My Sister-In-Law Has Impure Intentions (GL) - Chapter 24
When they came down, it was peak lunch hour, and many employees were downstairs.
Lin Ruoyan naturally turned to Xu Jingyi and asked, “Sister-in-law, did you used to come to the company often?”
Many people were watching, and Xu Jingyi couldn’t ignore her. She played along. “Yes, you know running the whole group is busy. He was always working overtime, so if I wasn’t busy, I would come over to have lunch with your brother.” She smiled as she said this, her red lips curving, as if recalling old times. “I treated it like a date. He was busy, so I accommodated him more.”
Lin Ruoyan smiled back. “Your relationship with my brother was very good. I’m envious.”
“Don’t be envious of me,” Xu Jingyi sighed. She felt a bit lonely because of Lin Ruofeng’s death, but she didn’t want to bring up those past events in front of Lin Ruoyan. They already had conflicts because of that incident, so she changed the latter half of her sentence just before saying it. “You’ll find your own happiness someday.”
She slightly raised her tone. “If you meet someone you like, or someone suitable, you should give it a try. You’re pretty and capable at work. I’m sure many people are pursuing you, right?”
When Xu Jingyi spoke, she adopted the role of a sister-in-law, unconsciously taking on the tone of an elder. Lin Ruoyan’s expression changed. Her tone was no longer as indifferent as before; it was stiff. “No. Sister-in-law, you don’t need to worry about these things. I don’t have any plans right now.”
Her change in tone was too obvious, and Xu Jingyi noticed it. However, she didn’t stop talking. Remembering what happened that night, she pursed her lips. Lin Ruoyan’s feelings for her were likely a distorted result of her brother’s death. Maybe if she gave her some guidance, it would be fine. It was too big a matter for her to be angry and let things be. She had to address it while it could still be corrected.
“I’m your sister-in-law. With your brother and parents gone, they say the elder sister-in-law is like a mother. It’s only natural that I worry about these things for you.”
Lin Ruoyan said nothing and quickened her pace, quickly putting a two-step distance between them. What’s this about the elder sister-in-law being like a mother? She had heard “the elder sister is like a mother” many times, but this was the first time she heard a sister-in-law wanted to be her mom.
She kept up that pace until they were seated in the restaurant. Xu Jingyi’s shoes had a bit of a high heel, and she didn’t deliberately try to catch up, so she remained a few steps behind. But she still had to finish what she started. Lin Ruoyan’s reaction only validated her guess.
After they sat down and ordered, Xu Jingyi acted as if Lin Ruoyan’s previous display of unhappiness hadn’t happened. “Ruoyan, don’t be unwilling to listen to me. You’re not young anymore. Tell me what kind of person you like, and I can introduce you to someone. I know quite a few talented young men.”
“The Lin Group doesn’t have any major issues right now. You should also consider these things. When I was your age, I was already married to your brother.”
She chattered on endlessly. Lin Ruoyan’s temples throbbed with a dull ache. She patiently listened, but the more Xu Jingyi spoke, the less she could bear it.
“Stop talking,” she said, her voice turning cold again. “That was just acting. There’s no one here now, so you don’t have to pretend.” After saying that, she took out her phone and started scrolling, treating Xu Jingyi like air. The sound from her phone clearly indicated she was watching short videos.
Xu Jingyi: ………………… You don’t have to be so cold.
With things as they were, Xu Jingyi didn’t push it and took out her own phone. But she didn’t use her phone much. She looked at her WeChat, replied to a few messages, and then boredly put it down.
“Ruoyan, what are you watching?” Out of sheer boredom, Xu Jingyi propped her head up with her hand and watched Lin Ruoyan, trying to pass the time.
Lin Ruoyan looked up at her, and her face was right in front of her. Perhaps it was because the occasion was more formal today, but Xu Jingyi was wearing full makeup. Even after looking at her all morning, the sight still made Lin Ruoyan’s heart suddenly race. She frowned at Xu Jingyi, her eyes clearly asking, What do you want? I already said we don’t have to act anymore.
Xu Jingyi understood the implicit meaning and smiled, giving her a look that told her to look to the side.
Lin Ruoyan turned her head and saw that several of the people who had been at the meeting with them had also arrived, and their eyes were glancing her way.
Lin Ruoyan: …………………. A miscalculation. Those old guys came here too.
She had actually wanted to ask Xu Jingyi out for lunch, not for the sake of acting. It was for lunch. But she hadn’t expected Xu Jingyi to turn the conversation to that topic, saying things she absolutely couldn’t accept, which was why she had shut down the conversation. But now, she had no choice but to continue the act. She didn’t have to act in front of the employees, but she had to in front of these shareholders.
She calmly put down her phone. “Nothing, just handling a little business. What were you saying, sister-in-law? Were you talking about going out to play this weekend?”
Xu Jingyi: …………………. I didn’t know you could talk like that? Who was talking about going out this weekend? Were you dreaming?
“Yes, the weather has been nice lately. Let’s find a place to relax together this weekend.”
“Mhm, where do you think would be a good place, sister-in-law?”
“I think…”
