simply too rare. Whatever the reason, his expression clearly conveyed doubt about her credentials.
Jin Zhou maintained her composure. “Here’s the victim’s authorization letter and my identification documents.”
The middle-aged officer raised an eyebrow, took the documents, and examined them thoroughly before nodding. “I’m Zheng Yi, the officer in charge of Ms. Chong Sheng’s case.”
Jin Zhou gave a slight nod. “Thank you for your time, Officer Zheng.”
Zheng Yi turned and casually organized the scattered case files before handing them to her. “Here’s the preliminary incident report and a reconstruction of the crime scene.”
Jin Zhou accepted the documents.
The incident occurred between 6:30 PM and 9:00 PM on March 11th, during the victim’s commute home from work to her rented apartment.
It’s highly likely the victim encountered the suspect and was threatened en route.
However, based on the crime scene investigation, the primary assault likely took place inside the apartment.
After the incident, a neighbor noticed the apartment door was wide open and found Chong Sheng unconscious on the floor. They immediately called emergency services and the police.
No other eyewitnesses have been identified.
The crime scene was located in a newly renovated area with no surveillance cameras.
The victim remains unconscious.
Her husband, Liu Zhi, is currently on a business trip in Q City and unable to return immediately.
The victim’s parents, who lived in a neighboring city, were still on their way.
The case had reached a temporary impasse.
Jin Zhou looked up and asked, “Do you have any preliminary suspects?”
“We’ve examined the crime scene. Since there were no signs of struggle or fighting outside the door, we can only narrow the scope to someone the victim knew.”
At this point, Zheng Yi suddenly brought up the case Jin Zhou had been working on earlier.
“Speaking of which, Lawyer Jin, you’re assisting the victim in filing for divorce, correct?”
Jin Zhou nodded. “Yes, we’re preparing the second-instance appeal materials. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the divorce should be finalized soon.”
Zheng Yi’s eyes lit up slightly.
“Were the couple’s relations harmonious?”
Sensing that Zheng Yi might suspect Liu Zhi’s motive for the crime, Jin Zhou didn’t hold back.
She took some time to briefly outline the relationship between Chong Sheng and Liu Zhi.
Zheng Yi stood up and paced around the office.
“You’re saying—Liu Zhi has been frequently harassing the woman recently?”
Tracking turned into harassment, victim turned into woman.
Jin Zhou frowned.
“We can’t confirm that yet, but Chong Sheng saw Liu Zhi’s face. It’s highly likely he knows her temporary address.”
Zheng Yi picked up the evidence materials detailing Liu Zhi’s transfer of assets and marital infidelity, seeming to breathe a sigh of relief.
“I’ll personally confirm if he’s her husband. If it’s a domestic matter, it’ll be much easier to handle.”
Jin Zhou naturally noticed the officer’s sudden relaxation.
In a single sentence, the case had seemingly transformed from a serious assault into a petty marital dispute.
It was clear that if Liu Zhi were confirmed as the suspect, the case would likely be classified as domestic violence.
Jin Zhou neatly gathered the documents and handed them back, asking casually, “By the way, Officer Zheng, has the victim’s injury report come back yet? Is it a minor injury?”
Zheng Yi scratched his head. “The injury report? It came back a while ago. It’s not even a minor injury—just a slight injury.”
When Jin Zhou left the police station, her usually sharp aura was unusually subdued.
The difference between “slight injury” and “minor injury” might seem like just a single word.
But that single word determined whether the incident would be classified as a civil dispute or a criminal case.
Minor injury is the threshold for criminal charges of intentional assault. Injuries classified as “slight” fall below this threshold and result only in administrative penalties.
This typically means detention for five to ten days and a fine ranging from 200 to 500 yuan.
If the victim and perpetrator are considered spouses, the punishment could be further reduced.
Chong Sheng lay unconscious in her hospital bed, while Liu Zhi faced only this mild, inconsequential penalty.
The irony was palpable.
Jin Zhou took a deep breath.
She understood that the issue wasn’t with the classification system for minor and slight injuries itself. Rather, someone had deliberately exploited loopholes in the law by understanding the legal thresholds in advance.
At this point, their only hope lay in obtaining valuable evidence from Chong Sheng’s testimony.
As Jin Zhou stepped out of the elevator, she heard a commotion echoing down the corridor.
“What did you do to my daughter? Did you put some kind of curse on her?”
The speaker was a plainly dressed elderly woman.
“Someone come and judge! A sorceress is harming people!”
An old man with a bamboo basket on his back joined in, his voice hoarse but full of vigor, clearly a farmer who made his living tilling the land.
Jin Zhou paused. Was this… a medical dispute?
The nurse spoke calmly, “Uncle and Auntie, your daughter is injured and has just regained consciousness. She’s still a bit disoriented, but there’s no serious harm. Please keep your voices down and avoid disturbing the other patients.”
