Episode 20: Interrogation 

——While Rindou was hunting monsters through the gate meant for new players, an interrogation of Gakuto was taking place in one of the interrogation rooms at the Player Association. 

“Hey! Why the hell am I in this situation?!” 

“You are suspected of abandoning your mission during the stampede.” 

“Huh? Who’s saying that?! Is it that person, or is it Rindou?!” 

The interrogation was being conducted by multiple people, including one female staff member from the Association who was interrogating. And there was another person, Ayane, who had been in charge at the scene that day. 

“As I mentioned earlier, this is not just his opinion. Also, there is security camera footage. I recommend you testify honestly.” 

“Shut up! I was just trying to protect my own life! What’s wrong with that?!” 

After seeing Gakuto’s defiance, Ayane let out a sigh. 

“Do you even have any sense of responsibility as a player? You’re a C-rank player, right?” 

“So what? Just because I’m C-rank, do I have to protect all the weaklings? Ridiculous—” 

“Being a player means your rank doesn’t matter.” 

Gakuto tried to complain, but Ayane cut him off. She was speaking in a firm tone. 

“As a player, you have a duty to protect people who aren’t players, regardless of your rank.” 

“I don’t care!” 

“Then, we can also consider revoking your player qualification. Is that alright with you?” 

“What did you say?!” 

Ayane was an A-rank player and trusted by the Association to lead operations. If she announced the revocation, Gakuto would no longer be a player. 

“…Tch, damn it! Fine, I ran away!” 

“See? You can admit it.” 

“In that case, I’ll have to issue a demotion for Oze-sama, lowering him to D-rank.” 

“Huh!? But I admitted it!” 

The Association staff member announced the demotion. And Gakuto reacted with anger. 

“I did say your qualification could be revoked if you didn’t admit it. But I never said there wouldn’t be consequences if you did admit it.” 

“You set me up!” 

“Crime comes with punishment. It’s only natural.” 

“Dammit!” 

Thus, Gakuto admitted his guilt and was demoted from C-rank to D-rank. His followers also had their ranks lowered and were banned from activities for a month. 

“Next time something like this happens, you’ll be banned from qualifying for good. So be careful,” 

Ayane said with a smile as Gakuto clicked his tongue and stormed out of the interrogation room. 

“Kazaki-sama, thank you for your hard work.” 

“Thank you.” 

The Association staff member said, and Ayane replied with a smile. 

“Still, a demotion and a month-long activity ban?” 

“Is something wrong?” 

“Ah? No, it’s nothing. I’ll be going now.” 

Although the staff member asked about it, Ayane just gave a wry smile and left quickly without answering. 

(There’s no way I could tell the staff that I’m dissatisfied with the punishment!) 

Ayane thought, while she believed that revoking his qualification or issuing a red card would have been appropriate for the crime. She had wanted to announce a revocation without waiting for his admission. But Gakuto had given in quickly, fearing losing his player status. 

Since it ended like this, she can only follow the rules for the punishment.

“Ugh?!”

“Listen up! You’d better find Rindou! If you don’t, I’ll kill you all!” 

The followers all ran off at once, with one still bent over in pain. The guy slowly got up and stumbled away.

“……Rindou, I swear I’ll kill you! Banned from activities, huh? Ha, who cares! As long as it’s inside the gate, I can do whatever I want!” 

Blinded by rage, Gakuto left the hangout spot and began searching for Rindou. He was exuding murderous intent as he went.
