Episode 40: The Rush

“Wh-what’s going on?” 

“………This might be bad.” 

As he looked around to assess the situation, unlike Rindou, Kyousuke was sweating and sensing danger. 

“What happened?” 

“I don’t know. But this sound……. it’s definitely the signal that monsters are starting to move all at once.” 

“All at once!?” 

Rindou was confused. He was wondering if this was a stampede. But Kyousuke had never encountered a stampede-like situation in the past. And he had no idea either. 

“Normally, we’d be running for our lives… but, well, I guess that’s how it would go in Rindou-kun’s case.” 

At first, Kyousuke was tense. But then he smiled wryly. It was all for the fact that when Rindou heard that the monsters were moving all at once, he quickly took a battle-ready stance. 

“For me, the more monsters there are, the better. More drops, more skill proficiency. And even though the chances are low, I might even get new skills.” 

“That really is a privilege just for you, Rindou-kun.” 

Kyousuke unsheathed his sword and stood beside Rindou. 

“But this time, it’s too abnormal. You might not like it, but let me join the fight too.” 

“I’m not opposed to it at all. Just don’t overdo it, alright? I want to team up with you once you’ve healed from your injuries.” 

Rindou flashed a grin. And Kyousuke was slightly surprised. He returned a similar smile. 

“……You’re right.” 

“Let’s start by taking down the monsters here!” 

“Understood… I see them!” 

As Kyousuke shouted, a swarm of monsters rushed into their view. 

It wasn’t just the Poison Snakes they had recently defeated, but also massive monsters resembling spiders and lizards. 

“Monsters from the swamp often have poison! Even if it’s just a scratch, be careful if you’re attacked!” 

Even the monsters they could see were likely to be poisonous. And many of the unseen ones from the swamp were too. While the poison wasn’t especially strong and its effects weren’t immediate, accumulated damage could render someone immobile at a critical moment. So even small wounds couldn’t be ignored. 

“They’re coming!” 

“I’ll go first! You handle any stragglers!” 

“Leave it to me!” 

Rindou moved forward. He prioritized evasion while aiming for one-hit kills with his Gale Sword. Monsters attacked even if they were injured, so one-hit kills helped him avoid being distracted by unnecessary caution. 

“Behind us, they’re getting through!” 

Despite his evasion, some monsters managed to slip past. If this were a solo mission, it would be dangerous to be surrounded. But this was a party. And his teammates included the former C-rank player Kyousuke. Having him as a companion definitely served as a strong asset. 

“Hah!” 

With a swing of his sword, Kyousuke cleaved the Acid Spider in two. 

“Feel free to let some escape! This is just practice for my comeback!” 

“Haha! In that case, I’ll take it easy too!” 

Although Rindou’s [Gacha] skill wouldn’t activate unless he personally defeated monsters, enough monsters were still coming from deeper within to make up for the ones that slipped past. There was no point in overextending and draining energy; right now, not just Rindou’s, but also Kyousuke’s life was at stake. 

“We need to work together to get through this.” 

“Bring it on for my [Gacha]!” 

Perhaps it was because his skill had evolved into [Intermediate Swordsmanship], but Rindou remained calm. He was adapting his fighting style for each monster, whether it was cutting off heads, stabbing hearts, or cleaving bodies. He kept making instant decisions while ensuring to execute one-hit kills.

“By the way, why are so many monsters suddenly moving at once?” 

Kyousuke was observing Rindou’s movements while dealing with the escaped monsters. And then, he glanced around. There had to be a reason for the monsters moving in such a large group. He knew that once they finished hunting these monsters, the battle would end. But if the root cause wasn’t dealt with, the same situation could happen elsewhere. 

“We need to find the cause somehow. But for now, we need to survive this!” 

As more monsters charged at them, Kyousuke moved to adjust his position. He was watching Rindou. But then, an unexpected encounter occurred. 

“…Ishida-kun?” 

“Heh heh! Yada-senpai, heh heh heh!” 

It was Ishida, Kyousuke’s junior and a staff member from the Association. It was the same person whom they had met before going into the gate for new players.
