My Sister-In-Law Has Impure Intentions (GL) - Chapter 18
Lin Ruoyan didn’t go home that night, and it was late when she finally arrived the next evening. She had hoped to avoid Xu Jingyi, but to her surprise, even though it was almost midnight, Xu Jingyi was still sitting on the sofa.
The living room lights were off. Only after turning them on did Lin Ruoyan see Xu Jingyi. “Sister-in-law.” Her thoughts raced several times, but Lin Ruoyan ultimately greeted her. The air was eerily quiet. She didn’t want to linger, so after greeting her, she turned to go upstairs, but Xu Jingyi called out to stop her.
After Lin Ruoyan sat down on the sofa, a deathly silence filled the air. Both waited for the other to speak. Lin Ruoyan was more patient. Finally, Xu Jingyi broke the silence, her voice deep: “Did you go see that woman?”
“Yes.” She found out pretty quickly, Lin Ruoyan thought.
“What did you ask?” Xu Jingyi looked at her, staring at her expression. Lin Ruoyan kept her head down, making Xu Jingyi feel agitated. “Look at me when you speak.”
Lin Ruoyan raised her eyes to meet Xu Jingyi’s, but saw nothing in them. Her expression was as calm as stagnant water. “And you, sister-in-law? What did you talk about when you went to see that woman?”
The tense atmosphere grew even more oppressive. Xu Jingyi knew she wouldn’t get anything out of Lin Ruoyan. She took a step back and asked, “Why are you still investigating? Hasn’t it all passed?”
This time, Lin Ruoyan didn’t mince words. She said directly, “Heh, it might have passed in your eyes, sister-in-law, but I’ve already said it: my brother’s death was absolutely not an accident. I don’t believe the police’s conclusion.”
As she spoke, anger flared in her eyes, no longer stagnant like before. “To find the true killer, I will definitely investigate, and I will continue to investigate. That woman is just the beginning.”
“You…” Lin Ruoyan’s resolute attitude agitated Xu Jingyi. She wanted to say something but ultimately swallowed her words. “Isn’t it good the way things are now? Why must you pursue the truth?”
Her words were strange, as if she was content with the status quo, or perhaps even desired the current outcome. Or perhaps… this current outcome was her doing.
However, this matter had only just begun to show clues. Until it was thoroughly investigated, nothing could be said for sure. Lin Ruoyan scoffed, “No, it’s not good. I want to know who the real killer of my brother is. What’s wrong with that?”
“And then?” Xu Jingyi suddenly stood up, her chest heaving violently due to her unstable breathing. “You find out, and then what? Will you kill to avenge your brother? Make him go to his brother to be buried with him?”
She looked down at Lin Ruoyan, her hands tightly clenched, her voice loud, almost a quarrel. “And then you’ll die too? Have you considered that if someone truly orchestrated your brother’s death without leaving any evidence, they can just as easily kill you?”
Lin Ruoyan was not intimidated by her. She also stood up, her presence subtly overpowering Xu Jingyi’s. Her voice was not loud, but tightly controlled. “If I find the evidence, the police will investigate it naturally. Why would I kill anyone?”
“Yes, you and my brother were just husband and wife. When disaster strikes, each goes their own way. My brother died, and you get to enjoy the spoils. Naturally, there’s no need for you to pursue it. But I’m different from you. As long as there are doubts, I will uncover the final truth.”
Hearing this, Xu Jingyi raised her hand and slapped Lin Ruoyan. Smack! The sound was crisp. A slap mark quickly bloomed on Lin Ruoyan’s face, but the blow did not silence her. “Brother was with you every day. All your assets were intertwined. Even if you made enemies, you made them together. But only my brother died. You should know the reason for that better than I do.”
Xu Jingyi didn’t hit her this time, nor was she as angry as before. “Anything else? Say it all.”
“You should know everything I’ve found, but you’re not telling me anything. Why is that? Is it really, as you say, because you’re afraid I’ll get involved and something will happen, or is there another reason that you know better than anyone?”
“Since we’ve already gotten this far, I’ll be direct. I’ve grasped the clue, and there’s no way I’ll give up easily.”
Xu Jingyi clasped her hands tightly behind her back. “I advise you not to continue, or the consequences will be unbearable.”
“If that’s your attitude, sister-in-law, then I’d like to know what reason made you accept the ‘accident’ so easily, when you clearly know you have many enemies, and the possibility of an accident is minimal.”
“I’ve said it. Since it has already happened and cannot be undone, accept it. Living your life well afterward is the best option.”
“Heh, can you truly live your life peacefully afterward?”
“Why not?”
Lin Ruoyan’s face grew colder. Her other conjecture took precedence under Xu Jingyi’s attitude, making her own demeanor even icier. The two of them had completely torn off their pretense. “In that case, I have nothing more to say to you.”
She turned and left. They parted on bad terms. The relationship that had only recently begun to mend became even more strained. The harmony of the past few weeks felt like a mirage.
