Episode 49: Eldias Kong ②

“Come at me, you gorilla bastard!”  

“GRUOOOooooooOOOoooHHhh!!”  

When Rindou stepped forward, Eldias Kong immediately reacted.  

It leaped, tearing the ground beneath it. It spreaded its arms and legs wide as it descended with the sun behind it.  

“What are you, a pro wrestler?!”  

Faced with an attack from an unreachable height, Rindou had no choice but to sprint out of the impact zone. He then pivoted sharply and transitioned into an attack. He drove his Gale Sword into the creature’s exposed back.  

——Clang!  

“Damn it! The blade still can’t cut through!”  

“UOOoooOoHHHhh!”  

“Seriously?!”  

Thinking the back was a blind spot, Rindou was caught off guard as Eldias Kong swung backward with its fist.  

Rindou barely managed to leap away in time. But in midair, he was momentarily defenseless. Predicting this move, Eldias Kong quickly stood up. It was moving with surprising speed for its massive frame. He prepared to jump toward the airborne Rindou.  

“I won’t let you!”  

“UoAHhh?!”  

Kyousuke intervened. He interrupted Eldias Kong’s leap. However, his attack was deflected by the creature’s thick fur.  

“UHOH! UHOHOAA!”  

“Just buying some time helps a lot!”  

Kyousuke retreated beyond the creature’s reach. The Eldias Kong seemed to determine who the real threat was.  

“……GruOOOooooOOOhhhHH!”  

The real danger was Rindou.  

Despite his attacks being repelled by the thick fur, he kept pressing forward. He was searching for a way to defeat it. The Eldias Kong concluded that if it could eliminate Rindou, the others were insignificant.  

(Good, the first phase is complete!)  

Reading the creature’s intentions from its expression, Rindou was internally satisfied. However, bringing it down was still far from certain—this was just the beginning of the real fight.  

(I have to get this dagger into its eye or mouth!)  

Rindou touched the rare item he’d tucked at his waist—the Venom Fang Dagger.  

(If I can poison it from the inside, its movements will slow. Whether we kill it or escape, it’ll create an opening.)  

They had three chances. Ideally, they’d use multiple daggers. But even one successful attempt was critical.  

Kyousuke was also determined to succeed with his role.  

(I need to hit its eye or mouth with the dagger. Rindou-kun is aiming for the same, but I have more opportunities. I can’t fail.)  

The three daggers were divided—Rindou held one, while Kyousuke carried the other two.  

This was part of Rindou’s plan: he would act as the decoy, and Kyousuke was entrusted to ensure at least one hit landed.  

(It’s a tough role, but Rindou-kun is in much greater danger.)  

Watching Rindou battle the creature head-on, Kyousuke focused his full attention. He was waiting for the perfect moment.  

“Haaaaah!”  

Rindou unleashed a sharp slash at the Eldias Kong’s neck. The creature, however, didn’t bother to guard—it let its fur absorb the blow and then closed its arms inward to crush him.  

Rindou ducked low to avoid being grabbed and leapt backward. But the Eldias Kong charged forward. It was unwilling to let him escape.  

“This thing’s trying to finish me off!”  

“UHOH! GRUuuuAAAaaAHH!”  

Unlike their first encounter, the Eldias Kong was now attacking with ferocious desperation. Its behavior puzzled Rindou, who kept dodging and strategizing.  

(Why is it so desperate? What happened to its caution? Is there something making it panic?)  

The only explanation Rindou could think of was a threat so severe it had to leave its territory. Yet, he sensed nothing nearby.  

(Is it sensing something only monsters can perceive?)  

Though he didn’t understand its motives, Rindou appreciated that the creature’s recklessness worked in his favor.  

“I’ll make the most of this opportunity!”  

“GRuUUooOOOOOooHHHhh!!”  

The Eldias Kong raised its right hand high. It was preparing to slam it down on Rindou.  

The palm and fingers were less protected by fur. It presented an opening. Rindou slipped between its fingers to evade the strike. He slashed upward with all his strength using the Gale Sword.  

——Slash!  

“GRUAAAAHHH!”  

The blade slipped into the joint of the Eldias Kong’s little finger. Using the creature’s own force, Rindou severed the fingertip in a devastating blow.  

“So that’s why it kept punching—I couldn’t tell this spot was vulnerable!”  

Eager to end the fight quickly, the Eldias Kong might have thought that if punching wasn’t effective, spreading its hands to increase the attack range would be better. However, this decision led to the worst possible outcome for the creature.  

For the first time, the Eldias Kong experienced pain. And it began thrashing wildly on the spot. It was swinging its arms chaotically. Rindou, seeing the unpredictable attacks, decided to abandon a follow-up strike. He retreated to a safer distance.  

But then, something unexpected happened.  

——Thunk!  

“Huh?”  

“One down!”  

“GYAAAaaHoOOHoOHO!!”  

Kyousuke had thrown the Venom Fang Dagger. And it struck directly into the wound on the Eldias Kong’s severed pinky.