The elderly woman blocking the doorway remained defiant.
“Injured? That’s a nice way to put it! It’s clearly that Dr. Jiang who cast a harmful curse. My daughter’s covered in bloodstains, acting like she’s possessed. She’s completely out of it, and won’t respond no matter how I call her.”
The elderly man looked impatient. “Liao Lianjing, stop wasting your breath on these fools. Just tell them to bring that doctor here now!”
Liao Lianjing glared at him. “Chong Daqiang, don’t bully me in front of others. If you’re angry, take it out on them!”
By this point, Jin Zhou had a rough understanding of the situation.
Liao Lianjing and Chong Daqiang were likely Chong Sheng’s parents, whom she had never mentioned.
And that Dr. Jiang…
Jin Zhou’s brow twitched.
Could it really be Jiang Yuhuai?
A nurse, unable to bear the injustice, retorted, “Dr. Jiang is a good person! Curses? You’re both deeply poisoned by feudal superstitions! How dare you slander her in public like this!”
Chong Daqiang spat in the nurse’s face.
“You’re no better than the rest of them! Go fetch that Jiang woman right now, or none of you will get away with this!”
The nurse, unaccustomed to such humiliation, her eyes instantly reddened. She stood frozen, unable to utter a word for a long moment.
Just then, someone pushed through the crowd and stepped in front of the nurse, shielding her.
She handed the nurse a piece of paper and asked softly, “Are you alright?”
The nurse took the paper, sniffled, and shook her head silently before turning and hurrying toward the restroom.
Seeing one of his easily manipulated “servants” gone and the newcomer showing him no respect, Chong Daqiang grew visibly displeased. “Who are you?”
The newcomer turned around and said calmly, “I’m Jiang Yuhuai, the person you’re looking for.”
Before the words had fully registered, Liao Lianjing’s eyes widened, and she exclaimed agitatedly, “So you’re the doctor who harmed my daughter, aren’t you?”
Jiang Yuhuai seemed accustomed to handling such confrontations. Even surrounded by layers of people, she remained composed.
“Your daughter was already injured when she arrived at the hospital. The police have investigated the cause of her injuries. If you’d like to understand—”
The steady, cool female voice abruptly stopped.
An egg struck her clothes squarely.
The shattered shell landed on the floor with a sharp crack.
The pungent, raw yolk clung to her pristine white coat.
“The police are in cahoots with you! Don’t try to fool me—I’ve got my eye on you!” Liao Lianjing shouted breathlessly, her face flushed with anger.
Jiang Yuhuai glanced down at the mess, her expression unchanged. When she spoke again, her tone carried a distinct chill.
“If that’s the case, I’ll have to ask security to escort you out.”
The security guards, who had been waiting nearby, tensed, ready to swarm the pair and restrain them.
Chong Daqiang, a man who never yielded to reason or force, glared fiercely. “My daughter is lying in there! Let’s see who dares try to move me!”
This time, the guards showed no leniency for his age. They seized him by the arms and began dragging him toward the exit.
Seeing her husband dragged away, Liao Lianjing didn’t relent; instead, her fury intensified.
Her gnarled, claw-like fingers clamped onto the young doctor’s arm, her right hand raised high.
“I’ll beat you to death, you demon…”
Jiang Yuhuai frowned, intending to shake off Liao Lianjing’s grip.
But a quick glance around revealed a familiar face in the crowd.
Her movements froze momentarily, and she ultimately chose to stand her ground.
As expected, when Liao Lianjing’s hand was still half a meter from her face, a figure rushed forward without hesitation.
Jin Zhou stepped in front of Jiang Yuhuai, shielding her with her body. She forcefully slapped Liao Lianjing’s hand away, her eyes burning with barely contained fury.
“What do you think you’re doing?”
Caught off guard, Liao Lianjing stumbled backward several steps, nearly losing her balance and falling to the ground.
She wanted to lash out, but the woman before her seemed far more formidable than the frail-looking doctor—not someone to be trifled with.
So she demanded stiffly, “Who are you? What business is it of yours?”
“I’m Chong Sheng’s lawyer.”
Liao Lianjing paused, realizing this woman must be acquainted with her daughter.
But what did this lawyer mean?
She waved her hand dismissively. “I don’t care about lawyers or whatever. If you try to stop me, I’ll beat you too.”
Seeing Liao Lianjing reach for Jiang Yuhuai behind her, Jin Zhou’s gaze turned icy.
She gripped Liao Lianjing’s wrist tightly.
“Still don’t understand what a lawyer means, do you?”
“Assaulting or verbally abusing medical staff, or damaging property, constitutes the crime of ‘creating a disturbance,’ punishable by up to five years in prison.”
“If you lay a hand on her, I’ll call the police immediately.”
“Do you understand now?”
