- Chapter 14 - Sister-in-law, do you miss my brother?
After the matter passed, it was like throwing a stone into a calm lake, creating ripples that eventually faded, and life returned to its usual tranquility.
After getting busy, the two of them hardly saw each other at home. Lin Ruoyan left early and returned late, while Xu Jingyi, after the initial busyness, gradually returned to her usual routine. There were very few things to handle, and she only needed to check in occasionally.
So when Xu Jingyi, wearing a light nightgown, saw Lin Ruoyan coming in, she was actually a bit taken aback. She was lazily half-reclining on the sofa, and the neckline of her nightgown was a bit loose, exposing a bit too much skin.
Lin Ruoyan just glanced and then looked away. After the other person got up and wrapped herself in a towel, she turned her face and asked, “Sister-in-law, still not asleep?”
Awkward words, awkward tone, awkward greeting.
It had been more than ten days since she had seen this person come back so early. The aunt had also finished work and gone home, so she was dressed very lightly. Xu Jingyi didn’t feel embarrassed at all; only after seeing the other person’s reaction did she slowly pull over a blanket and drape it over herself.
Her reaction was very strange. Xu Jingyi noticed her entire change, but couldn’t pinpoint what was odd about it, so she could only suppress this feeling deep down.
“Yeah, the drama I’m following isn’t over yet.”
She raised her hand to brush aside the hair trapped under the blanket, her body elongated, and the long, wavy hair draped behind her in a charming manner. “Want to watch together for a while?”
Lin Ruoyan had already changed her shoes and was standing at the door with her laptop bag, not yet coming in. She was pressed for time; she should go back to her room, wash up, sleep, and rest early. It was rare to get off work early, and she shouldn’t waste her time on watching dramas.
But her body reacted faster than her brain; before she could even verbally refuse, she had already taken two steps towards Xu Jingyi. “What are you watching?”
Xu Jingyi was somewhat surprised that the other person also liked watching dramas. She shifted her body as if making space for her. “It’s a historical drama. The plot and the main actors’ performances are quite good.”
Lin Ruoyan sat down next to her, and the two fell silent again, with only the sound of the television filling the entire living room.
On the coffee table in front of the sofa, there were washed and cut fruits. Xu Jingyi was eating them herself while also inviting Lin Ruoyan to join her.
She had gotten used to living alone abroad, and there was hardly any time for such relaxation. Watching dramas was even less of an activity, so sitting together to watch dramas and eat fruit felt a bit strange.
Lin Ruoyan also awkwardly ate a few pieces.
In Lin Ruoyan’s view, television was dull and tedious, but Xu Jingyi was completely engrossed in it. Apart from feeling a bit awkward at first, she was quickly drawn into the plot.
Even though it was boring, Lin Ruoyan still sat upright on the sofa, her back straight, not like someone relaxing at home to watch a show, but more like a diligent student listening in class.
“Ruoyan, relax a bit.” Xu Jingyi took a while to notice her state, reached out and patted her shoulder, “We’re just watching TV, not in a meeting, no need to be tense.”
With her movement, a pleasant scent of perfume wafted over from that side, faint and very comfortable to smell.
The headache from a day of work eased a bit, and Lin Ruoyan obediently relaxed her body, still feeling quite bored but not wanting to leave.
After enduring until the end of an episode, when the credits appeared on the screen, Xu Jingyi stretched and casually asked during the commercial break, “Is it good?”
Lin Ruoyan didn’t know if it was good or not and wasn’t very interested, but she didn’t say so directly. After some consideration, she said, “You can’t tell if it’s good or not after just one episode, right?”
Typical straight-line thinking response made Xu Jingyi unable to hold back her laughter, “Hahaha, that’s true. Then let’s watch a few more episodes. There’s another one later tonight.”
Lin Ruoyan inexplicably replied with an “mm.”
Xu Jingyi also stopped dwelling on the topic, feeling that Lin Ruoyan seemed less cold than usual today, as if she intended to ease the tension between them. She asked, “Why did you come back so early today?”
“The company has sorted out a lot of things, so I won’t have to work overtime as much in the future.” Lin Ruoyan said. She has mild nearsightedness and didn’t take off her glasses when she got home. Her hair was tied back for convenience, but perhaps because it was evening, a few rebellious strands hung down from behind her ears, giving her a very intellectual look.
Xu Jingyi looked at her a few times and thought she looked quite good, an ice beauty.
“That’s pretty good too. People can’t always be tense; they need to relax sometimes.” Maybe it feels good, Xu Jingyi reclined on the sofa again, her feet lifted, curling up into a ball. “Staying like this for too long can make you sick.”
“Mm.”
Lin Ruoyan wasn’t a talkative person. After her “mm,” she didn’t know what to say next, staring blankly at the TV, but half of her mind was focused on the person beside her.
She didn’t spend much time at home before; most of the time, Xu Jingyi appeared in a mature, sophisticated manner, rarely like she is now.
“Hey, have you eaten?” The TV commercial was a bit long, and Xu Jingyi was waiting with nothing to do. After an ad flashed on the screen, her gaze fell on the fruit on the coffee table, and she suddenly remembered this question.
“I ate, at the company.”
“Yeah… that’s true, it’s already so late.” Xu Jingyi elongated her “mm,” “Your brother used to do the same, always working overtime and coming back very late.”
Lin Ruoyan’s eyelids fluttered, as if she had thought of something. A strange feeling surged in her heart, and despite trying to suppress her thoughts, she couldn’t help but ask, “Sister-in-law, do you miss my brother?”
Oh, oh, oh, someone is jealous (not really)
